Located in the East London Borough of Newham,\nthe district of Canning Town has had a varied history. The area was primarily\nmarshlands until the arrival of the North London Line railway and the creation\nof the Royal Victoria Dock in the 19th<\/sup> century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A centre for shipping and heavy industry for\nmuch of the 19th<\/sup> and 20th<\/sup> century, Canning Town was not\nconsidered a particularly desirable place to live. However, in the last 30\nyears the area has seen significant regeneration in the form of residential\ndevelopments, restaurants and leisure amenities like the ExCeL London exhibition\nand convention centre and transport links such as the Docklands Light Railway,\nJubilee Line, nearby London City Airport, and the Emirates Air Line cable car\nwhich connects the area with the Greenwich Peninsula to the south. Around \u00a33.7\nbillion<\/a> has been spent on a regeneration scheme focusing on both Canning\nTown and nearby Custom House and there is more to come, with \u00a3600 million\nallocated for a new town centre due in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an average house price of \u00a3402,088 over\nthe last 12 months, Canning Town is more affordable than the Borough of Newham\noverall (\u00a3449,225). Particularly more expensive areas such as Victoria Docks (\u00a3534,783),\nSilvertown (\u00a3523,928) and Little Ilford (\u00a3505,749), making it a desirable, up\nand coming spot for forward thinking homebuyers after more for their money in\nthe pricey capital city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Canning Town\nbenefits from being on the Docklands Light Railway Line<\/a> and the Jubilee\nLine<\/a>. DLR services run from Canning Town, nearby Custom House and\nRoyal Victoria and Canary Wharf is just 4 minutes away on the Jubilee Line,\nmaking Canning Town particularly attractive to young professionals who\nappreciate the area\u2019s more affordable property prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who\nprefer to travel by car, the A13 is located nearby, and the North Circular also\nprovides easy access. The Emirates Cable Car<\/a> which takes passengers\nacross the River Thames to Greenwich is perfect for days out or when you want\nto change up the commute!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London City Airport is just three stops away on the DLR, making international travel easy, and with quick connections to Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport from central London, Canning Town is perfect for jetsetters looking for exotic breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools and Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Canning Town has\ngood school provision for all ages. There are several primary schools, of which\nSt\nJoachim’s Catholic Primary School<\/a>, Britannia\nVillage Primary School<\/a>, Tollgate\nPrimary School<\/a>, Hallsville Primary School<\/a> and Kaizen Primary School<\/a> were rated \u2018outstanding\u2019\nat the last Ofsted inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For older students,\nthere is also an array of choices for all kinds of learners. Royal\nDocks Academy<\/a>, Oasis Academy Silvertown<\/a>, Kingsford\nCommunity School<\/a> and Brampton Manor Academy<\/a> all come highly\nrecommended. There\u2019s also independent options in Jasper\nCity School<\/a> and Greenwich Steiner School<\/a>, and there are\nseveral specialist schools locally including Greenwich\nEngineering and Medical School<\/a> and Pulse and Water\nCollege<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the\nsecondary schools also provide 16-18 education, with Newham Sixth Form\nCollege<\/a>, Newham College of Further Education<\/a> and Newham Collegiate\nSixth Form Centre<\/a> also offering places to school leavers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the youngest\nresidents of Canning Town, Keir Hardie Primary School<\/a> runs a Children\u2019s Centre<\/a> with lots of activities for babies\nand toddlers including Stay and Play, Baby Club, Baby and Toddler Group and Gym\nTots. The sessions are always popular and advance booking is advised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While much of\nCanning Town\u2019s centre is still under development, the neighbourhood benefits\nfrom being close to Stratford and the Royal Docks<\/a>. Westfield\nStratford City<\/a> shopping centre is just two stops away on the train,\nwith a huge selection of high street shops, designer brands, eateries, and\nentertainment venues. In 2015 a new market square opened on the historic Rathbone\nMarket <\/a>site, offering a pedestrianised market four times a week with\na variety of stalls and traders. Fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, clothes, accessories,\nand hot food are all available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nearby Royal Docks<\/a>\nis well known for its selection of restaurants and bars, as well as hosting\nevents throughout the year and being a hub for arts and culture. There are lots\nof highly recommended restaurants including Nakhon Thai<\/a> for Thai cuisine, The Crystal\nCafe<\/a> for a casual lunch, and the Land\u2019s End Restaurant<\/a> for the ultimate\nsuperyacht dining experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those looking\nto escape the buzz of the city, there are plenty of parks and green spaces on\nCanning Town\u2019s doorstep. Bow Creek<\/a>, East India Dock Basin<\/a> and Canning Town Recreation Ground<\/a> are all popular\nwith walkers and outdoor explorers, with the latter boasting a wildflower\nmeadow, tennis courts, climbing wall and the Cycle\nSpeedway Club<\/a>. There\u2019s also nearby Balaam Leisure Centre<\/a> for fitness classes, a pool,\nand a gym.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s On<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Residents of\nCanning Town enjoy a variety of activities and events throughout the year. The ExCeL London<\/a>\nhosts a huge range of conventions, conferences, live shows, and exhibitions\nwith something to suit all tastes, including kids shows and business events.\nThe nearby O2\nArena<\/a> plays host to world class musicians, sports, comedy, and\nentertainment and is a stone\u2019s throw away from the centre of Canning Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s also the Theatre Royal\nStratford East<\/a> which puts on productions, films, and a yearly\npantomime. Similarly, the nearby Greenhouse Theatre<\/a> is perfect for culture\nvultures with an eco-friendly conscience. They are the UK\u2019s first zero-waste\ntheatre, hosting shows, events, and workshops all whilst campaigning for\nclimate change action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the summer\nthe riverside really comes alive, with the Dock Beach<\/a> serving up a slice of seaside\nliving in the heart of the capital. As well as the sandy beach, food traders,\nfilm screenings and exercise classes are also on offer. There\u2019s the Royal Wharf Summer Fete<\/a> complete with lawn\ngames and face painting, and the Riverscape Pop Up<\/a> hosts Street Food Fridays <\/a>and a farmers market. With\nthe yearly Summer Lights<\/a> exhibition (the sister event to\nthe ever popular Winter Lights) also open around Canary Wharf, the local area\nhas lots to keep you busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Reassuringly for prospective homeowners in the area, the level of crime in Canning Town is comparable with similar areas such as Greenwich, Lewisham and Enfield. The Safer Neighbourhoods Team works closely with the Metropolitan Police to provide tailored services in the local area, along with Dedicated Ward Officers<\/a> who cover the Newham area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local residents\nalso look out for each other with several Neighbourhood Watch<\/a> schemes in the area which\nare proven to reduce crime, deter anti-social behaviour and create a sense of\ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
