Cardiff (or\nCaerdydd<\/em> in Welsh), the capital city of Wales,\nis located on the south coast and is now the 11th<\/sup> largest city in\nthe UK. Starting life as a small coastal town, Cardiff became a significant\ncoal-mining port in the 19th<\/sup> century which helped cement its city\nand later capital status in 1955. The city is also home to the highly rated,\nRussell Group Cardiff University and has a lively student population. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Significant\nregeneration since the 1980s and an impressive array of shops, eateries, bars\nand cultural landmarks such as the Wales Millennium Centre and Millennium\nStadium has also seen Cardiff become the commercial centre of Wales and a\npopular tourist destination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Property wise,\nthe upmarket Cardiff Bay area is home to modern, luxury apartment buildings and\nCardiff city is home to more traditional Victorian properties and terraces\npopular with students for their proximity to the city and university campus.\nLarger, family homes can be found in suburbs to the north of the city and the\nwest of the city is popular for its countryside connections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with nearby\nCardiff International Airport, fantastic rail links, extensive bus and coach\nservices and the nearby M4, transport connections couldn\u2019t be easier.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average\nproperty price in Cardiff over the last 12 months was a not unreasonable \u00a3268,119.\nThis is on par with the UK average and the County of Cardiff overall at \u00a3270,544.\nCardiff also offers a considerable saving compared to pricey Pentyrch (\u00a3474,154),\nConway Park (\u00a3423,311) Lisvane (\u00a3415,949) and nearby Penarth (\u00a3348,398).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport\nlinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As you might\nexpect from a capital city, Cardiff is well connected to the rest of Wales and\nbeyond by road, rail and air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two train\nstations within the city: Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street. Further\nstations are available at Cardiff Bay and in the suburbs such as Grangetown,\nNinian Park and Cathays as well. Cardiff Central<\/a>, the larger of the two main stations,\noffers direct services to Bridgend, Swansea and Newport, plus north Wales\nlocations Wrexham and Holyhead and services further afield to Bristol,\nBirmingham, London and Manchester. Cardiff Queen Street<\/a> offers services throughout the city, to\nCardiff Bay, the Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend and to South Wales Valleys destinations\nsuch as Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A470, A48\nand nearby M4 to the north of the city mean that Cardiff is well served by road\nconnections too. Swansea is 40 miles and around an hour\u2019s drive away, Newport less\nthan 25 minutes\u2019 drive and Bristol less than an hour via the Prince of Wales Bridge.\nThere are also a number of frequent bus services<\/a> available in and around the city and to\nnearby destinations like Barry, Penarth and Llantwit Major amongst others plus\nlong distance Megabus and Nation Express services to the likes of Bristol,\nBirmingham and London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For travelling\nfurther afield, Cardiff International Airport is 10 miles from the centre of\nthe city in the small village of Rhoose and offers various domestic and\ninternational flight options. The Airport also has its own train station with\nregular services to and from the city centre. There is a water taxi service\nrunning between the city centre and Cardiff Bay and from Cardiff Bay to Penarth\ntoo and from March to October there are boat services available to the small,\nWelsh island Flat Holm in the Bristol Channel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Cardiff area\nis home to a great selection of primary and secondary school options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are 3\nnursery schools, and an impressive 98 primary schools within the Cardiff\ncatchment areas, many of which offer Welsh language options. Severn Primary\nSchool, St Joseph\u2019s R.C. Primary School and St Mary\u2019s R.C. Primary School are\nall highly rated by the Welsh version of Ofsted, Estyn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes\nto secondary schools, there are 19 on offer, with Whitchurch High School,\nFitzalan High School and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf all popular options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independent\nschools include St John’s College, Llandaff Cathedral School, Cardiff Sixth\nForm College, Kings Monkton School and girls school Howell’s School, which\nadmits boys in the sixth form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardiff also\nhas a great range of further and higher education options in the form of Cardiff\nand Vale College and St David’s College plus universities Cardiff University,\nCardiff Metropolitan University, the University of South Wales and the Royal\nWelsh College of Music & Drama which serve nearly 50,000 students between\nthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are an extensive\nrange of baby and toddler activities<\/a> and nursery settings on offer locally as\nwell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and\namenities <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As you would expect\nfrom a capital city, Cardiff is a cultural and retail mecca with plenty of\namenities on offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a great\nselection of independent<\/a> shops, cafes and bars mixed in with more high\nstreet favourites than you could shake a stick at in the likes of the Victorian\nindoor market, Pontcanna Market, the Pumping Station, St\nDavid\u2019s Shopping Centre<\/a>, The Capitol Centre<\/a> and Queens Arcade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foodies will love\nCardiff\u2019s extensive list of eateries which include such delights as coffee\naficionados 200 Degrees<\/a>, ice cream specialists Cadwaladers<\/a>, Sri Lankan The\nCoconut Tree<\/a> and Marco Pierre White\u2019s Steakhouse Bar and Grill<\/a> amongst many, many others. Cosy pubs\nlike The City Pub, The Butcher\u2019s Arms and micro pub\u2019s Tiny Rebel and St Canna’s\nAle House, smart cocktail bars like Lab 22, The Dead Canary and the Libertine\nplus lively clubs Philharmonic Cardiff, Tiger Tiger and Popworld are just a\nsmall segment of the vibrant Cardiff nightlife. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city\u2019s rich\nhistory and culture can be experienced at the National\nMuseum Cardiff<\/a> and Medieval Cardiff Castle<\/a> and there is plenty to keep outdoor enthusiasts\nhappy with the stunning\ncountryside of the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons on the doorstep and parks<\/a> like Bute Park, Victoria Park and Roath Park plus the Taff Trail within\nthe city itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cardiff is home to a\nbusy and varied calendar of local events and activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are numerous\nannual festivals like The Inside Out Festival, multi-genre HUB music festival\nand City Jam and the popular Cardiff Christmas Market is not to be missed. When\nit comes to live entertainment the Cardiff New Theatre, St David\u2019s Hall and the\nWales\nMillennium Centre<\/a> won\u2019t disappoint either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardiff locals are\nalso a sporty lot and there are a range of options on offer to suit all\ninterests whether it be proudly watching the national rugby team at the\nMillennium Stadium, or getting stuck in themselves at the Cardiff Triathlon<\/a>, Motocross<\/a>, Roller\nDerby<\/a> and naked\nbike riding<\/a>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More traditional\npursuits like football, cricket and golf are also on offer plus a range of gyms\nand fitness centres for all abilities such as Pure Gym, The Compound, Agility\nladies gym and Cardiff International Pool & Gym<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once voted the UK\u2019s\nmost sociable city, prospective residents will be pleased to hear that Cardiff\nhas been declared one of the UK\u2019s 10 safest areas to live in, according to a new study<\/a> by Confused.com thanks to low crime figures and the sense of security\nfelt by locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The local Neighbourhood Policing Team<\/a> run initiatives to improve the health,\nsafety and wellbeing of the local community alongside the Cardiff Community Safety Partnership<\/a> and there are a number of\nNeighbourhood Watch schemes<\/a> locally too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
