A\nthriving market town with a big personality 15 minutes from Brighton and an\nhour away from London, the historic town of Lewes is nestled in the stunning South Downs National Park<\/a> and offers the ideal location for commuters\nwanting the best of both worlds. An Instagrammer\u2019s dream, Lewes is chock-full\nof traditional charm with pretty tile-hung cottages, higgledy-piggledy streets\nand the town\u2019s main attraction, medieval Lewes Castle<\/a>. Even the shops and\nstreet names have a quirky Harry Potter vibe with monikers like Closet and Botts<\/a> and Church Twitten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With\na strong sense of community and heritage, Lewes is also home to numerous local festivals,\nlectures, parades, fairs and markets and despite its close proximity to the City,\nhouse prices aren\u2019t too horrendous. The average house price in 2020 was a not\nunreasonable \u00a3484,197 and areas popular with homebuyers include the Old Centre,\nthe High Street, nearby Southover, The Pells and Wallands Park with a number of\nnew housing developments also available. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lewes\nis located just off the A27 between the coastal towns of Brighton and\nEastbourne which are 25 and 34-minutes\u2019 drive, respectively. There is also ample\nparking in the town itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lewes\nTrain Station is quite the spectacle, with a high glass roof and ornate gallery\nonly a short walk from the town centre. There are around 6 trains per hour to\nBrighton (in 15 minutes), 2 per hour to Gatwick (35 minutes away) and London\nVictoria which is 75 minutes away, although you should be aware that the train\nnormally splits in 2 halfway there, so make sure you\u2019re on the right half!\nThere are also 4 trains per hour to Eastbourne which is a 25-minute journey and\n3 to Hastings (just over an hour away). The\nbest way to discover the characterful town of Lewes is on foot. There are some lovely walks<\/a> in and around the town\nand there is also a big love for cycling here, with most local school children learning\ninvaluable road cycling skills at primary school. There are plenty of cycling routes<\/a> to keep you busy (you\ncan easily plan a route that avoids all those hills!) and you can hire both electric\nand manual bikes from the Cycle Shack<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lewes\nis known for its good schools<\/a> and the catchment\nincludes 7 schools with an \u201coutstanding\u201d rating from Ofsted and 26 with a \u201cgood\u201d\nrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nprimary schools, Southover CofE<\/a>, St Pancras Catholic<\/a>\nSchool\n(both ages 4-11), South Malling CofE and\nNursery<\/a>\n(ages 3-11) and Western Road<\/a> (4-11) are all popular\nlocally and definitely have that village feel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independent\nschool Lewes Old Grammar School<\/a> has a small intake of\nonly 130 children and offers places to boys and girls aged 3-18. It teaches a\nbroad curriculum to prepare young minds for the busy world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nsecondary schools, the popular Priory School<\/a> has been rated \u201cgood\u201d by Ofsted and is\na mixed comprehensive school for children aged 11-16. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nterms of further education, East Sussex College<\/a> provides a thriving\nand supportive community with a wealth of courses on offer. Anything from apprenticeships\nin hairdressing to short courses in first aid and leadership skills and plenty\nof A-Level options. Then you have Brighton University<\/a> 25 minutes away, a\nhugely popular and diverse institution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lewes\nhas plenty of food markets, bakeries, butchers and fishmongers creating a real\n\u201clocal\u201d feel to the shopping experience. It also has the perfect harmony of\nhigh street stores and small independent shops. Silverado<\/a> has a marvellous\ncollection of unusual trinkets and jewellery at reasonable prices, and Bonne Bouche<\/a> sells the best chocolate in town. Lewes\nalso has plenty of antique and charity shops to keep the bargain hunters happy\nand bookshops galore including the charming children\u2019s bookshop The Book Bag<\/a>. Lewes Flea market<\/a> is hidden inside the\nMethodist Church and has vintage dealers from all over the world selling their\nwares. Riverside Lewes<\/a> is another good place\nto check out popular local retailers and eateries. And don\u2019t forget to stop for\na quick bite at Flint Owl Caf\u00e9<\/a> for some baked\ndelights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\nit comes to food, there is a good selection of traditional pubs serving up a\nhearty meal, such as The Dorset<\/a> and The Lewes Arms<\/a>. Then you have Bills<\/a>. Yes, it is a chain, but it doesn\u2019t\nchange the fact that it offers great food and people watching if you\u2019re so\ninclined. Lewes<\/a> is also home to the\nflagship Bill\u2019s and its owner, Bill (of course!). For something slightly more upmarket,\nhead to Lime Tree Kitchen<\/a> for a modern European\nmenu with a sustainable ethos.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pubs\nand bars in Lewes are rarely crowded and not too crazy but enough to constitute\nas a \u201cnight out\u201d. Head to busy Brighton for proper partying. The Lewes Con Club<\/a> is the best venue for music and entertainment\nlocally. The latest and perhaps trendiest hang out is The\nDepot<\/a>.\nIt is a 3-screen cinema and caf\u00e9-restaurant and just an all-round fun place to socialise\nwith friends.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\nit is time for some fresh air, many locals head to Southover Grange<\/a>. Another popular\nactivity for the whole family is outdoor swimming in the Lido, Pells Pool<\/a>, which is the oldest fresh water outdoor\nswimming baths in the UK. Or take a leisurely boat ride along the River Ouse<\/a> or a trip to the\npeaceful Hillside Ponds. A popular local\u2019s tradition is to take some fish and chips<\/a> to the top of The\nDowns to watch the spectacular sunset over the chalky South Downs Hills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s On?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Without\ndoubt the biggest event on the Lewes social calendar is the annual Lewes Bonfire Night<\/a>. Crowds of around 80,000\nwatch the 17 burning crosses carried through the streets to represent the 17 Lewes Martyrs.<\/a> There are several\ndifferent bonfire societies in the area, and each brings their own procession for\nsome friendly local competition.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nPatina Parade<\/a> is a favourite event among local school\nchildren. Year 6 pupils from each school take part in an exhilarating parade\nthrough the town to celebrate the end of one chapter and the start of a new one\nbefore they embark on their senior school journey. It goes without saying that\nthe streets are filled with teary parents waving emotionally at their little\nhumans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\nget into the festive spirit, many like to chop down their own Christmas tree at\nWilderness Woods<\/a>. There are also a\nnumber of workshops and creative spaces to explore here.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lewes\nwouldn\u2019t be Lewes without a quirky tradition. Don\u2019t miss out on the World Pea Throwing Championships<\/a> at the Lewes Arms pub!\nAdults and children aim to throw a pea (frozen of course) the furthest\ndistance. All peas are provided by the pub itself. 44 meters is the record! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music\ngigs also take place across the town in various pubs and venues like the Elephant and Castle<\/a>\u2019s Saturday Folk Club. If\na night on the sofa is calling, take a quick tour of Harveys Brewery<\/a> then simply pick up some cask ales to take\nhome with you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthe history lovers, take a trip to Anne of Cleves House<\/a> to immerse yourself in\nsome Tudor high jinks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Homebuyers\nare attracted to the area\u2019s quiet, safe reputation and friendly Lewes was voted\none of the \u201ctop 6 places to live\nin Sussex\u201d<\/a>.\nAs you would expect from the home of the Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire &\nRescue Service and Lewes Crown Court, crime rates in Lewes are reassuringly low\nand lower than average<\/a> for the Sussex force\narea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
