Known as \u201cThe Faithful City\u201d due to the part it played in the English Civil War, Worcester is a historic city with an abundance of character and charm. It\u2019s also a city which consistency ranks highly in surveys for happiness and safety, a testament to its good infrastructure, beautiful landscapes, historic architecture and low crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worcester has also played a prominent role in Britain\u2019s\nhistory for over two thousand years. This is the city where King Charles II\nescaped from Cromwell\u2019s forces, where Edward Elgar was born, where the world\u2019s\noldest continuously pubished newspaper is still published (Berrow\u2019s Worcester\nJourney, for those interested) and \u2013 most important of all \u2013 is where the\nlegendary Worcester Sauce is produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what\u2019s it like to live in Worcester, and what do you\nneed to know if you\u2019re considering a move to the city? Read on for find out\nmore!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Worcester is served by two train stations. The smaller, more centrally located Worcester Foregate Street and the larger but more out-of-the-way Worcester Shrub Hill in the east. A third station, Worcestershire Parkway, is located just outside of the city within easy access of both the M5 and A44. Whichever station you\u2019re travelling from, train times into London take between 2 to 3 hours, with trains in to Birmingham New Street taking just under an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of road links, Worcester is situated only a couple\nof miles from the M5 making holidays to the South West a breeze. The motorway\nalso gives easy access to Birmigham and the North West, as the M5 joins on to\nthe M6 near Wolverhampton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how much you\nlike aircraft noise) Worcester isn\u2019t particularly close to any airport with the\nnearest being Birmimgham International some 37 miles away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The vast majority of Worcester\u2019s primary schools receive\n\u2018good\u2019 Ofsted ratings, with the exceptions of St Celement\u2019s on Henwick Road and\nPitmaston Primary School on Malvern Road, both of which were given\n\u2018outstanding\u2019 ratings on their last inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For secondary schools it\u2019s much the same, with Bishop\nPerowne, Blessed Edward Oldcorne and Chrisopher Whitehead Language College all\nreceiving good Ofsted ratings. The latter has been awarded the title of the\n\u2018best secondary school in Worcester\u2019 by the website SchoolGuide.co.uk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independent schools in Worcester include the girls\u2019-only\nMalvern St James, The King\u2019s School and the Royal Grammar School, the latter of\nwhich is the 6th<\/sup> oldest school in the world having been founded in\n685 AD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With the nearby Malvern Hills boasting some of the finest\nviews in England, Worcester is a city with an abundance of walks on its\ndoorstep. Venture a little further and both the Cotswolds and the Forest of\nDean are easily accessible for day trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nearby market town of Evesham is also a delightful place\nto explore, known for its asparaguses and home to Jemima Packington, the\nworld’s first and only Asparamancer (meaning she\u2019s actually able to\npredict the future by tossing asparagus spears into the air and interpreting\nhow they land). According to the British Asparagus Festival\u2019s website, Jemima \u201chas\nmade dozens of accurate predictions in recent years, including the demise of\nGordon Brown, the credit crunch, and Oscar glory for British film The King\u2019s\nSpeech\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closer to home, there are four streets in Worcester known\nfor their great independent shops; Friar Street, New Street, Hopmarket and\nReindeer Court. There are also plenty of good eateries in the city centre\nincluding Globe Modern Bistro, Ostlers at No. 1 and our personal favourite, Pasha\nEverest (their curries are to die for).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, and any mention of food and drink in Worcester would be\nremiss without mentioning King Charles House on New Street. Here you can dine\nin the same building that King Charles II escaped from his enemies after losing\nthe Battle of Worcester in 1651!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In short, live music aplenty! For regular live music try Marr\u2019s\nBar on Pierpoint Street and Drummonds on New Street. For the festival goers\namong you there\u2019s the Worcester Music Festival in September,  the classical music focused Three Choirs festival\nand the nearby Mello and Sunshine Festivals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If music\u2019s not your thing that there is also the Worcestershire\nLitFest, Worcester Foodie Festival, and Worcester Motor Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of sporting events, Worcester is home to the oldest\nmotor-sport venue in the world at Shelsley Walsh. Worcester Racecourse is equally\nas prestigious, and has been hosting racing events such 1718. Worcestershire\nCounty Cricket Club is also based in the city, perfect for long summer days with\na jug (or two) or Pimms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Crime in Worcester (well, the South Worcestershire area) is\nslightly higher than one might expect, with some 70 recorded crimes for every\n1,000 of the population each month. This puts it broadly inline with Rugby, Cheshire\nEast and North Somerset.
