Set in the beautiful countryside on the River\nClyde in the central belt of Scotland, Lanarkshire\u2019s former county town, Lanark,\nis a historic market town which has played an important role in the history of\nScotland. The town was once the home of William \u2018Braveheart\u2019 Wallace<\/a> and was the site of the first\nmeeting of the Scots Parliament<\/a> back in 978AD. Lanark\u2019s\nagricultural past is reflected in the\nlivestock markets<\/a> which are still held each Monday, and in recent\nyears the town has become popular with commuters to Glasgow 23 miles away and the\nScottish capital Edinburgh which is 30 miles from Lanark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the average house price coming in at an\naffordable \u00a3183,266<\/a> in the past year, it\u2019s no surprise\nthat more and more people are choosing to move to this attractive, well located\nmarket town. Perfect for outdoorsy types<\/a> as well as history\nbuffs<\/a> and those looking for the close knit atmosphere of a small\ntown, Lanark is quickly becoming a hugely desirable location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the most appealing things about Lanark\nis its excellent transport links. The town has its own train station<\/a> with frequent local services as\nwell as direct links to Glasgow (just 50 minutes away) and Edinburgh in under 2\nhours. This makes the town popular with commuters who use the town as a quiet retreat\nwhilst working in the busy city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Close proximity to Glasgow and Edinburgh also\nmeans access to three airports, Glasgow Prestwick<\/a>, Glasgow\nInternational<\/a> and Edinburgh<\/a>, making international travel easy\nfrom Lanark. For those travelling by car, Lanark is conveniently located not\nfar from the M8 and the M74, as well as the A702 and A721. There are several car parks<\/a> in the town which are run by the\nSouth Lanarkshire Council and make Lanark very car friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools\nand Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Parents of school aged children will be\npleased to know there are a wide selection of high performing primary and secondary\nschools in and around Lanark. Lanark Primary School<\/a> was rated as \u2018good\u2019 at\nthe last Education Scotland inspection, as was Braehead Primary School<\/a>, Blackwood\nPrimary School <\/a>and Rigside Primary School<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For secondary school pupils there is the local\nLesmahagow\nHigh School<\/a> and for those willing to travel further afield there\u2019s Biggar\nHigh School<\/a> and the well regarded Strathaven\nAcademy<\/a>. There are also two grammar school options, Lanark\nGrammar School<\/a> and Hamilton Grammar School<\/a> which both achieve\nexcellent academic results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanmore House School<\/a> is an SEN education\ncentre, offering both day places and residential care for those with extra\nsupport needs. It has built up a good reputation and provides education for\nchildren aged between 5 and 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a good range of baby, toddler\nand preschool groups,\nclubs and classes<\/a> in the local area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure\nand Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to its location in the stunning\nScottish countryside, Lanark is a haven for sports fans and nature lovers. It\nhas a huge range of activities and amenities close by, including an 18 hole golf course<\/a>\nwith views across the South Upland hills. The golf club is close to Lanark Loch<\/a>, another great local spot which\nplays host to a mini golf course, boating lake, play park and carp fishing\nfacilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s also the Scottish\nEquestrian Centre<\/a> located nearby, which offers pony trekking, horse\nriding lessons, riding holidays and more. Suitable for both adults and\nchildren, the centre boasts top class accommodation and more than 25 years of\nexperience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNESCO World Heritage site of New Lanark<\/a>\nis an 18th century mill village that has been painstakingly preserved and\nrestored. A day out here gives visitors a unique insight into the area\u2019s past,\nand they also host markets, exhibitions, activities and even weddings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If shopping and dining are more your thing,\nLanark also has a great range of independent shops and cafes located within the\ntown. There\u2019s Brooks\nShops<\/a>, a family owned and run department store selling menswear, womenswear,\nand shoes, as well as numerous butchers, bakers, delis, and farm shops which\ncelebrate the local area\u2019s freshest produce. Be sure to try the famous Lanark\nBlue from Errington\nCheese<\/a>! <\/p>\n\n\n

What\u2019s\non?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lanark is a busy town, with many long-standing\nvenues which host events throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lanark Museum<\/a> puts on annual exhibitions and\ninstallations about the history of the area and topics of local interest, while\nthe Lanark Memorial Hall<\/a> acts as the cultural\ncentre of the town. This Grade 2 listed building has recently undergone a \u00a35.3\nmillion refurbishment through the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and hosts\ncinema screenings, live shows, concerts, and arts events. Culture vultures will\nalso enjoy Lanark\u2019s Tolbooth Heritage and Arts Hub<\/a> which\ncan be hired for a huge range of events and hosts fundraisers and exhibitions\nthroughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the highlights of Lanark\u2019s year is Lanimer Day<\/a>,\nthe annual celebration of the town being granted the status of Royal Burgh by\nKing David I in 1140. Local children dress up and parade the streets with\nbagpipe bands and a Lanimer Queen who has been chosen from one of the local schools.\nThere\u2019s a whole week of events, ending with attractions, music, and\nentertainment for the whole family on Friday night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music is an important part of the town\u2019s\nfabric, with the Lanark and District Pipe Band<\/a> meeting\nregularly to rehearse, teach beginner classes and practice for their regular\nconcerts. There\u2019s also the ever growing Music in\nLanark<\/a> programme which was established in 2000 and has brought new\nand exciting musical programmes to the people of Clydesdale for over 20 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime\nand Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to recent police reports<\/a>, crime in the South Lanarkshire\narea has decreased by 23% when compared to average rates over the last five\nyears. This is partly due to Scotland\u2019s commitment to better policing, and also\ndue to the localised and dedicated approach which community teams have rolled\nout. There is a Local Police Plan<\/a> carried out by the\nLanarkshire division which shows a deep understanding and commitment to local\nneeds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lanark locals also look out for each other,\nwith a number of Neighbourhood Watch<\/a> schemes set up in the area\nto deter criminals and encourage a sense of community. Reassuringly for\nhomebuyers, USwitch found South Lanarkshire to be the 5th best place to live<\/a> in the UK in 2015,\nbased on a range of quality-of-life factors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
