Truro is the only\ncity in Cornwall in the south west of England, and with a population of just\nunder 20,000 people it is one of the smallest cities in the UK. Situated\noutside of the overcrowded Cornish coastline but within easy reach of beautiful\nbeaches, Truro is known for its architecture, cobbled streets and stunning\ncathedral<\/a>. It was once a thriving quayside town and continues to be\na tight knit community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beautiful period\nbuildings and large properties line the historic streets of the city, with an\naverage house price of \u00a3309,686<\/a> reflecting the desirability of the\narea, although Truro is much more affordable than Cornish hotspots like St\nMawes (\u00a31,075,636), Rock (\u00a31,055,936) and Polzeath (\u00a3914,400). In June 2021 the\ncity was awarded \u00a323.6 million<\/a> as part of the government\u2019s Towns Fund<\/a> to transform the city centre,\ncreating new amenities, transport links and social hubs. It\u2019s easy to see why\nthe area is rapidly becoming sought after by homebuyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cornwall has a\nreputation for being inaccessible, but with a train station<\/a> and a bus station in the centre\nof Truro, the city is easily reached. There are direct train services to London\nPaddington, Plymouth, Edinburgh and Cardiff Central, with one of only two sleeper trains<\/a> in the UK also running to\nnearby Penzance and north to Scotland. The Night Riviera<\/a> has seen renewed popularity in\nrecent years as eco-conscious travellers choose to take the train instead of\ndrive or fly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truro is located near the A30, A39 and A390, meaning those who prefer to travel by car can also access the city easily. National Express<\/a> runs coaches from the city to destinations across the UK, with local buses run by First Bus<\/a> and Go Cornwall<\/a>. International travel is made possible thanks to Newquay Airport<\/a> too, flying to a number of cities around the UK and Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools and Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The city has a\nstrong selection of both primary and secondary schools, with plenty of\nindependent options in line with demand in the area. Local primary schools such\nas Bosvigo\nSchool<\/a>, Archbishop Benson CofE Primary School<\/a>, Kea\nCommunity Primary School<\/a> and Shortlanesend\nSchool<\/a> are all rated \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018outstanding\u2019. Independent primary school\noptions include Polwhele House School<\/a>, a preparatory school\nfor ages 3-13, and all through schools Truro\nSchool<\/a> and Truro High School<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For secondary\nschool students, Penair School<\/a> and Richard\nLander School<\/a> are the only comprehensive choices within 5 miles of\nTruro although there are also several SEN schools locally too, such as Oak\nTree School<\/a>, Pencalenick School<\/a> and Three\nBridges<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Higher education\ncourses are offered at several of the secondary school sixth forms, including Truro School<\/a>\nand Truro\nHigh School<\/a>. Truro and Penwith College<\/a> is a dedicated\nfacility with campuses across the city and further afield in Penzance and\nBodmin, offering both 16-18 courses as well as 18+ options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The stunning\nscenery of Cornwall means Truro is the perfect spot for outdoorsy types looking\nfor the best of the British coast and countryside.Nearby St Agnes, Newquay andFalmouth offer picturesque beaches, whilst the King Harry Ferry<\/a> takes passengers to St\nMawes and the Roseland Peninsula<\/a>. There you\u2019ll find secluded coves,\npretty beaches and historic villages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walkers will be\nright at home with miles of coastal paths and unspoilt scenery, with large\nparts of Cornwall having been designated an Area of\nOutstanding Natural Beauty<\/a>. Truro\u2019s city centre also has its fair\nshare of parks, with Victoria Gardens<\/a>, Penrose\nWater Gardens<\/a>, and the Daubuz Moors<\/a> nature reserve all within easy\nreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truro is well known\nas a shopping destination too, with people travelling from all over the area to\nenjoy big name brands as well as independent shops and bustling cafes. The Pannier\nMarket<\/a> is a hub in the town, with shops selling fruit and veg,\nflowers, bread and cakes, and haberdashery. The high street boasts a Marks\n& Spencers, Waitrose, Joules and a large Primark, with the Lemon\nStreet Market<\/a> also offering an array of independent boutiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city\u2019s Victorian\ncathedral<\/a> is well worth a visit and it is one of only three\ncathedrals in the UK to have three spires (the other two being Lichfield\nCathedral in the West Midlands and St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh).\nThe cathedral runs regular tours as well as workshops, recitals and concerts.\nThe Royal\nCornwall Museum<\/a> is also located in Truro, with exhibitions focused on\nscience, art and local history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s On<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As Cornwall\u2019s\ncounty town, it\u2019s no surprise that Truro has a busy calendar of events all year\nround. The Hall for Cornwall<\/a> is a hub for arts and theatre, with live\nshows, concerts, touring productions and workshops all year round. There\u2019s also\nthe Burrell\nTheatre<\/a> and pop-up performance space Popp Theatre<\/a>\nbringing drama, dance and music to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truro has a long\nrunning reputation as one of the strongest entrants into the yearly Britain in Bloom<\/a> contest, winning Champion of\nChampions in 2018. Each year the Truro in Bloom Committee<\/a> plans a series of\nevents, installations and flower displays which showcase the best of the town\u2019s\nparks and gardens. Local businesses are always keen to support the sponsorship\nof hanging baskets and flower beds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September, Truro\nputs on an annual half marathon<\/a>, following a hilly route through\nthe city centre and surrounding countryside. Winter sees the yearly City of\nLights<\/a> festival take place, with the traditional lantern parade,\nChristmas lights switch on and performances from local artists and\nschoolchildren. The city\u2019s Lemon Quay plays host to a series of indoor and outdoor\nevents all year round, including the Made in\nCornwall Christmas Market<\/a>, Truro Food Festival<\/a> and even the Truro\nPrimestock Show<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime and Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Reassuringly for\nprospective homeowners viewing properties in the area, Truro has a relatively\nlow crime rate. The latest police figures<\/a> show that the area has a\nlower level of crime than other similar sized places in the UK including\nSomerset, Herefordshire and Cheshire West. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Truro\nSafe<\/a> partnership is part of the wider Safer Cornwall<\/a>\nscheme, which aims to reduce anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime in the\ncity. They also focus on issues such as domestic violence and homelessness and\nengage with the community to get feedback and respond to their concerns. A\nnumber of Neighbourhood Watch<\/a> schemes run in the city\ntoo, and local people are known to look out for each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
