As a growing settlement located at the\ncrossing of a river in the heart of prime stock-rearing country, Ivybridge offered\nan ideal location for the construction of mills. By the sixteenth century,\nthere were at least three, including a corn, a tin and an edge mill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although sometimes viewed as a commuter\ntown for Plymouth, Ivybridge retains its rural roots<\/a> and has a strong local identity, with\nthriving schools in the town and the surrounding villages. The architecture of\nthe town is primarily Victorian, including traditional terraced housing.\nExisting historic buildings such as Stowford Paper Mill<\/a> \u2013 which provided employment to the town\nfor over two centuries<\/a> until its closure in 2013 \u2013 have been\nadopted into the town\u2019s housing and development plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The arrival of the railway, and over a\ncentury later, the A38 Devon Expressway, have been influential on the\ndevelopment of Ivybridge, defining the growth of the town to north and south.\nThis, together with its proximity to Plymouth and easy access to beautiful\nrural areas like Dartmoor and the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural\nBeauty, has resulted in a competitive housing market. However, it is still possible\nto find a detached starter home for under \u00a3280,000, while ever-popular terraced\nhouses range from \u00a3210,000 for a mid-terrace to \u00a3345,000 for an end of terrace.\nTraditional and modern link detached houses are available from \u00a3250,000. Larger\ndetached properties on the edge of town and in the surrounding area start at\n\u00a3500,000. All of which offers a significant saving in comparison to nearby south\nwest hotspots Dittisham and Dartmouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ivybridge has been a key location since\nthe days of pack horses clattering over the town\u2019s famous humpbacked bridge. Today,\nIvybridge\u2019s train station<\/a> provides good local services to\nPlymouth (in around 13 minutes) and Exeter St Davids as well as several trains\nper day to Bristol Temple Meads. London Paddington can also be reached in less\nthan 4 hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The section of the A38<\/a> between Plymouth and Exeter which passes to the south of\nthe town is known as the Devon Expressway. The second longest road in the UK, The\nA38 travels from Bodmin to Mansfield, providing a major link between the south\nwest counties to the rest of the country. Exeter\nAirport<\/a>, consistently\nranked in the top five airports in the UK, is just 38 miles along the A38 by\ncar. There are also regular train and coach services<\/a>, with a dedicated local airport service\nprovided by Stagecoach, and regular services to London airports with National\nExpress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For a relatively small semi-rural town,\nIvybridge offers an exceptional choice of schools and other educational\nfacilities, particularly for its youngest residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n There are three* local Montessori Little Orchard Nurseries<\/a> (Woodlands, Lee Mill and Ivy Town). At Millswood\nNursery<\/a> (rated\noutstanding by Ofsted), children are encouraged to make the most of their\nbeautiful local surroundings with plenty of outdoor activities including\ngardening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The emphasis of all the local primary\nschools is on inclusivity, friendliness, and a welcoming learning environment.\nThe Manor Primary School (rated outstanding by Ofsted) is a member of The Beacon Federation<\/a>, as are Ermington and Ugborough Primary\nSchools in villages near Ivybridge. Woodlands\nPark Primary School<\/a> is also\nrated outstanding by Ofsted, and Stowford\nSchool<\/a>, offering\nnursery facilities through to Year 6, has an Ofsted rating of good. Erme Primary School<\/a>, situated on the banks of the Erme in the heart of\nIvybridge, encourages outdoor learning experiences and is currently rated good\nby Ofsted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For students aged 11\u201318, Ivybridge\nCommunity College<\/a> received a good\nrating in its most recent Ofsted report (2020). The Community College has a\nlarge catchment area that extends to the coast as well as the surrounding\ncountryside villages. Ivybridge also offers excellent access to Plymouth and\nExeter for further and higher education, with Exeter\nUniversity<\/a> under an hour away by train and the University of Plymouth<\/a> and other colleges even closer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Ivybridge\u2019s hilly nature, set within\noutstanding Devon countryside on the edge of Dartmoor, makes it an ideal\nlocation for keen walkers. Local landmark The Western Beacon<\/a> is a popular destination for the views\nalone, while Longtimber Woods<\/a> offer a good stroll along the banks of\nthe river. Guided walks are available for individuals and groups throughout the\nyear and at the Dartmoor Walking Festival<\/a> in August \u2013 September. Serious walkers tackle the Two\nMoors Way<\/a> or the beautiful 630 miles of the South\nWest Coast Path<\/a>, 20 minutes\u2019 drive from Ivybridge. In fact,\nIvybridge\u2019s proximity to outstanding beaches as well as beautiful countryside is\none of its greatest charms. Cyclists too are well catered for, with easy routes\nsuch as the Drakes Trail<\/a> cycle route, to the more challenging\nsuch as the Dartmoor Way Cycle Route<\/a>. Bikes, including electric bikes, are\navailable to hire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n There are plenty of other ways to\nexercise too, including a round of golf at Wrangaton\nGolf Club<\/a> or Ivybridge\nGolf Club<\/a>, a game of\ntennis at South Devon Tennis Centre<\/a>, or a workout and swim at the Fusion Leisure Centre<\/a>. Keen riders can enjoy the beautiful\ncountryside on horseback at Fitzworthy\nEquestrian Centre<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Experience in catering for hungry\nwalkers and cyclists means that there\u2019s plenty of cafes and take-aways in the\ntown, from bakers to chip shops and restaurants offering international cuisine,\nwith locally produced food a key theme. Most of these eateries can be found in\nFore Street, Ivybridge\u2019s main shopping street, while others are located in the Glanvilles\nMill<\/a> shopping precinct. There\u2019s a local brewery there too, the Ivybridge\nBrewing Company<\/a>. The\nvillage-like nature of the town is revealed in its friendly local retailers,\nincluding gift shops, a bookstore, gallery and more, all of which can be\naccessed via a helpful interactive map<\/a> for more information. Brochures and route\nmaps are available from The\nWatermark Centre. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n More to the point, what isn\u2019t <\/em>on\nin Ivybridge and the surrounding areas? Lukesland\nGardens<\/a> and Victorian Gothic house have an interesting\nhistory that dates back to medieval times and the delightful Benedictine\nAbbey at Buckfast<\/a> offers\naccommodation, a restaurant, shops and beautiful grounds in which to\ncontemplate. Animal lovers will be enthralled by the range of rare species\ncared for at Dartmoor Zoo<\/a>, the South\nDevon Railway<\/a> <\/strong>takes travellers back to the great days\nof steam and families love the activities on offer at Pennywell\nFarm<\/a>. All these\nattractions are less than 20 minutes\u2019 drive from Ivybridge, as are the Dartmoor\nNational Park<\/a>\nand River\nDart Country Park<\/a>. In\nIvybridge itself, films, comedy events and plays are the forte of the popular Watermark\nCentre Cinema<\/a>. It\u2019s no\nwonder that the town often receives the epithets \u201cbustling and lively\u201d. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The town\u2019s engaged and easy to contact community police patrol<\/a> always deals promptly with occasional anti-social\nbehaviour, criminal damage, and littering, which has tended to focus on the\nWatermark Centre and Victoria Park.
