Originally\na market town dating back to the Iron Age, modern Basingstoke was created in\nthe mid-20th<\/sup> century as on over-spill city for nearby London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today,\nBasingstoke is a fast paced, modern city with a rich cultural heritage, surrounded\nby the pretty villages of the beautiful Hampshire countryside. Home to an\nincreasing number of big businesses itself, Basingstoke\u2019s proximity to London \u2013\nwhich is only 40 minutes away by train \u2013 means it is increasingly popular with\ncommuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Add\nto this the thriving nightlife, excellent shopping and plenty of family-friendly\nactivities and it is hardly surprising that Basingstoke was voted one of the top 50 places to live\nin Britain in 2020<\/a>\nin the Halifax annual Quality of Life survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basingstoke\nscored highly for employment rates, earnings, health and well-being, low crime\nrates, good education and affordable house prices. Indeed, the average house\nprice in Basingstoke in 2020 was \u00a3314.233. Considerably less than other popular\ncommuter towns like Farncombe in Surrey and Hildenborough in Kent, with\naverages house prices of \u00a3495,619 and \u00a3534,814 respectively in 2020.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not\nthat you\u2019ll need any more persuading, but here are a few more reasons why\nBasingstoke might be for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Basingstoke\nis well connected by rail, road and air. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basingstoke Train\nStation<\/a>\nis located on the edge of the town, two minutes\u2019 walk from the main shopping\narea and served by Great Western Railway<\/a> and South Western railway<\/a>. The fastest train\nfrom Basingstoke to London Waterloo only takes 40 minutes and there are direct services<\/a> available to\nSouthampton, Bournemouth and Manchester Piccadilly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ntown has an excellent network of roads<\/a>, with an easy-to-navigate\nring road (the \u201cRingway<\/a>\u201d) and plenty of\nroundabouts. Basingstoke is also conveniently situated on the M3 Motorway from\nLondon to Southampton, slap-bang in the middle and an hour\u2019s drive from both.\nThe A303 links Basingstoke to the Westcountry and the A33 connects with Reading\nand the M4. Parking is plentiful in the town centre at Festival Place<\/a> and at the top of town<\/a>, although there is\nalso the option of the Park and Ride facility from the central bus station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even\nthough Basingstoke is a fairly decent sized town, you are still able to access\nmost of it by foot and pubs, restaurants, shops and leisure facilities are all\nwithin walking distance of the bus and train stations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\ntravelling further afield, the nearest airport is Southampton Airport<\/a> which is only 25\nminutes away. You can also access London Heathrow Airport<\/a> by train from\nBasingstoke in 1 hour 23 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Basingstoke\nhas an abundance of highly rated schools and colleges<\/a>, mostly with either a\n\u201cgood\u201d or \u201coutstanding\u201d Ofsted rating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particularly\nnotable schools with a \u201cgood\u201d rating are Castle Hill Primary School<\/a>, which provides high\nquality education in a happy and nurturing environment, St Marks CE Primary School<\/a> who love to involve\nchildren in academic and extracurricular activities, and Great Binfield\u2019s Primary School<\/a> which is dedicated to\ndeveloping moral and cultural well-being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nare also a collection of Early Years settings that have all received an\n\u201coutstanding\u201d Ofsted rating, including Four Lanes Infant School<\/a> and Castle Hill Infant\nSchool<\/a>,\nboth taking children age 4-7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nsecondary schools, Bishop Challoner\nCatholic Secondary School<\/a> has a \u201cgood\u201d Ofsted rating, and the Vyne School<\/a> helps young minds to achieve their potential\nin life. Dove House School<\/a> is an \u201coutstanding\u201d\nschool for children with learning disabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nterms of further education, Queens Mary Collage<\/a> is a vibrant sixth\nform collage with amazing facilities situated in 30 acres of leafy grounds. Winchester University<\/a> is also only 17 miles away and offers a\nhuge selection of courses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthe younger members of the family there are a huge selection of nurseries and\npre-school settings<\/a>\nand plenty of baby and toddler groups<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and Amenities <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There\nis always a lot going on in Basingstoke! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nfans of shopping local, there is a great selection of farm shops like Wellington Farm Shop<\/a> and caf\u00e9 which is open\n7 days a week and Laverstoke Park Farm<\/a>, an organic,\nbiodynamic family farm shop whose ethos is to provide the \u201cbest tasting,\nhealthiest food without compromise\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ntown itself is also packed full of the usual high street stalwarts, but for the\ntrue shopaholics among you, the most popular destination is the award winning Festival Place<\/a>. Consistently rated one\nof the south\u2019s best shopping<\/a> destinations for its light,\nairy interior, popular shopping meccas including Apple, Zara, TK Max and\nM&S and an impressive range of eateries. Also on offer are swimming pools,\ngyms, squash courts, a climbing wall, cinema, health spa and an indoor assault\ncourse. The newest addition is Flip Out<\/a>, an indoor trampoline\npark and soft play. Festival Place \u201crestaurant quarter\u201d<\/a> also attracts a young\nlively crown on a Friday and Saturday night, but be sure to get there early to shot\ngun a table. The Festival Street Kitchen<\/a> in particular has some\nimpressively cosmopolitan dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nsomething a little more traditional, head to the Bolton\nArms<\/a>\nor Bartons Mill<\/a> for an impressive\nSunday roast or enjoy a sophisticated and indulgent afternoon tea at Tylney Hall<\/a> or the Four Seasons<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthose with energy to burn, head to Planet Ice<\/a> (also home to The Basingstoke Bison<\/a> team) for ice skating, the Aquadrome Swimming\nCentre<\/a>,\nBasingstoke Golf Centre<\/a> and of course iFly<\/a>, one of only 3 places\nin the UK to do indoor sky diving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nyou need to unwind, green outdoor space is never too far away. There are lots\nof parks and open spaces such as the central Eastrop Park<\/a> complete with a\nboating lake and river. Then south of the town centre with a skatepark,\nexercise equipment, tennis court and bandstand is War Memorial Park<\/a>. The gardens of Basing House<\/a> are also a great place\nto relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nthe history buffs amongst you, the Milestone Museum<\/a> captures the attention\nof all ages. You can walk the streets of Victorian England and discover what\nday-to-day life was really like. Another local favourite, the Willis Museum<\/a>, is a local history\nmuseum featuring a diverse range of items including a wedding cake from 1898.\nYum!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearby\nHighclere Castle<\/a>, the setting for the\npopular television drama Downton Abbey<\/a>, cuts an impressive figure in the\nHampshire countryside and the stately home and gardens of Stratfield Saye House<\/a> which have been home\nto the Dukes of Wellington since 1817 are also now open to the public. Or take\na walk around the untouched countryside of Steventon<\/a> which influenced much\nof Jane Austen\u2019s work. The Jane Austen\u2019s\nHistorical Walk<\/a>\nis sure to inspire!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s On?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Basingstoke\nhas a jam-packed diary of events to keep you busy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Anvil Arts<\/a> takes place across 3\nvenues and is at the heart of music and culture in Basingstoke. It has\nexcellent acoustics and hosts a whole series of events from music, dance,\ntheatre, opera and comedy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basingstoke\nalso hosts an annual Kite Festival<\/a> and an annual Transport Festival<\/a> as well as the famous Basingstoke Festival<\/a> for arts and\nentertainment which includes the B LOVE<\/a> music festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Like most towns, crime does\nexist in Basingstoke, but rates are low compared to similarly sized towns and\nin the county of Hampshire as a whole. There is also a big emphasis on the Community Safety Team<\/a> who are in place to\nhelp local communities feel safer and improve quality of life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
