The seaside\nresort of Torquay is located in the south west county of Devon on the stretch\nof Torbay coastline popularly referred to as the \u2018English Riviera\u2019. A\nsettlement has existed in the area since the Stone Age and Torquay has a rich\nhistory from the Roman occupation right through to its role in World War II as host\nto evacuees and US soldiers of the D-Day landings. The town has long been a\npopular spot for \u2018staycationers\u2019 thanks to its mild, Mediterranean-esque microclimate\nand despite the impression given by popular British TV shows Fawlty Towers and The Hotel<\/a>,\nTorquay hotels also regularly receive accolades such as TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s\nChoice Awards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, both\nvisitors and homebuyers alike are attracted to Torquay\u2019s sublime beaches like Torre\nAbbey Sands, Babbacombe, Oddicombe and Antsey Cove. Prospective residents are\nalso drawn to great retail and leisure options, a good range of schools and\nsome competitive property prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Only 18 miles south\nof county town Exeter and 28 miles from Plymouth, Torquay has good transport\nlinks by road and rail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For drivers, the A380\nSouth Devon Expressway connects Torquay with Newton Abbott and Exeter to the\nnorth, Paignton to the south and Totnes and the A38 Devon Expressway to the\nwest for further westbound connections to Plymouth and Cornwall. Exeter Airport\nis around 30 minutes\u2019 drive for those travelling further afield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two train\nstations in Torquay. Torquay<\/a> train station offers frequent services on the Great Western Railway\nLine to Paignton (in 6 minutes) Newton Abbott (in 11 minutes) and Totnes (in 30\nminutes). There is also a direct train to London Paddington in 3 hours which\nstops at Taunton, Newbury and Reading as well. Torre<\/a> train station is on the Riviera Line between Exeter and Paignton and\noffers hourly services Monday-Saturday with more infrequent services on\nSundays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Torquay is also\nserved by a number of local bus\nroutes<\/a> including the 12\nbetween Newton Abbott and Brixham, the 100 to Paignton and Totnes and long\ndistance National Express services the 404 between London and Penzance and the\n501 between London and Plymouth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fans of two-wheels\nwill find plenty of scenic local cycle routes<\/a> in Torquay and the wider Torbay area such as the Cockington\nValley Loop & the Geopark Trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Torquay has a good\nselection of primary, secondary, grammar and independent schools to choose from\nlocally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highly rated primary\nschools include St Margaret\u2019s Primary School, Ellacombe Church of England\nAcademy and Upton St James CofE Primary School, with the vast majority of\nTorquay primary schools receiving a \u2018good\u2019 rating from Ofsted<\/a>. Shiphay Learning Academy and Paignton\u2019s Oldway Primary School have\nreceived an \u2018outstanding\u2019 rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Torquay is also home\nto five secondary schools: Torquay Academy, The Spires College, St Cuthbert\nMayne School and selective schools Torquay Boys’ Grammar School and Torquay\nGrammar School for Girls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of\nindependent schools, the Abbey School and EF Academy Torbay can be found\nlocally too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For further and\nhigher education, The Spires College, St Cuthbert Mayne and both grammar\nschools offer a sixth form option and South\nDevon College<\/a> in Paignton offers\nan extensive range of courses including A-levels, apprenticeships, adult learning\nand university degrees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the younger members of the\nfamily, Torquay has plenty of baby and toddler groups and classes<\/a> plus a number of popular day nurseries<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite its seaside vibe, Torquay boasts all the amenities you could need on your doorstep. With supermarkets Tesco, Asda, Co-op, Lidl and Sainsburys for all the essentials, Torquay is also home to a wealth of popular high street shops such as Primark, Marks and Spencer, Next and Boots plus a number of independent retailers in areas like St Marychurch and the marina of Torquay Harbour. For a serious retail fix, the shops and leisure facilities of Exeter are also less than 40 minutes away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst there is no shortage of seaside delicacy\nfish and chips (Hanbury\u2019s<\/a> in particular stands out), Torquay also has a great selection of\neateries to tempt all palates. Torquay locals are a\nsocial bunch, with plenty of events happening throughout the year, including\nthe popular Torbay Royal Regatta, International Agatha Christie Festival, the Torquay\nGin & Fizz Festival, British Chess Championships and Winter Fest<\/a> Christmas Fair to name an eclectic few. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impressive Torre\nAbbey<\/a> which was originally\nfounded as a monastery in the 12th century is now home to art galleries, live\nentertainment and stunning gardens reminiscent of Devon resident Agatha\nChristie’s most famous works and the area\u2019s strong heritage can also be\ndiscovered at Torquay Museum<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
