Livingston is\nlocated in West Lothian, Scotland. A \u2018new town\u2019, Livingston was created in 1962\nas an amalgamation of nearby Livingston Village (hence the name) and a number\nof surrounding villages. It is now the largest town in the West Lothian area\nand the second largest (after Edinburgh) in the wider Edinburgh and Lothians\nregion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Livingston\u2019s\nlocation around 6 miles from Bathgate, 15 miles from Edinburgh and thirty miles\nfrom Glasgow with easy road and rail links makes it a popular commuter spot,\nalthough Livingston itself is home to a number of big employers locally such as\nSky. The town is also home to a great range of retailers, eateries, leisure and\neducation facilities to boot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Livingston\nis well connected to\ncentral Scotland and beyond via road, rail and air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\ndrivers, the city centres of both Edinburgh and Glasgow are less than 40\nminutes away on the M8 which connects Livingston with the rest of central\nScotland. The A71 between Edinburgh and North Lanarkshire runs to the south of\nthe town and the A899 connects Livingston with Broxburn. For travelling further afield, Edinburgh\nand Glasgow airports are only 16- and 44-minutes\u2019 drive, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nare three train stations locally. Livingston North<\/a>, Livingston South<\/a> and Uphall<\/a> to the east of the town. Livingstone North is on the North\nClyde Line between Edinburgh and Bathgate with Uphall station the next\neastbound station on the route and serving the eastern edges of Livingston and\nthe village of Uphall. Livington North has regular eastbound services to Bathgate\nin 5 minutes, Airdrie in 25 minutes, Glasgow Queen Street (where you can pick\nup eastbound connections as far as Helensburgh) in 44 minutes or westbound to\nEdinburgh Waverley in 21 minutes. Livingston South is located on the Shotts\nLine between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central with journey times to each\ncity of 28 and 54 minutes, respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Livingston\nalso has a comprehensive bus network<\/a> serving both local villages and larger\ntowns and cities via services like the 21 between Whitburn and Bathgate, the 40\nbetween Livingston St John’s Hospital and Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the 262\nto Dundee amongst many others. Cyclists and walkers are also catered for with\nan extensive Core Path Network.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools and education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When\nit comes to schools, Livingston is in the catchment area for a great range of nursery,\nprimary, secondary, independent and SEND settings<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the town\nthere are 17 primary schools and Bankton Primary School, St Ninian’s Primary\nSchool, Dedridge Primary School and Howden St Andrew’s Primary School are all highly\nrated. There are also 5 secondary schools in the district: Inveralmond\nCommunity High School, The James Young High School, St. Margaret’s RC Academy\nand Deans Community High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes\nto further and higher education, the West\nLothian College<\/a> offers\na range of short, academic and apprenticeship courses covering a variety of\nsubjects. Livingston is also an easy commute from universities in Edinburgh (The\nUniversity of Edinburgh<\/a>,\nEdinburgh\nNapier University<\/a> and Heriot\nWatt University<\/a>) and\nGlasgow (the University of Glasgow<\/a>, Glasgow Caledonian University<\/a> and the University\nof Strathclyde<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthe younger members of the family, there are plenty of baby and toddler groups and classes<\/a> and highly rated nurseries<\/a> available too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Whilst Edinburgh and Glasgow are but a short commute for a serious\nretail fix, Livingston itself is home to an impressive range of amenities and\nleisure activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to retail, Livingston has three large shopping\ncentres, a number of retail parks, and plenty of smaller independent retailers\ndotted around the town centre and beyond. The Centre<\/a> shopping centre is home to many\nhigh street favourites including Boots, Marks and Spencer, H&M, Primark and\nWH Smith, plus popular eateries Wagamama, Chiquito and Nando\u2019s to name but a\nfew. Livingston Designer\nOutlet<\/a>, the largest of its kind in Scotland, has over 70 designer and\nhigh street stores offering impressive discounts, tempting eateries, an\neight-screen cinema and Paradise Island\nAdventure Golf<\/a>. The Craigshill Shopping\nMall<\/a> was one of the first of its kind in the country and has a mix of\nhigh street and independent retailers on offer. Livingston is also home to a\nlarge Morrisons and Sainsburys plus Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, Homebase, Argos, a\nnumber of banks and a post office for all of the essentials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For eating out, Livingston also delivers. There is an impressive\nrange of eateries including the Now Now Caf\u00e9<\/a> and Artisan Cheesecake Caf\u00e9 and Bakery<\/a> plus the\naward-winning Terrace Restaurant<\/a> at the\nWest Lothian College cookery school, Bay Leaf Bar and Indian Restaurant<\/a> and La Campana<\/a> Italian restaurant. There are also\nplenty of cosy, historic pubs nearby including the award-winning Black Bull Inn<\/a> at Mid\nCalder and Livingston Village pub the Livingston Inn<\/a> which dates\nback to 1760 and is said to have inspired the song \u201cThe Bonnie Lass of Livingston\u201d\nby famous visitor Robert Burns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Livingston\u2019s position as a major centre of Scotland’s so-called\n\u201cSilicon Glen\u201d, the town is home to a surprising amount of green space with plenty\nof well-maintained parks and gardens<\/a>. Almondvale\nCountry Park, Almond Park, Gala Park, Lanthorn Park and Eliburns Park offer everything\nfrom friendly farm animals and heritage centre, play areas, sports facilities,\nskate parks and soft play to peaceful walking trails and scenic gardens. 913\nacre Beecraigs Country Park<\/a> is also\nonly 15 minutes away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family friendly Livingston also has plenty of activities for all\nages come rain or shine, including the Aerial Adventures<\/a> aerial\ncourses, soft play and caf\u00e9, Deer Park Ten Pin Bowling<\/a> and the\ngym, soft play, swimming pool and water slides of Xcite Livingston<\/a>, which\nalso offers monthly children\u2019s beach party events.<\/p>\n\n\n

Livingston hosts to a number of community events throughout the\nyear including the Beer and Cider Festival, the Soapbox Race and Santa\u2019s\nSleigh. And for the sweet-toothed, the Getting Gooey<\/a> chocolate crafting workshops are also\na must visit.    <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
