{"id":2208,"date":"2021-04-11T16:49:15","date_gmt":"2021-04-11T16:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/?p=2208"},"modified":"2021-04-11T16:49:32","modified_gmt":"2021-04-11T16:49:32","slug":"whats-it-like-to-live-in-kings-lynn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dy36-2.stage.yopa-dev.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/whats-it-like-to-live-in-kings-lynn\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s it like to live in King&#8217;s Lynn?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market town\nand seaport of King\u2019s Lynn is located on the banks of the Great Ouse in Norfolk\nin the East of England, 36 miles from Peterborough and 44 miles from Cambridge.\nKnown locally as \u2018Lynn\u2019, which is thought to refer to either a body of water or\nthe Anglo-Saxon word <em>lean<\/em> (a farm), the town was named Bishop&#8217;s Lynn (<em>Len\nEpiscopi<\/em>) whilst it was overseen by the Bishop of Norwich in the Middle\nAges but renamed King\u2019s Lynn (<em>Lenne Regis<\/em>) in 1537 during the reign of\nHenry VIII and the Dissolution of the Monasteries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, homeowners\nare attracted to King\u2019s Lynn\u2019s historic centre with its impressive 15<sup>th<\/sup>\nand 18<sup>th<\/sup> century architecture and charming cobbled streets, proximity\nto the stunning Norfolk coastline and competitive house prices, with many young\nprofessionals moving out from Cambridge and Peterborough to get more for their\nmoney within a reasonable commute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, Norfolk\nis the most affordable county in the East of England, with an overall average\nhouse price of \u00a3272,318 in the past 12 months compared to pricey Hertfordshire\nat \u00a3499,405 and Cambridgeshire at \u00a3324,942 (with an average house price in Cambridge\nitself of \u00a3517,472). King\u2019s Lynn is even better value, with an average house\nprice of \u00a3184,675 over the last year, making it the most affordable area of\nNorfolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It probably\ncomes as no surprise then that the town is a regular fixture on great places to\nlive lists, and even took the number 6 spot on Rightmove\u2019s happiest places to\nlive in the UK list in recent years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interested to\nfind out more? Read on! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transport\nlinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King\u2019s Lynn\nrailway station is located at the end of the Fen Line between King\u2019s Lynn and Cambridge,\nwhich is a 52-minute journey and offers regular onward connections to London, Birmingham\nNew Street, Brighton and Stansted Airport amongst others. There is also an hourly,\ndirect service from King\u2019s Lynn to London King\u2019s Cross which takes one hour 50\nminutes.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King\u2019s Lynn is\nwell serviced by local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norfolk.gov.uk\/roads-and-transport\/public-transport\/buses\/bus-stations-and-stops\/kings-lynn-bus-station\">bus routes<\/a> between the coast and inland Norfolk,\nwith services to Peterborough, Norwich, Cromer, Wells-next-the-Sea, North\nWalsham and Hunstanton. There are also a number of cycle routes locally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes\nto driving, the A47 connects King\u2019s Lynn with Peterborough in 50 minutes and\nNorwich in just over an hour and the A10 will take you to Cambridge in around\nan hour and 15 minutes. Other areas of Norfolk are reached via the A148 and the\nA149. A trip to the sandy beaches at Hunstanton is less than 30 minutes\u2019 drive.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nearest\nstations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/kings-lynn\">King\u2019s Lynn<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a good range of options in King\u2019s\nLynn and the surrounding North West Norfolk catchment area when it comes to\neducation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local primary schools Eastgate Academy and Ingoldisthorpe\nChurch of England Voluntary Aided Primary School are both rated \u201coutstanding\u201d\nby Ofsted with 38 other primary schools in the area rated as \u201cgood\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to secondary schools, Churchill\nPark Complex Needs School, The College of West Anglia, Springwood High School\nand St Clement&#8217;s High School have all been rated \u201cgood\u201d. Independent schools Glebe\nHouse School and Nursery for ages 0 to 14 in nearby Hunstanton and Westfield\nHouse School for pupils from 10-18 with SEMH needs are also popular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For further and higher education, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cwa.ac.uk\/\">College of West Anglia<\/a> has a campus locally\noffering a range of courses and apprenticeships plus higher education options\nsuch as degrees, foundation degrees and HNDs. And of course, the world-renowned\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/\">University of Cambridge<\/a> is also on the doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the youngest members of the family there\nare a great selection of baby and toddler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familiesonline.co.uk\/local\/west-norfolk\/in-the-know\/parent-and-toddler-groups-west-norfolk\">groups\nand classes<\/a> available locally too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leisure and\namenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its rich\nmaritime history, King\u2019s Lynn\u2019s old town has retained much of the impressive\narchitecture from its heyday as the country\u2019s biggest seaport including the\nelegant 17<sup>th<\/sup> century Custom House and the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century\nGuildhall which dates back to 1442 and is the oldest theatre still in use in\nthe UK. The <a href=\"https:\/\/truesyard.co.uk\/\">True&#8217;s Yard Fisherfolk Museum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnorfolk.co.uk\/King's-Lynn-Military-Experience-Centre\/details\/?dms=3&amp;venue=0166240\">Military Experience Centre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk\/lynn-museum\">Lynn Museum<\/a> tell the\nhistory of King\u2019s Lynn and the local area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/oxburgh-hall\">Oxburgh Hall<\/a>, 12<sup>th<\/sup> century <a href=\"http:\/\/www.castlerising.co.uk\/\">Castle\nRising<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/kingslynnminster.org\/\">King\u2019s\nLynn Minster<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnorfolk.co.uk\/King's-Lynn-Greyfriars-Tower\/details\/?dms=3&amp;venue=0284240\">Greyfriars Tower<\/a> are also a must visit for history and\nheritage enthusiasts and the Queen\u2019s Norfolk residence <a href=\"https:\/\/sandringhamestate.co.uk\/\">Sandringham<\/a> is less than 20 minutes away.