Speaking of Bodmin Moor, this is the home to wild ponies<\/a>, rare plants<\/a> and eery rock formations, as well as some of the oldest ritual and settlement sites<\/a> in Britain. The moor is also said to be home to an uncanny beast like a panther, and periodically film footage<\/a> emerges which claims proof of its existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bodmin\u2019s inland location has meant it\nhas been occasionally overlooked by those in search of Cornwall\u2019s coast and\nsurf. However, a decade ago, observers of the housing market were already noting\nthat the biggest beast in Bodmin was its house price boom.\n<\/a>Ten years on, and house\nprices have soared again during the pandemic<\/a> as buyers seeking improved quality of\nlife show renewed interest in rural areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n When it comes to housing, how does\nBodmin compare with the rest of Cornwall? <\/p>\n\n\n\n With a population of just over 14,000 and a history dating back to the 6th<\/sup> century, Bodmin is one of Cornwall\u2019s oldest towns. Its heritage is recognised in the local council conservation policy<\/a> for the town and new building has tended to be small-scale and discreet. Although increasing in popularity, house prices in Bodmin have not – yet – matched the overheated highs that are seen at other Cornish locations. While elsewhere in Cornwall the average price for a modest three-bedroom home can be an eye-watering \u00a3275,000, it is still possible to buy the same in Bodmin for under \u00a3230,000; but for how much longer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bodmin\u2019s central location means most of\nCornwall is very accessible, and the town has excellent links to the rest of\nthe UK. The A30 is Cornwall\u2019s major road route and a notoriously busy one,\nespecially in holiday season. The nearby A39 can also become congested. Thankfully,\nBodmin offers first-rate train services as an alternative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Travelling on the Great Western Railway<\/a> to Bodmin still has a romantic appeal\nthat brings out one\u2019s inner Sherlock Holmes, and there are regular trains to\nLondon Paddington and some direct trains to Newcastle-upon-Tyne from Bodmin\nParkway. The Bodmin and Wenford Railway<\/a> also runs traditional steam and diesel\ntrains taking in some of the most picturesque local village railway stations\nfrom which you can cycle and walk in rural bliss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bodmin\u2019s nearest airport, Newquay, which\nprovides a range of national and international destinations<\/a>, is under half an hour\u2019s drive away. Cyclists,\nhorse riders and walkers will also enjoy the beautiful multi-user Camel Trail<\/a> through some of the loveliest\ncountryside in Cornwall. It\u2019s wheel-chair friendly, too, so all users need to\nbe aware of the Camel Trail code of conduct<\/a>. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Infant and junior school provision in and\naround Bodmin is largely rated \u201cgood\u201d by Ofsted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Schools with this rating include the Beacon Ace Academy <\/a>for 3 to 11 year olds, Berrycoombe School<\/a>, which also has provision for special\neducational needs, St Petroc’s C of E Primary<\/a> and \nSt Mary’s Catholic Primary<\/a>. Many of the surrounding villages also\nretain their friendly local schools such as Lanivet\nPrimary <\/a>and Nanstallon\nCommunity Primary<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Bodmin\nCollege <\/a> is a large school with extensive facilities for\n11\u201319-year-olds. The associated Greenfield Centre<\/a>\noffers provision for North Cornwall students with multiple and severe learning\ndifficulties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Senior students (aged 16-18) are well\nprovisioned by Callywith College<\/a> which has been rated \u201coutstanding\u201d by\nOfsted. Alternative educational provision is offered by North Cornwall Academy<\/a>, rated \u201cgood\u201d by Ofsted. Bodmin\u2019s\ncentral location provides good access to the University\nof Exeter<\/a>, which\nretains its regional strengths while now ranking in the top 150 universities globally.<\/a> There are no fewer than 24 trains a day<\/a> from Bodmin to Exeter St. David\u2019s, and\nprices can be very reasonable depending on time of travel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Shopping<\/a> is just one of the aspects of Bodmin\nthat has seen improvement in recent years. The town offers a good selection of\nsmall, local retailers and larger high street outlets such as W.H. Smith and\nB&M. There is also a good selection of local eateries and some of Bodmin\u2019s\ntown centre pubs, notably the White Hart Inn, date back to the sixteenth\ncentury. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The shadow of Cornwall\u2019s notorious\nwrecking and smuggling past hangs heavy over Bodmin. Perhaps that\u2019s why locals\nand visitors alike simply love going to jail. Bodmin\nJail<\/a>, that is, a\nvisitor attraction that delights in the dark side of the town\u2019s heritage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Boasting the UK\u2019s only working execution pit <\/a>as well as a gloomy naval wing where\nghostly sailors from the Georgian navy no doubt brood on their crimes, the new\nattraction has been salvaged from the derelict town jail. The chills, thrills\nand ghostly goings-on aren\u2019t confined to the jail, either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Indeed, Bodmin and its moor seem to be\nvying for the title of ghost walk capital of the UK, with more spooky shenanigans at Jamaica Inn<\/a>,\nwhich offers accommodation<\/a> in its historic inn rooms as well as a\nnewer wing. There\u2019s also a comprehensive daily menu <\/a>available at the inn. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a change from the sinister and\nsupernatural tales that abound in Bodmin and its surroundings, Bodmin Moor, the\nlargest area of designated outstanding natural beauty<\/a> in Cornwall, provides uplifting\nsanctuary. Whether striding across the moors or easy urban walks<\/a> are your thing, Bodmin comes up trumps every\ntime. And who knows \u2013 you may find the genuine sword of King Arthur at Dozmary\nPool, its legendary location, although it may turn out to be a film prop. <\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Beautiful houses and gardens such as\nNational Trust property Lanhydrock<\/a>\nare some of Bodmin\u2019s loveliest assets, and the facilities at Lanhydrock\nHotel and Golf Course<\/a>\nare a golfer\u2019s dream. <\/p>\n\n\n\n On July 2nd<\/sup> each year, the\ntown commemorates its foundation by Saint Petroc with the Bodmin Riding<\/a>. \nHorses, flowers, and a procession including relics of the venerable\nsaint all feature in this proudly local event, as does regional cooking, of\ncourse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Horse riding is one of the best ways to\nsee the surrounding countryside, so whether you want to channel your inner\nDemelza with a canter over the moors or just take a plod on a friendly cob<\/a> so you can admire the scenery, Bodmin\nis the place to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Wheal Tor Hotel on the edge of\nBodmin, Cornwall\u2019s highest hotel, keeps visitors up to date with a what’s\non listing,<\/a> as does the\ncouncil\u2019s own website.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n The moors also have much to offer,\nincluding stargazing at Siblyback Lake, part of the International Dark Sky\nLandscape network. An all-mobility buggy means that the location is accessible\nto all. As a county, Cornwall offers a wealth\nof traditional and modern festivals<\/a>\nand Bodmin\u2019s greatest appeal is that it is within easy reach of all of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n When the Sunday Times finally named\nBodmin Moor one of the best places to live<\/a> in Britain in 2018, the locals were frankly\nsurprised it had taken them so long. And now that weekly holiday rents<\/a> on the Cornish coast have shocked locals\nand visitors alike, heading for those inland towns surrounded by moors and\ncraggy tors makes better sense than ever. With just 17 crimes reported in May\n2021, Bodmin is actively served by the regional police, who provide visible\npatrols, active engagement with the community and even a newsletter.<\/a> Such active engagement produces not\nonly low levels of crime, but decreasing levels of some crimes too.
