The county town of\nStaffordshire in the West Midlands is located equidistant from Stoke-on-Trent\nto the north and Wolverhampton to the South, both of which are around 15 miles\naway. Established in the Kingdom of Mercia in 700AD, Stafford became a key\nstronghold of \u00c6thelfl\u00e6d, Lady of the Mercians (of The Last Kingdom<\/a> fame!), who,\nunusually for the time, was the female ruler of the Kingdom of Mercia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Stafford is\na popular option with all types of homebuyers thanks to good transport links to\nBirmingham, Manchester and beyond, plenty of amenities, great schools, the\nstunning Staffordshire\nPeak District<\/a> on the doorstep and competitive house prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, the town had an average property price\nof \u00a3216,284 over the last 12 months. More affordable than the county of\nStaffordshire (\u00a3223,989) and the West Midlands region (\u00a3253,489) overall and\npricey Shenstone (\u00a3543,209), Lichfield (\u00a3315,696) <\/a>and\nStonnall (\u00a3306,841) in particular. Areas such as Rowley Park, Walton, Baswich\nand Wildwood are particularly sought after. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Stafford is easily\naccessible by road and rail and is well connected to other parts of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stafford<\/a>\ntrain station offers connections to Wolverhampton in 15 minutes and Birmingham New\nStreet in 30 minutes as well as other major hubs including Manchester, Liverpool,\nPreston, Worcester, Bristol, and London. Nearby Penkridge<\/a>\ntrain station to the south of the town is on the Birmingham branch of the West\nCoast Main Line and provides useful commuter services to Birmingham and Crewe\nin around 27 minutes and Liverpool in just over an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For drivers,\nStafford offers easy links to major roads such as the M6 (via junctions 13 and\n14), the A34 to Stone, Stoke-on-Trent, Walsall, and Birmingham, the A518 to\nTelford and Uttoxeter, the A449 to Wolverhampton and Penkridge and the A513 to\nLichfield. It is also less than 55 minutes\u2019 drive to Birmingham International\nAirport for those travelling further afield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local bus\nroutes<\/a> are also plentiful, including the No.5 to Telford, 817A to\nRodbaston via Cannock, the 825 to Lichfield and the 877 to Wolverhampton. Fans\nof two wheels will enjoy the numerous cycle\nroutes<\/a> locally, including the Stafford to Newport Green Way, the Manifold Track,\nand numerous trails across nearby Cannock Chase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a more\nleisurely journey, the picturesque Staffordshire\nand Worcestershire Canal<\/a> runs close to Baswich and Wildwood and links the River\nSevern at Stourport with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Great Haywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stafford and the\nsurrounding areas are in the\ncatchment area for a good range of primary, secondary, independent and SEND\nsettings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of local primary schools, St Paul’s CofE Primary\nSchool has been rated \u2018outstanding\u2019 by Ofsted<\/a> and popular options St Austin’s Catholic Primary School,\nJohn Wheeldon Primary Academy and St Leonard’s Primary School have all been\nrated \u2018good\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For older children, there are a number of popular secondary\nschools locally including Blessed William Howard Catholic School and King\nEdward VI High School. Stafford is also home to independent school Stafford Grammar School<\/a>, which includes a Prep School<\/a> and sixth form, and The Haven\nSchool<\/a>, an independent\nspecial school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.\nSelective school St Joseph\u2019s College<\/a> in nearby Trent Vale has been continuously rated\n\u2018outstanding\u2019 by Ofsted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nterms of further education, Stafford College<\/a> (part of the Newcastle\nand Stafford Colleges Group) offers a wide range of apprenticeships and higher\neducation courses and has been rated \u2018outstanding\u2019 by Ofsted. The town is also home\nto Staffordshire University<\/a> which offers\nundergraduate, postgraduate, distance learning, access and apprenticeship\ncourses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthe younger members of the family, there are plenty of baby and toddler groups and classes<\/a> and highly rated nurseries<\/a> available too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Stafford residents benefit\nfrom the area\u2019s wide range of amenities and leisure activities, with shops,\ncafes and parks located conveniently within the town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traditional\nMarket Square and town centre are home to a great range of high street\nfavourites and independent retailers plus supermarkets\nTesco, Asda, Co-op, Sainsbury\u2019s and Iceland and a selection of banks, a post office,\nand other essential services. The impressive new Riverside<\/a> retail complex is\nhome to the likes of H&M, Primark, M&S and New Look plus a number of\npopular eateries and the six screen Odeon Luxe cinema. Queens Retail Park on\nthe outskirts of town offers large branches of Next, Boots, B&M and\nHobbycraft amongst others. There\u2019s also the regular indoor market<\/a> which\nis open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays each week with an\nincredibly varied range of stalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to\neateries, there is an extensive selection of options in Stafford. From popular\ncafes like quirky, royalty themed Cup a\nCha<\/a> to the upmarket Woodlands\nRestaurant<\/a> and authentic Mediterranean Grill restaurant Anatolian Palace<\/a>, plus cosy\npubs The Dog and Doublet Inn <\/a>and The Red Lion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given its strong heritage, Stafford still retains a number of cultural\nlandmarks which are a fascinating visit for history buffs. Check out Stafford Castle<\/a>, the Elizabethan Ancient High House<\/a> and nearby National Trust property the Shugborough Estate<\/a> to learn more about the history of the local\narea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to getting back to nature, award winning Victoria Park<\/a>, Wildwood Park<\/a> and Rowley Park<\/a> are all\nlocated within the town and offer sports facilities and clubs, play areas,\nskate parks and peaceful, scenic gardens. The stunning Cannock Chase ANOB<\/a> nature\nreserve is only minutes away and home to scenic heath land, forests and\nhistoric parklands and the rugged Peak Distract National Park<\/a>, is only\n50 minutes\u2019 drive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For indoor activities, head to the well-equipped Stafford Leisure Centre<\/a> or the\ngreat range of gyms and fitness studios throughout the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Stafford and the\nwider Staffordshire area has a jam-packed social calendar the whole year through,\nincluding the monthly Stafford\nWalking Street Market<\/a>, the annual Ironman Staffordshire<\/a>, Staffordshire\nDay<\/a> and the Staffs\nFest<\/a> music festival to name but a few!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culture vultures\nwill enjoy the Stafford\nGatehouse Theatre<\/a>\u2019s impressive range of theatre, live music, entertainment\nand comedy plus the regular Shakespeare productions, historical reenactments,\ncraft fairs and workshops which take place at Stafford\nCastle<\/a> each summer. There are also\na number<\/a> of arts organisations and community groups across Staffordshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another popular\nattraction is the Alton Towers theme park. Great for kids of all ages but not\nfor the faint of heart! The theme park is around 40 minutes\u2019 drive from\nStafford or alternatively there is a direct bus, the X41.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
