And the Greenest Town Is… Truro!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eclipsing all other towns with an outstanding score of 70\/100, Truro emerges as the epitome of green living in the UK. The picturesque town scored exceptionally well in categories such as air quality, outdoor green spaces, and public engagement with environmental issues. Notably, Truro also led in the number of per capita Google searches related to climate change and sustainable transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who Else Made the List?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Joining Truro in the top five are Stirling, Salisbury, Perth, and Canterbury, each displaying admirable sustainability practices like low CO2 emissions and effective waste recycling. Other towns and cities rounding out the top 10 include Bath, Chester, Edinburgh, Lichfield, and Aberdeen\u2014all setting commendable examples of commitment to a greener lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Sustainability Struggles: Portsmouth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the flip side, Portsmouth has room for improvement, scoring just 32\/100 on our green index. With only 27% of household waste being recycled and limited availability of private outdoor space due to high population density, the town faces its own set of challenges in becoming a greener place to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Methodology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The percentage of properties with private outdoor space and the average size of these spaces were assessed using data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Emissions were evaluated on a per capita basis using figures from the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory. The percentage of household waste sent for reuse, recycling, or composting for each city was sourced from multiple regional reports: SEPA for Scotland, StatsWales for Wales, LG Inform, and DAERA for Northern Ireland. Air quality metrics, including PM10, PM2.5, and NO2 concentrations, were derived from the WHO Ambient Air Quality Database Version 2023 (v6.0). Finally, Google Search Volumes for the keywords \u2018recycling\u2019, \u2018climate change\u2019 and \u2018electric car\u2019 were taken from Google Ads Planner tool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scores for each category were then normalised on a scale from 0 (worst) to 10 (best). All 10 metrics were given equal weightings within this study, with their final scores being multiplied by 10 to give a final number out of 100. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where data was not available for a specific city, a score was given based on the average of other cities for that specific metric. This ensured that cities with missing data neither benefited nor were disadvantaged from having missing data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
