The former coal port \u2013 the world\u2019s\nlargest exporter in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century \u2013 is now primarily a\nseaside resort and manufacturing hub which has grown to encompass nearby villages\nCadoxton, Barry Island and Sully. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frequently\nvoted one of the most desirable places to live in Wales thanks to the rich\nlocal history, stunning Vale of Glamorgan scenery, great education and leisure\nfacilities, homes in Barry are also very competitively priced. In 2020, house\nprices in Barry were 38% less than in the Vale of Glamorgan overall and over\nthe last 12 months the average house price was a very affordable \u00a3192,056,\nparticularly in comparison to pricey Vale of Glamorgan neighbours Penarth (\u00a3354,009)\nand St Donats (\u00a3720,000). New builds, waterfront developments, stone-built\nterraces and Victorian period properties are all on offer in Barry.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town is\nalso well-connected by road and rail and nearby Cardiff Airport is around 7\nminutes\u2019 drive from the centre of town. Services are also\navailable to Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and Bridgend with connections to Swansea\nin less than 1.5 hours via a change at Bridgend plus London Paddington in 2.5\nhours via a change at Cardiff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cardiff\nBuses also offer services from Barry to Cardiff, Penarth and nearby Llantwit\nMajor and the A4050 is the main road link to Cardiff, surrounding areas and\nonwards to the M4 via Junction 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nearest stations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/barry\">Barry<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/tfwrail.wales\/stations\/barry-island\">Barry Island<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/barry-docks\">Barry Docks<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/cadoxton\">Cadoxton<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schools and education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barry boasts a good mix of primary and secondary\nschool settings which are highly rated by the Welsh Government&#8217;s National\nSchool Categorisation System. The vast majority of local schools come in the\ntop two ratings bands and none appear in the lowest band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High Street Primary and Oak Field Primary are both highly rated by the\nWelsh version of Ofsted, Estyn. Barry is also home to four popular secondary\nschools, Pencoedtre High School, Whitmore High School, St Richard Gwyn Catholic\nSchool and Welsh medium comprehensive Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg. When it\ncomes to independent schools, Westbourne School in Penarth is also highly rated\nand offers boarding options as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For further and higher education,\n<a href=\"https:\/\/cavc.ac.uk\/en\">Cardiff\nand Vale College<\/a> provides a varied and interesting range of\ncourses and Barry residents are within easy commuting distance of Cardiff\nUniversity, Cardiff Metropolitan University, the University of South Wales and\nSwansea University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And not forgetting those smaller members of\nthe family, Barry is also home to a number of baby and toddler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.happity.co.uk\/barry\/baby-toddler-classes\">groups\nand classes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leisure and amenities <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re looking for a full-on retail fix,\nthe bright lights of Cardiff are just a short hop, skip and a jump away.
