Godalming is so quintessentially English\nthat it\u2019s a great place for celebrity spotting. For movie makers in search of a\ntimeless location, Godalming ticks all the boxes. It\u2019s been a while since the\nubiquitous Tom Cruise<\/a> revved around the area, though the word\nis that David Tennant\n<\/a>has taken up the\nchallenge to create a few cinematic thrills and chills in the town. Who knew?\nWell, certainly the local press, who are ever quick to point out that whatever\nthe genre, Surrey is a haven for movie makers.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has been a settlement in Godalming\nsince Saxon times<\/a> and the town currently has a population\nof around 22,000 people. It\u2019s nestled in the Metropolitan Green Belt and is an\nattractive location for commuters, which has led to some intense discussions\naround land use.<\/a> Nonetheless, Godalming succeeds in retaining\nits countryside feel yet has always been ahead of the game when it comes to\nprogress. Impressively, it was the first place in the world to make electricity\npublicly available to its citizens and has also been prompt in providing other public services.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local house prices reflect the town\u2019s\nattractiveness to prospective homebuyers. However, it is still possible to find\na one-bedroom terraced house for \u00a3250,000. Detached houses are available from\n\u00a3450,000, averaging \u00a3868,610. The average house price overall is \u00a3574,050 which\nhas gone up substantially in the last year but has now levelled off somewhat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links<\/strong>
<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Godalming Station <\/a>is operated by South Western Trains (the\nunofficial name is the Portsmouth Direct Line) and offers excellent links\nbetween London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour. It\u2019s also a Grade II listed\nbuilding that has (are you surprised?) been used as a location for various\nmovies as well as winning many awards in its own right. In fact Godalming has\ntwo stations, the second being Farncombe.<\/a> Godalming is equidistant from both\nHeathrow and Gatwick at 30 miles either way. The town is also not far from the A3\nwhich links to the M25 and thus to the rest of Britain\u2019s motorway network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Independent school education from\npre-prep to sixth form, for day students and boarders, is second to none in\nGodalming. The best-known of Godalming\u2019s independent schools is surely the venerable\nCharterhouse<\/a>,\noriginally founded in London in 1611. Today the school offers boarding\nfacilities to students aged 13-18 on its 250-acre campus in Godalming. As well\nas beautiful architecture, Charterhouse has outstanding sporting facilities\nincluding 24 tennis courts and a 9-hole golf course. Beginning as a boys\u2019\nschool and having adopted a co-ed sixth form before many other independents,\nCharterhouse became a full co-ed school in September 2021<\/a> for both day students and boarders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from Charterhouse, there are\nseveral other well-regarded independents such as Aldro\nSchool<\/a>, Barrow\nHills<\/a>, King\nEdward’s Witley<\/a>, and Prior’s\nField<\/a> in the area. State\nschool provision is good too, with local comprehensive schools such as Broadwater\nSchool<\/a> gaining a \u2018good\u2019\nOfsted rating. There is excellent provision of school clubs, after-school clubs\nand Koosa Clubs<\/a> such as that at St Edmund\u2019s Primary\nSchool. Godalming College<\/a>\nprovides sixth form studies and is recognised for the excellence of its\neducation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Godalming\u2019s architecture developed as a\nresult of its importance in the days of coaching, and subsequently the\nrailways. It\u2019s a charming town to simply explore <\/a>for its own sake, enjoying quirky\narchitectural delights such as The Pepperpot<\/a>,\nas the former town hall is affectionately known, on the way. Godalming may be a\nrelatively small town, but its range of independent retailers offers a choice\nthat is second to none.<\/a> After exploring the town and its shops,\nand perhaps a trip to the local museum<\/a>, there are tasty lunches waiting at the\nInn on the Lake<\/a> or one\nof Godalming\u2019s other appealing venues such as the C\u00f4te Brasserie<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Godalming\u2019s state-of-the-art leisure centre<\/a> offers fitness classes, swimming, and\nmore. There are also several theatre groups, including the lively Godalming\nTheatre Group<\/a>, a\ncommunity group which packs a punch with its pantos, plays, and musicals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Apart from celebrity spotting, there\u2019s\nno shortage of (often quirky!) things to do in and around Godalming. It\u2019s clear\nthat the locals work hard to show there\u2019s more to Godalming than being the\nquintessential English home counties town. Good access to the lovely Surrey\nHills<\/a>, with\nopportunities for exercise, rest and relaxation, is great of course, but it\u2019s\neven better if you trek with llamas<\/a>, pick\nyour own fruit<\/a> on a\nlocal farm or be spooked out during their Halloween\nPumpkin Week<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But why opt for just one night of\npumpkin-themed terror when you can enjoy a whole week of it? Visit one of the\nnumerous outstanding National Trust properties in the area such as Winkworth Arboretum<\/a> or The River Wey and Godalming Navigations<\/a> who have plenty of seasonal activities\nand events on offer. The River Wey is also the location for an atmospheric river festival<\/a> each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foodies love the annual Godalming Food Festival<\/a> with its selection of regional\nspecialities and the local distillery\n<\/a>revives the old Wessex\nspirit, literally. There\u2019s no shortage of lovely venues such as Loseley\nPark<\/a> offering\nhospitality and events, as well as being great places to celebrate. You might\neven spot the occasional celeb as Loseley Park has been the location for films\nas diverse as The Crown, Marple, Emma, Sense and Sensibility and The Worst Witch<\/a>! \nGodalming Cinema<\/a> fans probably enjoy spotting the\nvarious familiar locations as they munch popcorn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety & Crime<\/strong>  <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While not entirely crime-free, Godalming\nis widely recognised as a place with an excellent quality of life, outstanding\nschools, and plenty of cultural and sporting activities. Crime in the town has\nremained more or less at a level throughout the pandemic, and Surrey Police has\nestablished a dedicated team for Ockford Ridge, Aarons Hill,\nBusbridge & Godalming Town Centre<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
