Located on the River Clyde in the\nwestern Lowlands, Scotland\u2019s second city (although actually larger than the capital\nEdinburgh) has its roots in the shipbuilding trade and is famous for its\nimpressive 19th<\/sup> and 20th<\/sup> century Victorian and Art\nNouveau architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Glasgow is home to a vibrant arts\nscene, being named the UK\u2019s top cultural and creative city by the European\nCommission and one of the top 10 \u2018Best Cities in\nthe World\u2019 by Time Out Magazine in 2019 thanks to numerous museums, theatres\nand creative venues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The West End with its impressive\ntenements and red sandstone terraces is a popular spot for homebuyers and young\nfamilies flock to trendy Southside for the good schools on offer and its proximity\nto Pollok Country Park. Travel a little outside the centre to Milngavie and\nBearsden in the north for a more suburban feel, great schools and an impressive\ngolf course. Former industrial site Finnieston is full of stylish bars and\neateries and a mecca for craft beer and gin enthusiasts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glasgow was voted one of the world\u2019s\nfriendliest cities by Rough Guides in 2019 and took the number one spot in 2021<\/a>. It is a warm and welcoming city with a strong community\nvibe thanks to its friendly and outgoing natives, or \u2018Weegies\u201d, and its\ntransport links are also second to none. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Glasgow\nis extremely well connected\nto central Scotland and beyond via road, rail, subway and air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the most widespread rail\nnetwork of any UK city apart from London, Glasgow Central<\/a> train station is Scotland\u2019s busiest rail hub, with 8\ndifferent train lines on the Scotrail<\/a> network calling there and connections across the country and\ninto England to hubs such as Manchester, Birmingham and London. Glasgow Queen Street<\/a> station is on the Glasgow\u2013Edinburgh via Falkirk Line, the\nNorth Clyde Line, the West Highland Line and the Highland Main Line connecting\nGlasgow with destinations across Scotland such as Edinburgh, Dunblane,\nStirling, Aberdeen, Dundee, Oban and Helensburgh.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Glasgow Subway<\/a> is a handy, affordable\nway for traversing the city and West End, with peak time services every 4\nminutes and the entire route of 15 stations taking a total of 24 minutes to\ncomplete. Glasgow also has an extensive bus\nnetwork<\/a> serving both\nthe local suburbs of the Greater Glasgow conurbation and further afield. Cyclists\nand walkers are well catered for too, with the Nextbike<\/em><\/a> cycle hire scheme and\nthe Core Path Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\ndrivers, Glasgow offers easy connections to the Scottish road network, with the\nM8, M77, M74, M73 and M80 motorways all passing nearby. The A82 connects the\ncity with the western Highlands, the A9 north to Inverness and beyond and the\nM74 with Carlisle and the rest of England via the M6. When it comes to\ntravelling further afield, Glasgow Airport, Glasgow Prestwick Airport and\nEdinburgh Airport are 8 miles, 30 miles and 34 miles away respectively and can\nall be reached in 45 minutes or less. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools and education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When\nit comes to schools, Glasgow is home to a great range of nursery, primary,\nsecondary, independent and ASL (Additional Support for Learning) settings<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Primary schools\nSt Mungo’s Primary School & Nursery Class, Garnetbank Primary School, St\nPatrick’s Primary School and St Stephen’s Primary School are all highly rated.\nWhen it comes to secondary education, Jordanhill Secondary School, Notre Dame\nHigh School, Hillhead High School and Holyrood Secondary School are popular\nwith parents and children alike. There are also three specialist education settings\nfor those gifted in dance or sport or wishing to learn in Gaelic, one of\nScotland\u2019s native languages: The Dance School of Scotland, Glasgow School of\nSport and the Glasgow Gaelic School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Popular\nindependent schools in Glasgow include all through schools St Aloysius College,\nThe Glasgow Academy, Al Khalil College and Hutchesons\u2019 Grammar School, the oldest school in Scotland. St\nKevin’s Primary School, Broomlea Primary School and all through East Park\nSchool are well regarded special schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes\nto further and higher education, Glasgow also has a lively and diverse student\npopulation (one of the largest in the UK) studying