Thanks to its\nlocation in between the buzz of central London and the countryside of\nHertfordshire, Barnet is rapidly becoming a highly sought-after area. A\nsuburban town within the borough of the same name, Barnet boasts good\namenities, great schools and efficient transport links and it\u2019s perfect for\nfamilies and professionals who aren\u2019t ready to give up London life. Independent\nshops and restaurants, green spaces, and a weekly market<\/a> give Barnet a small-town feel, with\ncentral London just 20 minutes away on the Tube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With average house\nprices coming in at \u00a3718,077 over the last year (and up 6%), the area\u2019s\ndesirability is reflected in the housing market. However, Barnet is still more\naffordable than North London (\u00a3797,188) and the borough overall (\u00a3737,945),\nparticularly nearby Hampstead Garden Suburb (\u00a31,237,135). In terms of\nproperties, Barnet boasts Victorian terraces, Georgian townhouses, and modern\nflats, making it popular with a range of homebuyers who also tend to stay in\nthe area long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Barnet\u2019s transport links\nare excellent, no matter what form of transport you choose to take. High Barnet underground station<\/a> connects the\narea to central London via the Northern line, with King\u2019s Cross just 20 minutes\naway. There\u2019s also New Barnet train station<\/a> with services to\nHertfordshire and Moorgate in less than 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barnet also offers reliable\nbus services provided by Transport\nfor London<\/a> which take passengers to destinations across London, and for\nthose who prefer to travel by car the M25 is just 5 minutes\u2019 drive away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International\ntravel is also made easy with Stansted Airport<\/a> just 40 minutes\u2019 drive away,\nand Heathrow\nAirport<\/a> 50 minutes away. There are regular Eurostar<\/a>\ntrain departures leaving from nearby St Pancras International<\/a> too with stops in\nParis and Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools and Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In line with demand\nin the area, Barnet has a number of good state, grammar and independent\nschools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For primary aged\nchildren, many of the schools were rated \u2018outstanding\u2019 or \u2018good\u2019 at the last\nOfsted inspection. These include St Catherine\u2019s Catholic Primary School<\/a>, Grasvenor\nAvenue Infant School<\/a>, Cromer Road Primary School<\/a>, Foulds School<\/a>\nand Whitings Hill Primary School<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are several\nstrong secondary schools in the area with options to suit a range of educational\nneeds including Totteridge Academy<\/a>, Southgate\nSchool<\/a>, Queen Elizabeth\u2019s Girls School<\/a> and the Ark Pioneer Academy<\/a>.\nMany of the secondary schools also have sixth forms and offer higher education\nplaces, with Barnet and Southgate College<\/a> providing\nvocational training, apprenticeships, and industry placements alongside A\nLevels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independent options\ninclude St John\u2019s Preparatory and Senior School<\/a>, Mount House\nSchool<\/a>, Lyonsdown School<\/a> and the world renowned\nperforming arts school where Amy Winehouse studied, Susi Earnshaw\nTheatre School<\/a>. Queen Elizabeth\u2019s School<\/a> offers grammar school\neducation for boys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of Barnet\u2019s\nbest features is its wide range of local amenities and facilities. There\u2019s a market<\/a> twice\na week selling fresh produce, meat, cakes, fish and bread, as well as a Teenage\nMarket<\/a> encouraging young people to be entrepreneurial. Barnet is\nalso well known for its independent eateries, having been a coaching town for\nmany years. Highlights include L\u2019Antica<\/a> for pizzas, Spizzico<\/a>\nfor brunch, lunch and dinner, and cocktail bars Melange<\/a>\nand Hadley\nHouse<\/a> for late night vibes. The recently regenerated Spires\nShopping Centre<\/a> houses high street brands as well as several\nindependent stores, making Barnet ideal for shopping lovers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who\nprefer the great outdoors, Barnet also has plenty to offer. Historic Monken\nHadley<\/a> retains much of its ancient rural character, and is also home\nto a common<\/a>\nwith woodland and a lake. There are numerous other green spaces and walking\ntrails nearby thanks to London\u2019s green belt, including Hadley Green<\/a>, Pymmes Brook Trail<\/a> and Dollis Valley Greenwalk<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Golfers are also well catered for, with an impressive three golf courses in the area. Old Fold Manor<\/a>, Dyrham Park Country Club<\/a> and The Shire<\/a> are all a short distance away, and offer 18 hole courses with stunning views of the Hertfordshire countryside. New Barnet Leisure Centre has a schedule of more than 80 fitness classes a week, as well as a pool and outdoor tennis courts, and Old Courthouse Recreation Ground<\/a> has gardens, a children\u2019s play area and caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Barnet has a busy\nsocial calendar, with residents enjoying a range of activities and events. One\nof the most well-known is the Barnet Medieval Festival<\/a>, a celebration of the\nimportant role Barnet played in the War of the Roses and the Battle of Barnet.\nReenactments, performances from local primary schools, archery displays, a\nmedieval market and history encampments are all regular fixtures at this well\nattended event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For culture\nvultures, The Bull Theatre<\/a> puts on a range of shows including comedy,\nplays, magic shows and a yearly pantomime. The theatre is also home to a\nvariety of other groups and classes including Curtain Up! \u2013 a theatre group for\nadults with special educational needs \u2013 Elders Dance Class for over 50\u2019s and\namateur dramatics group The Bull Theatre Players. There\u2019s also the Everyman\nCinema<\/a>, which has been open since 1935 and is known for its\nbeautiful art deco building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year in\nDecember, Barnet also hosts its Christmas Fayre<\/a> on the High Street. The road\nis closed to cars, and filled with festive stalls, a funfair, a Christmas\nparade, music, and children\u2019s shows. For car lovers there\u2019s also the annual Classic Car Show<\/a> which sees a parade of cars\ndrive through the town before setting up at The Spires Shopping Centre with\nmusic and refreshment stalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Reassuringly for\nhomebuyers, the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment<\/a> shows Barnet\nto be one of the safest boroughs in the capital, with crime rates falling\noverall in recent years. There is a dedicated and cohesive crime prevention\nteam in the area, with The Barnet Safer\nCommunities Partnership<\/a> working with the Metropolitan\nPolice<\/a>, Barnet Council<\/a> and the London Fire\nBrigade<\/a> to reduce offences and anti-social behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The community looks\nout for each other too, with several Neighbourhood Watch<\/a> schemes in and around\nBarnet contributing to the small town feel of the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
