Tonbridge is a charming market town situated in the county of Kent. Nestled on the banks of the River Medway, 4 miles from Royal Tunbridge Wells and just 30 miles from London, it is perfect for commuters as well as families looking to move out of the capital. Known for being home to one of the most impressive motte and bailey castles<\/a> in the UK, and for the manufacture of decorative wooden boxes known as Tunbridge Ware<\/a>, Tonbridge is a historic location with much to offer for prospective residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, great\ntransport links, excellent schools and an interesting local history make this a\nhighly desirable destination for homebuyers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Victorian, Edwardian and more modern homes available, potential buyers are spoilt for choice when it comes to properties. The average house price came in at \u00a3484,119 over the last year, which was on par with the South East overall, if a little more expensive than the Kent average. However, Tonbridge still offers exceptional value in comparison to neighbours Speldhurst, Ightham and Plaxtol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tonbridge is known\nfor being very well connected, and it’s train station<\/a> is one of the busiest in Kent.\nIt\u2019s no surprise seeing as the line runs to Charing Cross in central London in\naround 40 minutes, as well as Ashford, Redhill, and Hastings. Both the bustle\nof the city and the calm of the Kent countryside are just a short journey away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly,\ntravelling by car is easy and convenient in Tonbridge, with the M25 only 10\nmiles away. There\u2019s also the nearby A21 and A26, and Arriva Southern\nCounties<\/a> buses offering a reliable service across the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For international travellers, Gatwick Airport<\/a> is just 35 minutes away by car, with flights to a number of destinations within Europe and the rest of the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools and Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tonbridge is\nrenowned for its great schools and is home to one of the most prestigious in\nthe country, Tonbridge School<\/a>. This historic, independent\nboarding and day school for boys has been open since 1553. The town also has\nseveral grammar schools, with Kent being one of few remaining areas in the UK\nwith selective institutions. The Judd School<\/a>, Weald\nof Kent Grammar School<\/a> and Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls<\/a> are all\npopular local options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the secondary schools in the area are known for having teaching specialisms, with Leigh Academy<\/a> focusing on sports and mathematics, Hillview School for Girls<\/a> having Performing Arts status and Leigh Academy Hugh Christie<\/a> being an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The primary schools in the town are also well regarded. In particular, Stocks Green Primary School<\/a>, Woodlands Primary School<\/a>, Long Mead Community Primary School<\/a> and Sussex Road Community Primary School<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For higher education, many school leavers choose one of the sixth form settings available at the town\u2019s secondary schools, or nearby North Kent College<\/a>. There\u2019s also a University of Kent<\/a> campus called the Tonbridge Centre<\/a>, offering short courses and study days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tonbridge is known for its sporting facilities, with several clubs and sports centres in the town. Tonbridge Farm Sportsground<\/a> is home to a skatepark, football pitches, ball court and cricket field. Tonbridge Swimming Pool<\/a> has both an indoor and an outdoor pool, as well as lessons and child sessions too. There\u2019s also the popular Tonbridge Town Sailing Club<\/a> and the Tonbridge Canoe Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who prefer the retail or dining experience, Tonbridge has plenty to offer. The High Street has many independent shops, with bigger brands available in the nearby Bluewater<\/a> shopping centre and Tunbridge Wells<\/a>. There\u2019s the Cannon Lane Retail Park just outside the town centre also, and a farmer\u2019s market<\/a> runs every 2nd Sunday of the month with traders selling fresh produce, fish, and meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tonbridge has\nplenty on offer for all members of the family, with great activity centres and\ndays out suitable for any age. Popular Carroty\nWood<\/a> is a residential centre offering away days and activity\nholidays for school groups and families and Mr\nMulligan\u2019s Dino Golf<\/a> is a dinosaur themed mini golf course which also\nhosts birthday parties, events and school groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s On<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With a number of busy leisure venues in the town, Tonbridge has a wide range of activities and events on offer throughout the year. The Oast Theatre<\/a> is one of the most prolific, putting on ten productions a year and hosting a Youth Theatre programme, plus exhibitions from the in-house Art Group. Tonbridge Castle<\/a> is another historic building which has been transformed into a public venue. The castle and its grounds hold markets, history trails, open air music concerts, theatre productions<\/a> and even outdoor cinema. For music lovers, there\u2019s also the annual Tonbridge Music Weekend<\/a>, held at the Juddians Rugby Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tonbridge Racecourse Sportsground<\/a> has a range of facilities including a skate park, sports pitches, and crazy golf. There are also several walking routes including the Eden Valley Walk<\/a> and the Wealdway Walk<\/a> which can be accessed from the site. Haysden Country Park<\/a>, the Hadlow River Walk<\/a> and the Tonbridge to Penshurst Cycle Route<\/a> are also ideal ways to explore the nearby Kent countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For families, there\u2019s plenty to do in Tonbridge. The annual Dragon Boat Race run by the Tonbridge Lions<\/a> sees teams battle it out to be crowned the fastest to sail the River Medway, all while raising money for local charities. The Spa Valley Railway<\/a> is also not to be missed. Kids love the steam trains, and for adults they run The Kent Gin Train<\/a> and Real Ale Train events!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
