The cathedral\ncity of Lichfield is located in the West Midlands County of Staffordshire, 18\nmiles north of Birmingham and southeast of county town Stafford. Rich in\nhistory, with a settlement existing locally since prehistoric times, Lichfield\nwas granted city status in the sixteenth century despite its modest size thanks\nto the presence of its longstanding diocesan cathedral<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the\nimpressive 14th century Lichfield Cathedral<\/a> building remains at the heart of the\ncity alongside much of the city\u2019s prominent historical architecture, giving Lichfield\na more traditional feel than many local towns and cities in the heart of the\nurban Midlands. The town\u2019s proximity to nearby Birmingham, Tamworth, Burton\nupon Trent and Sutton Coldfield makes it popular with commuters looking for a\nmore relaxed place to call home with the Staffordshire Moorlands countryside\nand Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the doorstep. Not to\nmention great local amenities, schools and leisure facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samuel Johnson\nmay have said \u201cWhen a man is tired of London, he is tired of life\u201d but the great\nliterary figure\u2019s hometown also takes some beating! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average\nproperty price in Lichfield over the last 12 months was \u00a3314,787, reflecting\nits popularity within the wider Staffordshire region. However, Lichfield still\noffers very good value in comparison to Dunston Heath (\u00a3700,000), nearby Shenstone\n(\u00a3575,024) and Brocton (\u00a3513,050). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport\nlinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As you might\nexpect given its central location, Lichfield is well connected to the rest of\nthe West Midlands and the UK beyond by road and rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its\nsmall size there are two train stations in Lichfield. Lichfield City<\/a> station provides frequent services on\nthe Cross-City Line to Redditch and Bromsgrove via Birmingham with services to\nBirmingham New Street in 35 minutes. Lichfield Trent Valley<\/a> station on the north-eastern edge of\nthe city is the northern terminus station for the Cross-City Line and also\nprovides frequent services on the West Coast Main Line connecting London and\nGlasgow to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh. From Lichfield\nTrent Valley, London Euston can be reached in an hour and a half and Crewe in\n35 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A38, A51,\nand nearby A5 and M6 Toll Road mean that Lichfield is extremely well served by\nroad connections too. Birmingham is half an hour\u2019s drive and Derby and\nLeicester an hour away. There are also a number of frequent bus services\navailable from the city\u2019s central bus station<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For travelling\nfurther afield, Birmingham International Airport is less than half an hour away\nby road and an hour by train, offering various domestic and international\nflight options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lichfield is\nhome to a good selection of primary and secondary school options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are 10\nprimary schools, one of which is infants only. Willows Primary School has been\nrated \u2018outstanding\u2019 by Ofsted, with all other primary school settings receiving\na \u2018good\u2019 rating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes\nto secondary schools, there are three within Lichfield itself: The Friary\nSchool, selective King Edward VI School and Nether Stowe School which\nspecialises in maths and computing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staffordshire\nUniversity and South Staffordshire College also have a campus in Lichfield\nwhich offers a range of further and higher education courses including Master\u2019s\ndegrees. The college has been graded as offering ‘outstanding provision’ by\nOfsted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lichfield is\nalso home to a good range of baby and toddler activities<\/a> and nursery settings too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and\namenities <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lively Lichfield has\na good selection of high street and independent retailers, particularly in the Three\nSpires Shopping Centre<\/a>, picturesque Tudor Row<\/a> and the thrice weekly market and producers market<\/a> on Market Square<\/a>. There are also a range of supermarkets on offer\nfor all the essentials which includes Waitrose, Tesco and Aldi.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to an\ninformal lunch or dining out in style, Lichfield ticks the boxes with popular\nlocal eateries including Michelin rated Larder<\/a>, Lal Bagh<\/a> Indian restaurant, The Boat\nInn<\/a> and Bistro\n1709<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impressive Lichfield\nCathedral \u2013 the focal point of the town and scene of many Civil War battles for\nterritory during the 17th<\/sup> Century \u2013 tells the story of Lichfield\u2019s rich\nheritage, as do the Lichfield Heritage Centre<\/a>, the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum<\/a> and the Erasmus\nDarwin Museum<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also plenty\nof fun of the outdoor variety to be had at Lichfield\u2019s various parks<\/a> such as 70 acre Beacon Park<\/a> with its impressive play area, sports facilities,\ngolf course, beautiful gardens and pedalos on Beacon Pool, local nature reserve\nChristian Fields and Saddlers Wood. The nearby National\nMemorial Arboretum<\/a> in Alrewas is definitely worth a visit too.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adrenaline\njunkies will also enjoy nearby theme parks Drayton\nManor<\/a> and Alton Towers\nwhich are 15 and 45 minutes away respectively.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lichfield is home to\na busy and varied calendar of local events and activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are numerous\nannual festivals like Oktoberfest<\/a>, the Lichfield Folk Festival<\/a>, the Lichfield\nFestival<\/a> of music and arts,\nthe Lichfield Literature Festival<\/a> and Fuse<\/a>. The award-winning Garrick\nTheatre<\/a> hosts an impressive\nroster of live music events, theatre, comedy, drama and cinema plus a popular\nChristmas pantomime and there is a lively nightlife in the city with the likes\nof Beerbohm, The Wine House, Le R\u00eave, 55 Wade Street and Walkabout all popular\nwith locals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lichfield locals are\nalso a sporty lot, with football, cricket, rugby, hockey and archery clubs on\noffer plus a range of golf courses, gyms and fitness centres for all abilities\nsuch as Gymphobics<\/a> ladies gym, the Lichfield Health and Fitness Club<\/a> and Friary Grange Leisure Centre<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
