Dunfermline in\nthe eastern county of Fife was known as the capital of Scotland between the 11th<\/sup>\nand 13th<\/sup> centuries and housed many of its most illustrious rulers.\nIn 2022 it has once again curried favour with royalty, receiving city status\nduring the Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours on 20 May 2022 and hosting King\nCharles III for his very first royal engagement on 3 October 2022 to formally\nconfer city status. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what is it that\nEdinburgh\u2019s unassuming neighbour to the north has to offer? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the final\nresting place of a number of important Scots \u2013 including Robert the Bruce no\nless \u2013 Dunfermline has a proud history which dates back to the Neolithic period\nwhich is still evident via the splendid Dunfermline Abbey and Palace<\/a> and the Dunfermline Carnegie Library<\/a> \u2013 the first of its kind in the world\nwhich was donated to the town by a local boy made good, the famous 19th<\/sup>\ncentury industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnagie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today,\nhomeowners are drawn to Fife\u2019s largest urban centre thanks to this strong\nheritage, attractive medieval, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, plentiful\nretail amenities, charming parks and gardens and employment options via big hitters\nsuch as Sky, Amazon and Nationwide to name but a few. House prices are also not\nto be sniffed at!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, the\ntown had an average property price of \u00a3188,907<\/a> over the last 12 months. This is slightly\ncheaper than Fife overall and offers a significant saving in comparison to\npricey Edinburgh and St Andrew\u2019s at \u00a3323,228 and \u00a3524,705 respectively, both of\nwhich are within a comfortable commute from Dunfermline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importantly,\nthere are also plenty of new homes coming onto the market in this fast-growing\ncity, such as the popular Carnegie Fauld and Lapwing Brae developments. Fans of\nperiod properties can find some stunning Victorian and Edwardian examples near\nthe city centre and the Headwell and Bellyeoman areas to the north and St\nLeonards to the south are also popular with homebuyers, as is the suburb of Duloch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport\nlinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dunfermline\u2019s\nresidents have some great transport options at their disposal. Particularly\nsince the introduction of the Queensferry Crossing at the Firth of Forth in 2017.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drivers have\nthe benefit of the M90 between Edinburgh and Perth, the A907 for westbound\nconnections to Stirling, Falkirk, Glasgow and beyond and the A92 for\nconnections to Kirkcaldy, Fife, St Andrew\u2019s and the rest of the east coast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two\ntrain stations in the town, Dunfermline City<\/a> (formerly Dunfermline Town) which is\nlocated just south of the town centre and Dunfermline Queen Margaret<\/a>, located near the Queen Margaret\nHospital. Both stations are on the Fife Circle Line with services to Edinburgh\nWaverley taking less than 40 minutes and regular connections to Cowdenbeath and\nGlenrothes. There is also the option to pick up northbound connections to\nDundee and Aberdeen from nearby Inverkeithing station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a\nnumber of local bus services<\/a> available too, and if you need to\ntravel further afield, Edinburgh Airport<\/a> can be found 13 miles and around 26\nminutes\u2019 drive to the south of Dunfermline and offers a range of domestic and\ninternational flight options.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are a 14 primary schools<\/a> to choose from in Dunfermline including\nhighly rated St Margaret’s R C Primary School, Duloch Schools and Community\nCampus, Dalgety Bay Primary School, Townhill Primary School and Crossford\nPrimary School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For secondary\nschool pupils there are four options \u2013 Dunfermline High School, which dates\nback to 1816, The Queen Anne High School, Woodmill High School and St Columba\u2019s\nRoman Catholic High School \u2013 and over 10,000 students attend Fife College in\nthe town, another gift to the area from Andew Carnegie. The college offers over\n400 further education HNC, HND and degree courses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and\namenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dunfermline is the retail hub for Fife, with the Kingsgate Shopping Centre<\/a> and a number of retails parks offering high street favourites such as M&S, New Look, Primark, Boots, Starbucks and Costa Coffee. When it comes to independent retailers, gift and homewares shop Art Room 59<\/a>, charming Abbots House<\/a> in the heritage quarter and children\u2019s shoe shop Tiger Feet<\/a> are popular and there is a monthly Farmer\u2019s<\/a> market and Small Business<\/a> market offering arts, crafts and food from local makers to raise money for charity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are\nplenty of places to drop in for a bite to eat in Dunfermline too, whatever your\npalate. Traditional Garvock House<\/a> and contemporary Jack\nO\u2019Bryan\u2019s<\/a> and Fabric<\/a> all offer seasonal Fife produce at its\nfinest and Indian restaurant Dhoom<\/a> is also a big hit with locals.   PJ\nMolloy & Son\u2019s and Monty\u2019s Bar fly the flag for Dunfermline nightlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dunfermline\nalso boasts the scenic 76 acre Pittencrieff Park<\/a> \u2013 known locally as \u2018the Glen\u2019, which\nhas three play areas, beautiful gardens and a flock of resident peacocks \u2013 plus\nTownhill Country Park<\/a> which is located on Town Loch. Townhill\nPark is home to a water sports centre, various sports pitches, cycle paths and\ntwo popular play areas for the little ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to\nthe Abbey, Palace and Carnegie Library, history buffs will enjoy learning more\nabout the area\u2019s most illustrious son at the Andrew\nCarnegie Birthplace Museum<\/a>\nor descending into the depths of St Margaret\u2019s Cave<\/a> \u2013 the atmospheric place of worship\nfavoured by Queen (and later Saint) Margaret in the 11th<\/sup> century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also\na wealth of sports activities on offer to keep the whole family entertained\nincluding rugby, golf, athletics, squash, swimming and cycle\nspeedway<\/a> clubs<\/a> and three leisure centres. The Hollywood Bowl<\/a>\nand Odeon<\/a> cinema are always a hit with younger members of the family\ntoo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is always\nplenty to keep you busy in Dunfermline!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Carnegie Hall<\/a>\nand the recently renovated Alhambra Theatre<\/a> date back to the 1920s and provide an\nextensive programme of theatre and live entertainment ranging from ballet and\nopera to stand-up comedy. Newcomer Fire\nStation Creative<\/a>,\nhoused \u2013 as you may expect \u2013 in the city\u2019s former fire station is a successful\narts hub, caf\u00e9 and bar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culture\nvultures will also be right at home at the wide-ranging Outwith\nFestival<\/a> which offers film,\nmusic, comedy, literature, theatre and art experiences across a range of venues\nin the town every September or the ever popular Fresh Air Festival. The town is\nalso home to the quirky Bruce Festival<\/a>\nwhich celebrates Scotland\u2019s most famous son each Autumn with events including\njousting, falconry displays, and medieval dancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime and\nsafety <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dunfermline is\npopular with families and commuters alike and the West Fife Division of Police\nScotland works closely with Fife Council<\/a> and the local community to prioritise\ngrowth, community led services and opportunities for all locally. There are\nalso numerous neighbourhood watch schemes<\/a> and community groups<\/a>\nacross the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
