Edgware is located in north London less\nthan 10 miles from Charing Cross and spans two London boroughs. The majority of\nEdgware falls under the London Borough of Barnet although a small area of south\neast Edgware is located in the London Borough of Harrow. Originally an\nAnglo-Saxon settlement called \u2018Ecgi\u2019s weir\u2019 and named after the nearby fishing\nholes (weirs) under the control of the Saxon Lord Ecgi, Edgware was primarily a\nmedieval rest stop for coaches along the old Roman Watling Street route into\nLondon from St Albans (now known as Edgware Road). It remained a village until\nthe 1920s when the introduction of the Edgware underground station in 1924 and\na programme of suburban expansion saw a steady influx of newcomers to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, multi-cultural Edgware is home\nto Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Hindu communities and is a popular,\nwell-heeled suburban area attracting a number of families thanks to a good\nrange of schools, lots of green outdoor space on the doorstep and plenty of spacious\nsemi-detached and detached homes. Commuters also love the great 24-hour\ntransport links to central London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an overall average property\nprice of \u00a3531,868 in the last 12 months, Edgware is one of the most affordable\nareas of Barnet (with an overall average price of \u00a3741,994) and Harrow (with an\naverage price of \u00a3555,816). The area is popular with homebuyers and house\nprices in North London saw an increase of 11% from 2019 to 2020 compared to 6%\nfor London overall. Whilst housing stock is predominantly inter war\nsemi-detached properties, newer developments such as Edgware Green and\napartment complexes on Green Lane have also sprung up in recent years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport\nlinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Zone 5 Edgware underground station is the northern terminus\nfor the Edgware branch of the Northern Line, meaning that elusive seat on the\ntube is pretty much a given and you can be at Euston in 26 minutes or Leicester\nSquare in half an hour. The area is also served by nearby zone 4 Burnt Oak\nunderground station on the Northern line, plus Canons Park and zone 4 Queensbury\nwhich are both on the Jubilee line. Mill Hill Broadway train station is on the 24-hour\nThameslink Line from Sutton and Wimbledon to St Albans and Luton with services\nto St Pancras International in less than 20 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also a number of local bus routes<\/a> with\nlinks to most of North London including the 79 towards Wembley and Alperton,\nthe 340 to Harrow and the 606 between Barnet and Queensbury, plus night buses\nlike the N5 towards Trafalgar Square and N16 to Victoria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For drivers, the nearby M1, A1 and A41 provide easy access to\nthe rest of London, the M25 and further afield. Heathrow Airport is 35 minutes\u2019\ndrive and London City Airport just under an hour, with Luton Airport a\n25-minute train journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
