The town of\nSouthend-on-Sea (also known as just \u201cSouthend\u201d) is an Essex seaside town on the\nnorthern banks of the Thames Estuary located in the borough of the same name. A\nformer fishing hamlet, the town has been popular with holiday makers (including\nroyalty!) since the arrival of the railway in the 19th<\/sup> century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southend\u2019s\nfamous pier<\/a>\n(the longest of its kind in the world) and stunning coastline continues to\nattract visitors and homebuyers alike. With a good range of local amenities and\nexcellent transport links \u2013 nearby Basildon is less than 20 minutes away and\nLondon stations Fenchurch Street and Liverpool Street around an hour by train \u2013\nencouraging many to make a more permanent move to the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competitive\nhouse prices don\u2019t hurt either. The average house price in Southend-on-Sea over\nthe last 12 months was \u00a3339,185. A lot more affordable than Essex overall (\u00a3404,623)\nand especially hotspots like Herongate (\u00a31,150,600), Ramsden Bellhouse (\u00a31,150,429)\nand Downham (\u00a31,034,417).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Southend is a well-connected town with a mix\nof reliable road, rail and air links across Essex and further afield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town is served by 2 main railway stations\nalongside many smaller, regional stations within the wider borough. Southend\nVictoria<\/a> is the terminus of the Shenfield\u2013Southend Line offering regular\nservices to Basildon and London Liverpool Street amongst others. Southend\nCentral<\/a> is on the London, Tilbury and Southend Line with services to London\nFenchurch Street in just under an hour and Shoeburyness in 8 minutes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A127 (the Southend Arterial Road) runs\nfrom the town and offers drivers connections to Basildon, Romford and other\nmajor roads and motorways such as the M25, A12 and A130. The A13 between\nTilbury and London Docklands is also nearby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is an extensive bus network locally too,\nwith services<\/a> running\nthroughout the town and wider borough and further afield. This includes the\nNo.3 to Chelmsford, the 25 to Basildon and the X30 to Stansted Airport.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

London Southend Airport<\/a> is less than 2 miles to the\nnorth of Southend-on-Sea and offers a range of international and domestic\nflight options plus its own train station with services to London Liverpool\nStreet in only 45 minutes. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools and education <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Southend-on-Sea offers a good choice of\nprimary and secondary school settings within its catchment area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are at least 35 primary school settings\nin and around Southend-on-Sea, the majority of which have been rated \u2018outstanding\u2019\nor \u2018good\u2019 by Ofsted. This includes local options St Mary’s CofE Primary School,\nBournes Green Infant and Junior Schools, Porters Grange Primary School and\nNursery and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For bigger kids moving onto the next stage of\ntheir educational journey, there are currently 21 secondary school and college settings\nwithin 3 miles of Southend-on-Sea. Local options Southend High School for Boys and\nSouthend High School for Girls have both been rated as \u2018outstanding\u2019 by Ofsted.\nSutton House Academy all through school and St Nicholas School for ages 11-16\noffer SEND (special educational needs & disabilities) education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to further and higher education,\nSouth Essex College<\/a> has\nfour modern campuses within the county, one of which is located in Southend-on-Sea\nitself. Every campus offers an exciting choice of academic courses, vocational\noptions, and modern apprenticeships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s not forget the youngest members of the\nfamily either. Southend-on-Sea is also home to a range of playgroups,\nclasses<\/a> and day\nnurseries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Whilst the town is well known for its impressive beaches, the\npopular Southend Pier and Railway, the Southend Cliff Railway, Adventure Island<\/a> and the Sea Life Adventure Aquarium<\/a> there is\nmore to Southend-on-Sea than it\u2019s seaside attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not content with well stocked retail centres the Victoria Shopping Centre<\/a> and The Royals<\/a>, Southend is also due to\nreceive a new \u00a350 million retail and leisure complex, The Seaway<\/a>, which\ncomes complete with a cinema, numerous restaurants, leisure facilities and\nhotel. Nearby Westcliff-on-Sea has also long been known as a retail hotspot. Indeed, Hamlet Court\nRoad was once referred to as the \u201cBond Street of Essex\u201d during the 19th<\/sup>\nCentury thanks to its impressive selection of independent retailers. Leigh\nBroadway and\nLeigh Road in Leigh-on-Sea are also teeming with plenty of one-off\nindependents, retro stores and bookshops selling everything from clothing to\nhousewares, antiques, and beyond which will keep even the keenest shopper\ninterested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking to get active, the nearby Southend Leisure &\nTennis Centre<\/a> offers top-quality athletics and ball sports facilities, a\nfully-equipped gym, a 25 metre swimming pool, and access to a range of exercise\nclasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outdoor enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that Southend is home\nto plenty of parks and recreation\nareas<\/a> too including Southchurch Park, Southend Cliff Gardens, 19th<\/sup>\nCentury Prittlewell Square, Priory Park, Victory Sports Grounds and Chalkwell\nPark to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great food is also on the menu, with Monti Italian Restaurant<\/a>, Mexican Pieno Lleno<\/a> and family friendly Lemon Witch<\/a> with its tempting crepes, pancakes\nand must try \u2018freakshakes\u2019 that are popular with locals and visitors alike. And\nit wouldn\u2019t be the seaside without fish and chips and an ice cream \u2013\naward-winning Bailey\u2019s<\/a> and\nlong-time Southend residents Rossi Ice Cream Parlour<\/a> are both a\nmust visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lively town is home to festivals, fetes and community events a\nplenty. Motor enthusiasts should check out the London to Southend Classic Car Run,\nthe Southend Shakedown and the Great London Rideout. The Southend\nCarnival \u2013 a yearly extravaganza since 1906 \u2013 the Southend-on-Sea Film\nFestival, the Southend Arts Festival and the Village Green Art & Music\nFestival in Chalkwell Park are also worth a look. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culture vultures will enjoy learning more about the local\nheritage at the town\u2019s various museums<\/a> (including\nan impressive Saxon treasure trove at the Southend Central Museum) and galleries<\/a> like the\nFocal Point Gallery, Beecroft Art Gallery and the TOMA project space showcase\nan exciting range of exhibitions and art shows. There is also plenty of live\nentertainment available year-round at theatres the Cliffs Pavilion and the\nPalace Theatre and an 8-screen Odeon Multi-Plex showing all the latest\nreleases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime and safety <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The multi-agency Southend Community\nSafety Partnership<\/a> includes the local council, Essex Police, Essex County Fire &\nRescue Service, and the National Probation and Health Services who work\ntogether with the local community to tackle any anti-social behaviour and\nreduce and prevent crime. There are also a number of local Neighbourhood Watch\nSchemes<\/a> operating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
