Known for its cool warehouse\nconversions, amazing artisan street food and inviting gastropubs, Bermondsey in\nthe London Borough of Southwark has certainly seen a\nperiod of significant regeneration in recent years after a tumultuous history\nof highs and lows. Dating back to the 8th<\/sup> century, Bermondsey has\nvariously been a well-to-do 17th<\/sup> century garden suburb, the 19th<\/sup>\ncentury slum immortalised as ‘Folly Ditch’ in Oliver Twist<\/em>, prosperous hub to\nmanufacturing and the leather trade during the industrial revolution and victim\nof the Blitz and the fall of the manufacturing industry in the 20th<\/sup>\ncentury, giving the area its rather quirky architectural mix. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the once rundown neighbour to nearby hipster hotspots Dulwich and Peckham attracts those with their fingers on the pulse thanks to the transformation of numerous old industrial sites into stylish apartments, shops and restaurants. Bermondsey has even topped The Sunday Times<\/a> best places to live in London list, with the publication noting \u201cthe rise of an area that epitomises the modern, urban good life\u2026 Residents are typically young, affluent and often reside in photogenic lofts in converted warehouses, while railway arches are fast being converted into galleries, bars and restaurants.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Popular Bermondsey Street and riverside areas like Shad Thames can be pricey, property wise. However, average house prices in Bermondsey are still over 16% less than the borough of Southwark overall and an impressive 61% less than nearby Dulwich Village. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bermondsey\u2019s\ncentral location in Zone 1 is well served by public transport and it is also possible\nto access many parts of the city on foot. For instance, you can walk to London\nBridge Station in less than 30 minutes from most parts of Bermondsey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bermondsey\u2019s\ntube and rail stations are both located in Zone 2. Bermondsey underground\nstation is on the Jubilee Line with tubes to Waterloo, Westminster and Bond\nStreet in 5, 7 and 11 minutes respectively and eastwards to Canary Wharf in 4\nminutes. South Bermondsey train station has direct\nservices to London Bridge in 5 minutes and other services include East Dulwich,\nStreatham, Selhurst, Carshalton and Epsom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An additional stop on the South London Line of the London Overground is also expected as part of the New Bermondsey development in the South Bermondsey area, connecting the area with Clapham Junction and Highbury & Islington. TfL is also considering a Bakerloo line extension via Old Kent Road, although it is not yet funded or approved for construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bermondsey is also well served by buses<\/a>, including the 381 which runs to Waterloo, the 188 to Russell Square and North Greenwich, the C10 to Victoria and the 47 to Shoreditch, with a number of night bus routes also available to and from central London. There are also a number of Santander Cycles stations<\/a> in the local area for commuters who prefer two wheels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those\nwith a car, locations north of the River Thames can be reached via Tower Bridge\nand the M25 is a 45-minute drive. Gatwick Airport is just over an hour\u2019s drive\naway, depending on traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
