Portsmouth\nis an island city on the south coast of England with a population of just over\n200,000 people. Encompassing Portsea Island and the mainland areas of Cosham,\nPort Solent, Wymering, Drayton and Farlington, Portsmouth has a strong maritime\nhistory and is perhaps most famous as one of the UK\u2019s three Royal Naval\noperations bases<\/a>. The\ncity is also well served by rail, road and sea connections that make it a\npopular place to live for those interested in European travel as well as those\nlooking for a base to commute into London and across the South East. Oh, and\nthe broadband speeds are also some of the fastest in the UK here, with 99%\nmobile phone coverage to boot, making those working from home days much more\nefficient!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portsmouth\nalso offers a wide range of schools, excellent leisure facilities and easy\naccess to the coastline and nearby Isle of Wight, plus green open space like\nthe New Forest and South Downs National Park. With competitive house prices to\nadd to the mix, Portsmouth is a popular proposition in the pricey South East.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed,\nproperties in Portsmouth had an average sold price of \u00a3263,843 over the last\nyear. This is on par with the national average and certainly more affordable\nthan both Hampshire (\u00a3386,147) and the South East region (\u00a3459,794) overall,\nparticularly pricey Hampshire hotspots Soberton (\u00a31,022,692), Droxford\n(\u00a3980,650) and Hambledon (\u00a3731,667). Sought after locations in and around\nPortsmouth include Southsea, Old Portsmouth, family friendly Baffins and Milton\nplus picturesque Eastney to the south east of Portsea Island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport\nLinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The\ncity is well served by rail links with London to the north-east, and Southampton,\nBristol, and Cardiff to the west. The journey time to London by train is one\nhour and forty-five minutes and the journey into Southampton takes just half an\nhour, with regular services running between the two cities three times every\nhour. Portsmouth\nand Southsea Station<\/a> is Portsmouth\u2019s main train station, with the city\nalso benefitting from stations in Hilsea<\/a> (for\nthe Anchorage Park Industrial Estate), Fratton<\/a> and Portsmouth\nHarbour<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncity is conveniently located near the M275, and this allows for easy access to\nthe M27 and A3(M) and Portsmouth also benefits from a wide-ranging bus network<\/a> throughout\nthe city, its suburbs and nearby towns and cities. There are also a number of\nlong distance National Express coach services to destinations such as London,\nBristol, Cornwall, Bradford, and Birkenhead. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regular\nferry services run out of Portsmouth throughout the year and the route running\nbetween Portsmouth\nInternational Port and<\/a> the Isle of\nWight is served by both traditional car ferries and a hovercraft passenger service.\nThere are also links to Caen, Cherbourg and St. Malo via Brittany and Condor\nFerries making it easy to access mainland Europe for both work and pleasure\npurposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closest airport is Southampton Airport<\/a> (in\nEastleigh) offering a range of domestic and international flight options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School\nand education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There\nis plenty of choice when it comes to selecting a primary school in Portsmouth.\nOne of the best schools in the area is St. Swithun\u2019s\nCatholic Primary School<\/a>. The school offers education to children aged 3-11\nand is rated \u2018Good\u2019 by Ofsted. St. Jude\u2019s CofE\nSchool<\/a> is also popular and places much emphasis on outside\neducation and nurturing children to aim for excellence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nyoung people of secondary school age, popular local options include The Portsmouth\nAcademy<\/a>, Admiral\nLord Nelson School<\/a> and combined primary and secondary school the Mayfield School<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to independent options, Portsmouth Grammar School<\/a> is an all\nthrough school that educates boys and girls aged 2-18 and girls school Portsmouth High School<\/a>, the\nMayville High\nSchool<\/a> and Catholic boarding school St John’s College<\/a> are\nother popular choices locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those\nlooking to engage in further or higher education can find opportunities at the University of Portsmouth<\/a>. There are\nundergraduate degrees on offer as well as a range of community learning\nopportunities in the form of short courses, classes and lectures and the\nuniversity also scores very highly for student satisfaction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure\nand amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Portsmouth\nis home to all the retail essentials including the plentiful Cascades<\/a> shopping centre and the Gunwharf Quays<\/a> designer\noutlet and leisure complex plus a host of independent retailers on the Port\nSolent Boardwalk, in Southsea and at the Hotwalls Studios<\/a> in Old\nPortsmouth. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nare also a range of leisure facilities on offer locally. Mountbatten\nLeisure Centre<\/a> is a premier sports centre that has a swimming pool,\nclimbing centre and soft play area. The centre has undergone extensive\nrefurbishment in recent years, and this has resulted in the development of a\ntop-class, modern range of facilities. Portsmouth\nTennis Centre<\/a> is also a key facility in the region, and many\nresidents enjoy lessons at the centre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Historic Dockyard area<\/a> celebrates\nthe city\u2019s illustrious maritime history and there is much to see and do in the\narea. HMS Warrior and HMS Victory (Nelson\u2019s ship during the Battle of\nTrafalgar) are on display and can be visited and enjoyed by all of the family.\nThere is also an extensive museum that celebrates the local area and its\nmaritime connections and Spinnaker\nTower<\/a> provides stunning views of the city and beyond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\nyou would expect from a city connected so deeply to the sea, seafood is popular\nin the city. One of the city\u2019s top-rated restaurants \u2013 The Rocka\nRestaurant<\/a> \u2013 is famous for its seafood dishes, as is The Fisherman\u2019s\nKitchen<\/a> and Loch\nFyne Seafood & Grill Restaurant<\/a>. For more\nland-based cuisine, Brewhouse &\nKitchen<\/a>, Latin American Maya<\/a> and Restaurant 27<\/a> are also\npopular options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s\non<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The\ncity has a lively and diverse community, and this means that there are plenty\nof clubs and events to get involved in. Local theatre groups put on family fun\ndays for all to enjoy and We\nShine Portsmouth<\/a> is a show celebrating local artwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award-winning\nThe Groundlings Theatre<\/a>, New Theatre Royal<\/a>, Portsmouth\nCathedral<\/a> and The Guildhall<\/a>\noffer an exciting programme of live entertainment and events and the city\u2019s Victorious Festival<\/a> is\npopular with music lovers of all ages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portsmouth\nalso has something for the sports fans, with an impressive number of watersports<\/a> on\noffer and the local side Portsmouth\n(\u201cPompey\u201d) F.C.\u2019s<\/a> Fratton Park stadium a must visit for home games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime\nand safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Like\nall cities, Portsmouth does experience crime from time to time. Rates of crime\nin the city are lowering and the local police<\/a> work\nclosely with the multi-agency Safer Portsmouth Partnership<\/a> to reducing\ncrime and antisocial behaviour, making the city a safe place to live, visit and\nwork. The University of Portsmouth also has a strong focus on the health,\nwellbeing and safety<\/a> of its students both on campus and within the local\ncommunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
