Our latest property to feature in the fantasy valuation series is another\ngrand abode with a literary connection \u2013 the home of Jane Austen\u2019s feisty\nheroine, Elizabeth Bennett, in one of her most famous novels, Pride and\nPrejudice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1813 novel, the Bennett family home, Longbourn House, was set in the fictional Hertfordshire village of the same name. However, in Andrew Davies\u2019 much loved 1995 BBC television adaptation starring Jennifer Ehle as Lizzie Bennett and an up-and-coming Colin Firth as the aloof Mr Darcy, the location was around one hundred miles to the west in Wiltshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, both the interior and exterior of charming Grade II* Listed\nLuckington Court in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Luckington near\nChippenham stood in for Longbourn in the television series. Made from the distinctive,\nlocal Cotswold stone, the eight-bedroom, seven-bathroom detached manor house dates\nback to the 11th<\/sup> century when \u201cLochintone<\/a>\u201d<\/em> was\nowned by King Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England who was famously\nbeaten by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Made from the distinctive, local Cotswold stone, the eight-bedroom, seven-bathroom detached manor house dates back to the 11th<\/sup> century when \u201cLochintone<\/a>\u201d<\/em> was owned by King Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England who was famously beaten by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More recently, ownership has remained in the family of Lt-Col Trevor Horn, the original director of the icon Badminton Horse Trials, since 1947. Whilst the property went up for sale for the first time in 70 years in 2018 for a cool \u00a39 million, it appeared again on the market for the more modest fee of \u00a36 million in the summer of 2022. Despite being one of Rightmove\u2019s most viewed properties of 2022, as of January 2022<\/a>, Luckington Court remains on the market for a reduced fee of \u00a35 million. A bargain for some perhaps, although it is certainly \u201ca truth universally acknowledged\u201d that this price will still be out of reach for most of us mere mortals! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those with the requisite deep pockets, the purchase of\nLuckington Court also includes the surrounding estate, which provides farming,\nresidential and commercial income opportunities, nearly nineteen acres of grassland,\na croquet lawn, tennis court and formal gardens, not to mention one of the\nwidest recorded trees in the UK, a 400-year-old Lebanese Cedar!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to purchase a more modest country pile, the average\nproperty price in Luckington itself was \u00a3563,750 over the last 12 months, down\n38% since 2021. The wider Chippenham area offers a more affordable proposition,\nwith an average price of \u00a3286,847 in the last year, ranging from \u00a3240,560 for\nterraced homes to an average of \u00a3426,569 for detached properties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For die-hard Austen fans, the likely inspiration for the location of Longbourn and the nearby military town of Meryton is thought to be the Hertfordshire towns and villages of Harpenden, Harpenden Bury and Redbourn, which with an average property price of between \u00a3729,814 \u2013 \u00a3911,582 would offer rather less bang for your buck. <\/p>\n\n\n
