Resting at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, Aylesbury is a\nmarket town which \u2013 due to its proximity to London \u2013 has grown in popularity\nover recent years. To demonstrate the scale of this growth, as recently as the\n1960\u2019s the town held a population of no more than 28,000 but in recent years\nhas grown closer to 75,000 thanks to a number of new housing estates both in\nand around the town centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of the reason that Aylesbury has seen such a population\ngrowth in recent years is the affordability of its housing, which \u2013\ncomparatively speaking at least \u2013 is affordable for such as town in the\ncommuter belt. At the time of writing, the average flat costs \u00a3185,000,\nterraced properties \u00a3260,000 and semi-detached properties \u00a3310,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with the recent housing developments, Aylesbury retains\nits historic centre and still hosts a market on Wednesdays, Fridays and\nSaturdays in the cobbled market square. The area around St. Mary\u2019s church is\nespecially charming, with winding alleyways and picture-perfect cottages\ndotting the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aylesbury also enjoys some of the lowest unemployment rates\nin the country; only 1.3% of the population were unemployed in 2017 compared to\nthe national average of 3.3%. Healthcare is also good, with both Stoke\nMendeville Hospital and The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospitals serving the local\narea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Aylesbury Vale Parkway train station opened in 2008 and with\nit an easier commute in to Marylebone station for those living in the northern\nsuburbs of the town. There is also the more central Aylesbury train station in\nthe centre of town. Regardless of which train station you opt you, one of the\nbest things about commuting in from Aylesbury is that it\u2019s at the start (or\nend, depending on your perspective) of the line, meaning that you can often\nfind seats even at rush hour! Expect journey times into Marylebone of around 1\nhour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as being being well connected via rail, Aylesbury\nalso benefits from being close to the M40, A41 and A418, allowing easy access\nto Oxford, Bicester, London and Milton Keynes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is worth noting that the new HS2 line is due to pass\nalong the western half of the town, although trains will not be stopping at\nAylesbury. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Love them or hate them, Aylesbury has not one, not two, but\nthree grammar schools. The oldest is the boys\u2019 only Aylesbury Grammar which was\nfounded back in the 16th<\/sup> century, followed by Sir Henry Flloyd\nGrammar (founded in 1947) and the girls\u2019 only Aylesbury High School (founded in\n1959). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other schools in the area include The Grange School, John\nColet School, Ayesbury Vale Academy and The Mandeville School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Nearby Great Missenden was the home of author Roald Dahl for\nover 35 years, so it may come as no surprise that there is a Roald Dahl museum\nin the town, as well as one in Great Missenden itself. The museum in Aylesbury,\nthe Roald Dahl Children\u2019s Gallery, is an award winning space which uses\ncharacters and these from the author to educate children about history,\nliterature and science and is well worth a visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just outside of Aylesbury in nearby Stoke Mandeville is the Obsidian Art Gallery, showing work by a broad range of local and national artists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an evening at the theatre, look no further than Aylesbury Waterside which regularly shows plays directly from London\u2019s West End as well as touring musicals. Opened in 2010, the theatre is part of a wider rejuvenation of the waterside area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This leads us on to the two areas where Aylesbury suffers slightly; namely, shopping and dining. For the former, we recommend jumping in a car and heading to Bicester Village, a 25 minute drive away. This outlet village has some fantastic luxury and designer clothing stores, many of which offer heavy discounts. In terms of dining, Oasis does a fantastic kebab but the rest of the town is somewhat lacking for good \u2018proper\u2019 restaurants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and Crime<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime in Aylesbury Vale (which includes Aylesbury town and\nits surrounds) is slightly below average for similar areas in the UK, with\naround 54 crimes reported for every 1,000 of the population each month. This\nputs it broadly on-par with areas such as West Berkshire and East Hampshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, the town centre has struggled over the past\nfew years with anti-social behaviour, and crime as a whole has been slowly\nrising since 2016, in particular drug crime and public order offenses. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
