Luckily, many mortgage lenders in the UK have recognised this fact and have started offering mortgages not just for over-55\u2019s, but also for people well into retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, these days there isn\u2019t a maximum age for applying\nfor a mortgage at all. Instead it varies by lender, with even big players such\nas the Halifax now offering mortgages which can be repaid up to the age of 80,\nand some of the more specialist lenders going as high as 95.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It\u2019s important to note that many lenders will consider the \u201coldest applicant\u201d when it comes to this maximum age threshold, something to bear in mind if you are applying for a mortgage alongside someone who is your junior. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand just how much maximum ages can vary by lender,\nwe\u2019ve trawled through the small print of some of the biggest mortgage providers\nand have included our findings below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Barclays:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barclays.co.uk\/help\/mortgages\/eligibility\/age-limit\/\">Barclays\nstate<\/a> that the maximum age at the end of the mortgage term should be 70 or\nyour retirement age, which is sooner. However, they will still consider persons\nolder than this so long as they can provide evidence that they will be able to repay\nfees during retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nationwide:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationwide.co.uk\/products\/mortgages\/borrowing-in-later-life\">For\nnew borrowers<\/a>, Nationwide\u2019s later life mortgages must be repaid on or before\nthe applicant\u2019s 85<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, whereas current nationwide mortgage\nholders can apply until their 95<sup>th<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Halifax:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in May 2016, this lender increased its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax-intermediaries.co.uk\/print\/criteria\/mortgage\/default.aspx?isfad=0\">age\ncap from 75 to 80<\/a>.
