Situated on the Scottish coast 15 miles south\nof Aberdeen, Stonehaven is a picturesque harbour town with a rich fishing\nheritage and bustling local community. It has become a well-known tourist spot\nthanks to attractions such as Dunnottar Castle<\/a>, an\nOlympic sized open air swimming pool<\/a> and its yearly Hogmanay\nfestivities<\/a>, but residents of the town also benefit from good local\nschools and a wealth of great amenities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With nearby Aberdeen being just a 20-minute\ntrain journey or 30-minute car ride away, commuters can enjoy the small-town\natmosphere and beautiful scenery of Stonehaven whilst working in the city. Much\nmore than just a picture-perfect tourist spot, this small town has much to\noffer for homeowners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The desirability of Stonehaven\u2019s seaside\nlocation is reflected in the average house price, which came in at \u00a3240,801<\/a> over the last year. Whilst not the\ncheapest part of Aberdeenshire, house prices in Stonehaven are on par with the\ncounty overall and significantly more affordable than pricey Aboyne (\u00a3333,689)\nand Banchory (\u00a3292,117).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stonehaven has good transport links and has\nits own train station<\/a> which is conveniently located\nwithin the town centre. Aberdeen is just 20 minutes away and Edinburgh can be\nreached via a direct train service in 2 hours and 15 minutes. For those wishing\nto travel within the town itself, the land\ntrain<\/a> is a novel way to reach the harbour, swimming pool and castle\nand is always a big hit with the kids!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nearby A90 bypass means the town is easily\naccessible by car whilst keeping busy traffic out of the centre, and with Aberdeen\nAirport<\/a> a 30-minute drive away, overseas travel is convenient too. A\nreliable and well used bus service<\/a> runs in the local area, with the scenic\nseaside route of the X7 Coastrider<\/a> proving particularly popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools\nand Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Children of all ages are well catered for in\nStonehaven, with a wide selection of schools on offer from nursery to higher\neducation. For preschoolers, there\u2019s the well regarded Croft Nurseries<\/a>\nand the Simpson\nPlayhouse<\/a> and local primary schools have also performed well at the\nmost recent Education Scotland inspection. These include Dunnottar\nPrimary<\/a>, Arduthie Primary School<\/a> and Mill\nO\u2019 Forest Primary School<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For secondary school aged students Stonehaven\nalso has plenty of options. There\u2019s the ever popular Mackie\nAcademy<\/a>, as well as the Mearns\nAcademy<\/a> and the Ellon Academy.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a local SEN school, Carronhill\nSchool<\/a>, which provides education for pupils aged between 5 and 18.\nThe school fosters an inclusive environment and provides children with the\nadditional support they need to achieve their best. Leisure\nand Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Residents of Stonehaven enjoy access to\nnumerous amenities and leisure facilities, all within easy reach of the town.\nThere\u2019s the weekly farmer\u2019s market<\/a> which prides itself on\nstocking the freshest and most local produce, as well as many independent shops<\/a> in the town centre selling\nhomewares, gifts, specialty foods and clothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more outdoorsy types there\u2019s an Olympic\nsized open air swimming pool<\/a> which is open from May to September\nand is filled with cleaned, natural sea water. There\u2019s also the nearby RSPB Fowlsheugh Reserve<\/a> where the stunning\ncliffs house countless seabirds including guillemots, puffins, and razorbills.\nEagle-eyed nature lovers can also spot grey seals and dolphins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a working harbour town Stonehaven is home\nto numerous picturesque coastal walks and paths<\/a>, as well as a yacht club<\/a>\nand sea\nangling facilities<\/a>. The beaches<\/a> attract thousands of visitors each\nyear and nearby Castle Dunnottar<\/a> is a great day out for all\nthe family to learn a bit more about the area\u2019s heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food and drink enthusiasts will be pleased to\nknow that Stonehaven has numerous great cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Aunt Betty\u2019s ice\ncream parlour<\/a>, The Bay Fish and Chips<\/a> and The\nTolbooth Seafood Restaurant<\/a> all come highly recommended, with pubs\nlike Market Bar<\/a>, The Ship\nInn<\/a> and The Trouper\u2019s Bar<\/a> also popular with locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s\nOn<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Stonehaven is well known for its busy social\ncalendar, with a whole range of events and festivals for all ages. Perhaps the\nbest known one is on the very first night of the year, when the town puts on its\nannual Hogmanay\ncelebrations<\/a>. There\u2019s a whole night of fireworks, revelry and even\nflaming fireballs being paraded through the streets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the summer Stonehaven hosts a\nseries of traditional events including the Feein\u2019 Market<\/a>\nwhich sees music, dance and entertainment come to the Market Square with the\nregular Farmer\u2019s Market<\/a> also setting up stall. The Folk Festival<\/a> and the Highland\nGames<\/a> are also firm favourites with locals, who embrace the history\nof the area and celebrate their rich heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History buffs will be pleased to know there\u2019s\nalso a permanent exhibition at the St James Episcopal Church called Priests and Pipes<\/a>. Visitors can explore the\nhistory of local churches and religion in the area as well as learning about\nthe building\u2019s architecture and organ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those looking for something a little livelier,\nthe yearly Midsummer Beer Happening<\/a> is a popular beer\nfestival which showcases over 140 different brews, many from brewers across\nEurope, America, and the UK. June also sees the RW Thomson Annual Memorial Rally<\/a> take place to\ncelebrate the inventor of the pneumatic tyre as visitors admire thousands of\nvintage cars and automobiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime\nand Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As part of Aberdeenshire South, Stonehaven\nbenefits from several local policing policies and projects in the area to\nimprove the safety of the community. There is a dedicated Local Area Commander<\/a>, as well as Community\nPolicing Teams and a Local Policing Plan <\/a>which covers 2020-2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also several Neighbourhood Watch<\/a> schemes in the local area\nas the close-knit community look out for each other and remain vigilant against\npetty crime and anti-social behaviour.
