There\u2019s a lot to be\nsaid for residing in one of the best places to live in the UK, and the market\ntown of Selby in North Yorkshire took 6th<\/sup> place in the annual\nHalifax Quality of Life Survey in 2020, whilst also taking the coveted first\nplace title of the best place to live in Yorkshire in the same survey.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The market town has a riverside\nlocation on the River Ouse around 14 miles south of York and 26 miles east of\nLeeds, making it popular with commuters to both cities. Originally an\nAnglo-Saxon settlement dating back to the 8th<\/sup> century, Selby, like\nnearby York, also has Viking links and a strong shipbuilding heritage thanks to\nits location on the Shelby Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around an hour from the Howardian\nHills AONB, North York Moors and the Nidderdale\nArea of Outstanding National Beauty and just over an hour from the Yorkshire\ncoast, Selby itself also offers great local amenities, good schools and leisure\nfacilities and provides a more affordable alternative for homebuyers priced out\nof some of Yorkshire\u2019s more expensive towns and villages.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, homes in\nSelby sold for an average price of \u00a3179,340 over the last 12 months.\nSignificantly more affordable than the North Yorkshire region overall at\n\u00a3275,555 and particularly towns such as Pannal (\u00a3611,142) nearby Escrick (\u00a3532,631) and Osmotherley (\u00a3521,417).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There have also been\na number of projects to develop Selby\u2019s residential areas in recent years, with\nnew homes available at Staynor Hall to the southeast, Holmes Lane and nearby\nvillages Brayton, Barlby and Thorpe Willoughby. Disused industrial areas of the\nriverfront which used to house Selby\u2019s shipbuilding trade have also been\nredeveloped into impressive new homes too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Selby has good road\nand rail links, making it an ideal spot for commuters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selby\u2019s was the first\ntown in Yorkshire to receive a train station<\/a> in 1834, and the current station dates back to 1840. Regular services\nto Hull, Manchester Piccadilly, York, Leeds and London Kings Cross are\navailable as well as a number of local destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town is also home\nto a bus station offering regular services<\/a> in and around the town and surrounding\nvillages and longer distance services to Goole, Doncaster, Leeds, Pontefract,\nWakefield and York amongst others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main road passing\nthrough the town is the A19 from Doncaster to Hull and the A63 Selby Bypass\nwill have you in Leeds in 45 minutes via the M1. For those travelling further\nafield, international Leeds Bradford Airport is around 34 miles and less than an\nhour\u2019s drive away or around an hour and a half by train. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are 7 primary\nschools within Selby itself: Selby Abbey Church of England Primary School, Selby\nCommunity Primary School, Barlby Bridge Community Primary School, Longman’s\nHill Community Primary School, Barwic Parade Community Primary School and St Mary’s\nCatholic Primary School. All of which have received a \u2018good\u2019 rating from\nOfsted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to\nsecondary schools, local options Selby High School Specialist School for the\nArts and Science and Brayton Academy are both highly rated and have received a\n\u2018good\u2019 and \u2018outstanding\u2019 rating from Ofsted respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those seeking further\nand higher education have a number of options locally. Selby\nCollege<\/a> offers A Levels, work-related\nvocational courses, apprenticeships, business training and adult education\ncourses and the highly rated University\nof York<\/a> and University\nof Leeds<\/a> are 25 and 40\nminutes away. Durham University<\/a>, Newcastle\nUniversity<\/a> and Northumbria\nUniversity<\/a> are also within easy\nreach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the other end of\nthe spectrum, Selby is home to a great range of baby and toddler groups<\/a> and highly rated nurseries<\/a> for the younger members of the family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Whilst the retail\ncentres of Leeds<\/a> and York<\/a> and the impressive McArthurGlen Designer Outlet<\/a> are all a short journey from Selby for\nthose in need of a serious retail fix, Selby itself is home to all the\nessentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are numerous\nsupermarkets like Sainsburys, Tesco, Aldi and Morrisons plus a good selection\nof high street and independent retailers and eateries on and around Gowthorpe\nincluding the Market Cross Shopping Centre, Abbey Walk Retail Park and the\nThree Lakes Retail Park. Popular Selby\nMarket<\/a> is over 700 years\nold and also offers a vibrant monthly farmer\u2019s market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to\ndining out, locals rate The Black Dog Inn, The Olive Branch, Sapori Italian\nRestaurant and Loftsome Bridge Boutique Hotel & Restaurant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of Yorkshire\u2019s\nmost stunning national parks are within easy reach of Selby and the town itself\nis home to 5 acre Selby Park<\/a>, Croftway Park and play area, Leeds Road Park, Wistow Road play area and\nSelby Amphitheatre and Waterfront Gardens, with Skipwith Common National Nature\nReserve on the doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impressive Selby\nAbbey<\/a>, the focal point of\nthe town and birthplace of King Henry I in 1068, tells the story of Selby\u2019s strong\ncultural heritage and there is a restoration project in place in the town via\nthe Selby High Street Heritage Action Zone<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is a strong\ncommunity in Selby with plenty of local events and activities on offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual Selby Food Festival<\/a> is always a big hit with locals and\nvisitors alike offering tastings, cookery demonstrations, street entertainment\nand live music and the Selby Globe Cinema<\/a> is a not-for-profit organisation run\nby volunteer film-lovers which provides classic and contemporary screenings at\ntheir Selby Town Hall venue and throughout the Selby district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fitness fans will\nappreciate Selby Leisure Centre<\/a>\u2019s great range of classes, top of the\nrange gym equipment and swimming pools and clubs for football, rugby, cricket,\nmotor racing and golf. The Selby Superbowl<\/a> is also popular with all ages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As you would expect\nfrom a town frequently voted one of the best places to live in the UK, crime\nrates are lower than average<\/a> for the North Yorkshire force area and\nthe local Neighbourhood Policing Team<\/a> run a number of initiatives to\nencourage safety and reduce crime locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