at an impressive range of\ncolleges and universities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Glasgow\nSchool of Art, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, City of Glasgow College, Glasgow\nClyde College, Glasgow Kelvin College and West College Scotland offer a range\nof short, academic and apprenticeship courses covering a vast variety of\nsubjects. Glasgow is also home to the University of Glasgow<\/a>, Glasgow Caledonian University<\/a>, University\nof Strathclyde<\/a> and the University\nof the West of Scotland<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you would expect, Glasgow has an impressive range of retail and\nleisure opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to shopping, you are spoilt for choice in Glasgow,\nsaid to be home to over 1,500 shops from high street favourites to quirky independent retailers<\/a> and\nvintage treasure troves. Glasgow\u2019s Style Mile in the city centre which is\nlocated around Buchanan Street, Argyle Street and Merchant City plus the hip\nWest End are the places to go for a serious retail fix. For the essentials\nthere are supermarkets like Sainsburys, Waitrose, Tesco, Lidl and Asda and out\nof town shopping centres like the Robroyston Retail Park. <\/p>\n\n\n

For eating out, Glasgow certainly delivers. There is an impressively\ndiverse range of eateries including popular spots E Street Caf\u00e9<\/a>, Scran<\/a>, Green Gates Indian Restaurant<\/a>, Puti Vegan Caf\u00e9<\/a> and the Italian Kitchen<\/a>, plus street\nfood venue The Dockyard Social<\/a>. Foodies\nand night owls also head to Finnieston, smack bang between the West End and the city\ncentre of Glasgow, for a plethora of exciting eateries, vibrant social scene\nand nightlife. It isn\u2019t known as the \u201cShoreditch\nof Glasgow\u201d for nothing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also plenty of cosy and quirky pubs in the city including\nThe Belle<\/a>, The Laurieston<\/a> and The Sparkle Horse<\/a> and the Drygate\nBrewery<\/a> is an ‘experiential’ craft brewery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its urban setting, there is still plenty of green space<\/a> within\nGlasgow and on the doorstep with over 90 parks and gardens in the city itself. Glasgow\nGreen, the Glasgow Botanic Gardens and 146-hectare Pollok Country Park are particular highlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family friendly Glasgow also has plenty of activities for all ages<\/a> come rain\nor shine, including the Glasgow Science Centre<\/a>, the Glasgow Ski and Snowboard Centre<\/a> and\ntrampoline park Flip Out<\/a>. There are\nalso numerous leisure centres and\ngyms<\/a> across the city and the Good Move<\/a> initiative\nprovides support and advice for getting active at any age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A designated UNESCO City of Music, Glasgow is famed for its live\nmusic, events and clubbing scene and is considered one of Europe\u2019s top cultural\ncapitals. Highlights include annual events like the Riverside Festival<\/a>, Glasgow Jazz Festival<\/a>, the Wee Write<\/a> children\u2019s\nbook festival and visual art spectacular the Glasgow International Festival<\/a> to name\nbut a few. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city also plays host\nto the Scottish\nOpera<\/a> company, Scottish Ballet<\/a> and National Theatre of Scotland<\/a> alongside numerous museums<\/a>, music hotspots and a thriving nightlife<\/a> plus an incredible range of markets<\/a> every week from farmers markets to vintage fashion,\nantiques and homewares. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sports<\/a> enthusiasts are also well catered\nfor in Glasgow with football, rugby (union and league), ice hockey, swimming, basketball,\nrowing and golf all on tap. Indeed, the Commonwealth Games were even held in\nthe city in 2014 and Glasgow was co-host of the 2018 European Sports Championships.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime and safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Whilst the\nGlasgow of years gone by may not have had the most salubrious of reputations,\ntoday this friendly city is a safe place to live and regularly appears on best\nplaces to live and visit lists from the Sunday Times<\/a> to Lonely Planet.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like any UK\ntown or city, Glasgow is not immune to crime, but the area is well policed by\nthe Greater Glasgow\nDivision<\/a>\nof Police Scotland who work in partnership with Glasgow City Council<\/a>, other local agencies\nand the community via the Safer Glasgow<\/a> partnership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also\nnumerous neighbourhood watch schemes<\/a> across Glasgow which promote safety and engagement in the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