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you tire of\nthe stunning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk\/\">Norfolk Coastline<\/a> (officially designated an Area of\nOutstanding Natural Beauty) then the beautiful 700-acre <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pensthorpe.com\/\">Pensthorpe\nNatural Park<\/a> is also on\nthe doorstep and King\u2019s Lynn itself is home to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.west-norfolk.gov.uk\/info\/20067\/parks_and_gardens\/409\/the_walks\">The Walks<\/a> park and gardens. For fitness of the\nindoor variety, the sports club and athletic centre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alivewestnorfolk.co.uk\/venues\/lynnsport\/\">Alive Lynnsport<\/a> offers a range of fitness classes and\nsports facilities including disability sports, a skatepark and climbing wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes\nto retail, Kings Lynn has a great range of independent retailers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boomerangwithstyle.co.uk\/\">Boomerang\nwith Style<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/nikkumorganti.com\/\">Nikku\nMorganti<\/a> and bakers to\nthe Queen, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsthebakers.co.uk\/about.html\">Smiths<\/a>, alongside high street favourites M&amp;S, Primark and\nBoots. The <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouverquarter.com\/\">Vancouver Quarter<\/a> shopping centre is also home to stalwarts\nlike H&amp;M, TK Maxx, Sainsburys and Costa Coffee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Locals also\nlove the bars and eateries of the South Quay like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therathskeller.co.uk\/\">The\nRathskeller<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marriottswarehouse.co.uk\/\">Marriott\u2019s\nWarehouse<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/archerskingslynn\/\">Archers Kitchen and Cocktail Bar<\/a>, quirky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liquorandloaded.com\/\">Liquor\nand Loaded<\/a>, cosy\nriverside pub the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/crownmitrekingslynn\/\">Crown &amp; Mitre<\/a> and the Jamaican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/soulcafeandrestaurant\/\">Soul Caf\u00e9 and Restaurant<\/a> also score highly when it comes to dining out, as does the\nnearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/foxweasenham\/\">Fox &amp; Hounds<\/a> with its highly rated Sunday lunch.\nAward-winning craft ale house <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nipandgrowler.uk\/\">Nip and Growler<\/a> is also of note. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King\u2019s Lynn is no stranger to a festival, with longstanding\nevents such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingslynnfestival.org.uk\/\">King&#8217;s Lynn Festival<\/a> and its\nmany fringe events, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lynnlitfests.com\/\">The King&#8217;s Lynn\nLiterature Festivals<\/a>, the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingslynnhansefestival.co.uk\/\">Hanse Festival<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festivaltoo.co.uk\/\">Festival Too<\/a> all popular with locals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town is also home to the independent <a href=\"https:\/\/majestic-cinema.co.uk\/MajesticKingsLynn.dll\/Home\">Majestic Cinema<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingslynncornexchange.co.uk\/\">Corn Exchange<\/a> Theatre\nand Cinema, which hosts a range of live entertainment events, stand-up comedy,\npantomime and more. Historic, 15<sup>th<\/sup> century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/st-georges-guildhall\">St George\u2019s Guildhall<\/a> which\nonce hosted performances from Shakespeare himself is also still open for\nbusiness and home to the Stories of Lynn Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weekly Tuesday\nmarket takes place at the aptly named Tuesday Market Place with everything from\nfresh seafood, gifts and greetings cards to garden ornaments on offer. There is\nalso a market every Saturday at the (unsurprisingly named!) Saturday Market\nPlace which includes a monthly farmer\u2019s market. Nearby markets in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitwestnorfolk.com\/places\/downham-market\/\">Downham<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hunstanton-info.com\/things-to-do\/hunstanton-market\">Hunstanton<\/a> are a big draw too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safety &amp; Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes\nto crime and safety, reassuringly, the crime rate in both King&#8217;s Lynn and West\nNorfolk was lower than average for the Norfolk police force area in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norfolk Police\nengage actively with the local community both in person and via social media\nand have a Safer Neighbourhood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norfolk.police.uk\/your-area\/kings-lynn-north\">team<\/a> which is dedicated to community safety and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norfolk.police.uk\/advice\/child-protection\/safer-schools-partnerships\">Safer Schools Partnership<\/a> to teach young people how to handle\nsituations which may put them at risk of becoming a victim or perpetrator of\ncrime.
