The\npicturesque town of Berkhamsted, or \u201cBerko\u201d as the locals call it, was named\nthe \u201cbest place to live in\nthe South East of England<\/a>\u201d by The Sunday Times in 2018 and it\u2019s easy to see why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berkhamsted\nis a medieval West Hertfordshire market town, surrounded by countryside and\nsituated between Tring and Hemel Hampstead. It offers a broad range of shops\nand eateries and burgeoning caf\u00e9 culture combined with great schools and plenty\nof greenspace, plus a speedy 30-minute commute into London if you\u2019re so\ninclined. Not only \u201caffluent and attractive\u201d according to The Sunday Times, Berkhamsted\nalso has an underlying eco-friendly ethos and residents are encouraged to think\nabout sustainability. Even the local Golf Club<\/a> is getting in on the act!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ntown has set up a number of conservation areas<\/a>, with the most central\nbeing full of character with its crisscross of streets lined with an eclectic\nmixture of charming period properties, both Victorian and Edwardian. Whilst\nBerkhamsted certainly isn\u2019t the cheapest part of the UK you can still pick up a\n3-bedroom terraced house for under \u00a3450,000. Music to the ears of ex-Londoners\nlooking for a more peaceful suburban existence and retirees wanting easy access\nto amenities and plenty of scenic countryside on the doorstep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berkhamsted\nis very well connected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\ncan reach London Euston by train<\/a> in a breezy 27 minutes,\nmaking the area ideal for commuters. There are also connections to Tring,\nNorthampton, Milton Keynes and Clapham Junction.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By\ncar, Berkhamsted is only 10 minutes from the M25 or the London Orbital Motorway<\/a>. A drive into Central\nLondon is a mere 35 miles. You can reach Heathrow in 45 minutes, Gatwick in 1\nhour and 15 minutes and Oxford in 1 hour. The M1 is also easily accessible. By\nbus, Arriva<\/a> runs the 500 service\nbetween Watford and Aylesbury via Berkhamsted and Hertfordshire buses are run\nby Intalink<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthose on two wheels, there are plenty of cycle paths<\/a> in and around\nBerkhamsted. You can even cycle all the way from Berkhamsted to Mile End<\/a> in London if you\u2019re\nfeeling energetic! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berkhamsted\nis a popular spot for families due to the huge selection of excellent schools<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nprimary education, Westfield Primary\nSchool and Nursery<\/a>\n(age 3-11), Victoria Church of\nEngland Infant and Nursey School<\/a> (age 3-7) and St Thomas More Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided\nPrimary School<\/a>\n(age 3-11) all come with an \u201coutstanding\u201d rating from Ofsted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nsecondary schools, Ashlyns School<\/a> is full of character\nand heritage and teachers \u201cconsistently create and sustain constructive,\ntrusting relationships\u201d according to Ofsted. You can attend this school from\nage 11-18. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berkhamsted School<\/a> is a renowned local\nindependent school for girls and boys ages 3-18. For an \u201coutstanding\u201d Ofsted\nrated grammar school option, Chesham Grammar School<\/a> has a reputation for\nexcellence and high academic standards.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nterms of further education, West Herts College<\/a> offers many exciting\ncourses, apprentices, foundation degrees and HNDs. The University of Hertfordshire<\/a> is also right on the\ndoorstep and is the UK\u2019s leading business-facing university. And of course, you\nhave all of the London universities<\/a> within commutable\ndistance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthe smaller members of the family there are a vast selection of baby and toddler groups<\/a> available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Berkhamsted\nis noted for its assortment of chic shops, superb places to eat and its \u201ccaf\u00e9\nculture\u201d. This can all be found on the high-street<\/a> and dotted along the canal side<\/a>. The art-deco-styled Gatsby<\/a> is perfect for fine-dining and Zero Sushi Bar<\/a> is wonderful for grabbing some exotic\nlunchtime cuisines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boat<\/a> on Ravens Lane is a\nreal local\u2019s favourite for enjoying a cool beverage during those hot summer\nmonths and is a relaxed place to sit and people watch. The Old Mill<\/a> has really good ales and just outside\nof the town is the Alfred Arms<\/a>, perfectly positioned\nfor a sit down after a tranquil walk in the bluebell woods<\/a> at Ashridge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nhigh-street contains all the usual high street names but is also overflowing\nwith independent retailers. Castle Street offers many upmarket boutique shops. Antique\nshops are also a staple in Berkhamsted, with Home and Colonial Antiques<\/a> being one of the most\npopular. It stocks everything from ornate jewellery to vintage clothing and\ninnovative interiors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nhistory buffs, the ruins of the moated Berkhamsted Castle<\/a> have become quite the\nlandmark. Edgar the Atheling<\/a> succumbed to the\nadvances of William the Conqueror<\/a> here in 1066. William\u2019s\nhalf-brother Robert then rebuilt the castle, therefore stamping his authority\non the town. Visiting the ruins has now become a popular day out<\/a> for all ages. You can\nalso do a Berkhamsted Audio Trail walk<\/a>. This pretty much does\nwhat it\u2019s says on the tin and there are lots of different walks to choose from.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\nescape to another green spot away from the crowds, head to Canal Fields<\/a>. This has a playground\nfor the children, a skate park, and is also home to Berkhamsted Bowls Club<\/a>. For nature\nenthusiasts, the Canal Fields gardens were designed for biodiversity and\nsustainability and in the summer months they are home to a wide range of bees\nand butterflies in the Millennium Garden. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthe optimum escapism, you have The Chilterns<\/a> on your doorstep, only 16 miles away. Enjoy\nthe quintessential rolling green hills of beautiful countryside alongside a\ntempting selection of pubs and restaurants.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthe keen athletes, Berkhamsted also hosts a variety of sporting activities\nincluding Golf<\/a>, Cricket and Tennis.\nNot forgetting a plethora of walks and cycle rides around the Grand Union Canal<\/a>. The Circular Walk<\/a> is a firm favourite\nwith locals.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s On?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Berkhamsted\nis the place to be if you like festivals, with the arts, literacy and jazz all\nmaking an appearance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berkofest<\/a> is well worth putting in\nyour calendars. It\u2019s a music festival with local and big-name bands, but also a\nfun day out for the family with children\u2019s workshops and a variety of food and\ndrink. Berkhamsted was also once home to the novelist Graham Greene<\/a> and there is now a festival in his\nname, the Graham Green\nInternational Festival<\/a>. This is held over 4 days in various locations around the\ntown and consists of lectures, films, discussions and social events all based\naround the author himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art\ndeco Rex Cinema<\/a> is in the heart of the\ntown and dates back to 1936. It shows both modern blockbusters and vintage\nclassics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nweekly market (every Wednesday 8.30am-5pm) also still takes place in the 13th<\/sup>\ncentury Market Square with an impressive assortment of stalls. There is a\nmonthly Farmers Market<\/a>  (10am-2pm every 3rd<\/sup> Sunday)\nserving fresh local produce and delicious nibbles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As\na sought-after commuter town with a strong sense of community, safety is a key reason\nfor homeowners choosing Berkhamsted. Reassuringly, crime rates in the area are\nmuch lower than the UK average and there are also a number<\/a> of neighbourhood watch\nand Safer Neighbourhood Teams in place across Hertfordshire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
