This unusual island, consisting of an\nexisting Essex parish that was increased by land reclamation in the twentieth\ncentury, has been occupied since the days of the Romans<\/a>. Joined to Essex, but with its own\ndistinctive Islander outlook on life, Canvey Island is home to just over 38,000\npeople and one of its main claims to fame is as the hometown of two of\nBritain\u2019s most iconic RnB bands, Dr Feelgood<\/a>, and Eddie\nand the Hotrods<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canvey is often overlooked by home\nhunters in favour of prettier rural or suburban locations, who therefore miss\nout on its unique agricultural and industrial history, its location, and its genuine\ncommunity strengths. Indeed, there\u2019s an authenticity about Canvey Island that is\nworth experiencing and joining. It is home to traditional British delights such\nas a fun fair<\/a>,\namusement arcades, fish and chips<\/a>, and walks along the waterfront\nwatching the sun set. Most importantly, the locals are fond of their island and\nare aware of its appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canvey Island\u2019s housing is an eclectic\nmix that encompasses terraced houses, traditional seaside villas and hotels,\nand park homes. House prices range from a very reasonable \u00a3150,000 for a\none-bedroom flat to \u00a3180,000 for a two-bedroom park home for the over-65s, and\n\u00a3235,000 for a three-bedroom home in an area close to schools and good\ntransport links. Transport links<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s true to say that road transport on\nCanvey Island can be something of an issue<\/a> for locals. However, Canvey Island has\na decent rail connection via Benfleet Station<\/a> on the London, Tilbury and Southend line.<\/a> Community group Canvey Island Towns and\nVillages, knowing how confusing transport to and from the island can be (even\nfor locals!), have put together a helpful guide to getting to and from Canvey.<\/a> The nearest airports are award-winning London\nSouthend<\/a>, just six\nmiles away, London Stansted<\/a>, and Gatwick.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The\nCornelius Vermuyden School <\/a>is\nan academy with a keen interest in maths and science subjects. It has an\ninteresting history, being named after a Dutch engineer<\/a> who originally came to Britain in the\nsixteenth century to help drain the fens. Canvey Island Infant School<\/a> is currently rated \u2018good\u2019 by Ofsted, as\nis St Katherine’s Church of England School<\/a> while St\nJoseph’s Catholic Primary School<\/a>\nhas an \u2018outstanding\u2019 rating.  For a\nrelatively small area, Canvey Island has excellent early years provision in\nterms of numbers of schools and other educational centres such as preschool and\nnursery settings, so no child should have too far to travel. Diversity and\nequality are also key themes for all the schools in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Images of Canvey Island often focus on\nthe oil\nrefinery<\/a> that has been\na feature of the landscape since the 1930s. While it may be an instantly\nrecognisable industrial site, and historic in its own way, there\u2019s much more to\nCanvey. West Canvey Marsh<\/a>, for one, is part of the globally\nimportant network of Essex marshes managed by the Royal Society for the\nProtection of Birds (RSPB). There\u2019s also the relatively new Canvey Heights Country Park<\/a> (height being a relative term on\nCanvey!). Canvey Island may be small, but it offers plenty of opportunities to\nget out there and enjoy the amazing sky, land and seascapes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local shopping is something of a contentious issue<\/a>, with some locals arguing that the\nshopping centre is past its sell-by date, while others argue that it simply\nneeds better support \u2013 from the locals! Others are simply happy with Canvey\u2019s\nunique landscapes and opportunities to get outside and walk <\/a>or watch the wildlife. History\nalso matters<\/a> to the\nIslanders and Canvey Island has its own yacht\nclub<\/a> too, offering\nopportunities to explore the Essex creeks and marshes that were once the haunts\nof smugglers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to eating out, it has to\nbe fish, or at least fish-themed, so try what\u2019s on offer at one of the many\npopular fish and chip bars<\/a>, or the Lobster Smack Pub<\/a>. Don\u2019t miss the listed Labworth\nCafe<\/a> either. It was\ndesigned by Ove Arup, who designed the Sydney Opera House, and built during\nCanvey Island\u2019s boom as a popular seaside resort for Londoners. In fact lots of\nCanvey’s architecture<\/a> has amazing stories to tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on?<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Canvey Island still retains a lot of its\nold seaside town atmosphere. In addition to its beaches and fairground rides to\nenjoy, there\u2019s a transport museum<\/a> with iconic British vehicles. Music and\nother events in nearby Southend, or London\u2019s East End are all very accessible\nfrom Canvey too. Canvey also has its own traditional carnival<\/a>, with pipe bands, floats, a Carnival King and Queen<\/a>, and tribute band awards and the\nproceeds raised go to charity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety & Crime<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Canvey Island is one of the top 5 safest\ntowns in Essex, although it is not immune to crime. Canvey Island\u2019s police unit\nactively engages with crime and offers specialist support. Essex Police provides\nnot only useful advice on what\u2019s happening, and where, and who to contact, but\nalso tips on how to identify potential crime and keep yourself safe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
