Home to King Alfred the Great in the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury, Lewisham remained a village until the arrival of the railways in the\n19<sup>th<\/sup> century when the area became popular with commuters and large\nfamily homes with spacious gardens began to spring up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite significant bombing and\nfatalities during the World War II Blitz and a period of post war decline,\nLewisham has seen significant regeneration since the 1990s to restore the area\nto its former glory. New homes, improved amenities in the town centre, leisure\nfacilities and transport links have all been introduced with more still to\nfollow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the gentrification which has\nseen prices skyrocket in nearby south east hotspots Forest Hill, Brockley,\nPeckham and Greenwich has been slower to happen here, making Lewisham and\nnearby Hither Green two of London\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/homesandproperty\/buying-mortgages\/hither-green-and-lewisham-are-the-top-homes-hotspots-for-london-s-firsttime-buyers-a98136.html\">most popular spots<\/a> in recent years for first time buyers\nlooking for a bit more for their money. Lewisham\u2019s prime zone 2 location,\nexcellent commuter links to central London and the Docklands plus a rich sense\nof culture and community that sees it set to become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitlondon.com\/things-to-do\/event\/48688572\">The Mayor&#8217;s London Borough of Culture<\/a> in 2022 all make it popular with\nhomebuyers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an average property price of \u00a3514,202\nin the past 12 months, Lewisham is significantly more affordable than pricey\nneighbours Blackheath (\u00a3694,330), Crofton Park (\u00a3626,029) and Brockley\n(\u00a3623,405), plus South East London overall (\u00a3563,922). Indeed, you can still\npick up a 2-bedroom flat for less than \u00a3300,000 or a generous 4-bedroom\nterraced house with a garden for around \u00a3650,000. Keep reading! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transport links <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lewisham station is a terminus for\nDocklands Light Railway services to Tower Gateway, Stratford International and\nBank which is less than 30 minutes away. DLR services to Canary Wharf take just\n16 minutes. Lewisham station also has rail services on the Southeastern line to\nLondon Bridge in 12 minutes, Waterloo East in 16 minutes, Cannon Street in 18\nminutes, Charing Cross in 22 minutes and Victoria in 27 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst there is currently no\nunderground service locally, plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/consultations.tfl.gov.uk\/tube\/bakerloo-extension\/\">extend the Bakerloo Line<\/a> to Lewisham are in the pipeline and it\nis possible to pick up the London Overground at nearby New Cross or New Cross\nGate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also a number of local bus <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/bus\/stop\/HUBLEW\/lewisham\">routes<\/a> such as the 21 to\nNewington Green via New Cross, London Bridge and Bank, the 24-hour 47 to\nShoreditch via Canada Water and Liverpool Street and the N136 night bus to\nOxford Circus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For drivers, the A20 runs through\nLewisham and will take you to Kent.
