The attractive seaside\ntown of Filey is located on the North Yorkshire coast, 6 miles from Scarborough\nto the north and 10 miles from Bridlington to the south and an hour from both York<\/a> and Hull. A former fishing village and farming community, recent\nexcavations suggest that a settlement has existed in the area since the Roman occupation,\nand it is thought that Filey could be the site of the former Roman settlement\nof Portus Felix. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 18th<\/sup>\ncentury, Filey became popular with visitors to nearby Scarborough in search of\na seaside idyl away from the hustle and bustle. 19th<\/sup> century\nnovelist Charlotte Bront\u00eb (of Jane Eyre<\/em> fame) was said to be a regular\nvisitor to the town and a Butlin\u2019s Holiday Camp was even established in 1945\nand remained in the area until 1984.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps less\nwell-known today than its holiday hotspot neighbours Whitby and Scarborough,\nFiley has plenty on offer to appeal to visitors and homebuyers alike. Indeed,\nthe town\u2019s stunning 10 miles of sandy coastline even won the coveted title of The\nSunday Times\u2019 \u2018Beach of the Year\u2019<\/em> in recent years and the global travel brand\nRough Guides also rate the seaside town highly<\/a>. Transport links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite its coastal\nlocation, Filey has good road and rail links. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Filey train station<\/a> is on the Yorkshire Coast Line and offers regular services between Scarborough\nand Hull via Bridlington with onward services to Doncaster and Sheffield, the\nlatter being reached in around 2 hours 30 minutes directly or 1 hour and 50\nminutes via a change at Seamer and York. Scarborough, Bridlington and Hull are 16,\n23 and 1 hour 5 minutes away respectively. The town is also home to a bus\nstation offering regular services<\/a> in and around the town and surrounding areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For drivers, the A165\npasses directly east of the town, connecting Filey with Scarborough to the\nnorth and Hull to the south and the A1039 provides a link to the A64 and nearby\nYork around 40 miles away. For those travelling further afield, international\nLeeds Bradford Airport is around an hour and half\u2019s drive away and Teesside\nAirport 1 hour 40 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are 3 schools\nwithin Filey itself: Filey Church of England Nursery and Infants Academy, Filey\nJunior School and secondary school EBOR Academy. Many Filey residents attend Hunmanby\nPrimary School, and this is also a feeder school for EBOR Academy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearby Scarborough\nCollege is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for children aged\n3-18 years old and Scarborough TEC (Teaching, Education and Careers) provides\nan extensive range of further and higher education courses. There are also plenty of high street and independent retailers<\/a> on offer including the quirky Mrs Bishop\u2019s Doggie Deli full of delights\nfor your four-legged friends, Filey stalwarts Sterchi\u2019s Chocolatiers \u2013 who have\nbeen providing the town with sweet treats since 1919 \u2013 and popular All Seasons\nFruit and Vegetables grocery store and H G Lovitt fishmongers. The retail\ncentres of Hull and York and the impressive McArthurGlen Designer Outlet<\/a> are also within easy reach of Filey\nfor those in need of a serious retail fix. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to\ndining out, popular eateries in the town include The White Lodge Hotel\nRestaurant with its scenic views over Filey Bay, the contemporary Glasshouse\ncaf\u00e9, Tommy\u2019s bar and diner and coffee aficionados Frothies to name but a few.\nAnd you can pick up those ubiquitous seaside fish and chips from CJ\u2019s Fish and\nChips. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
