{"id":1580,"date":"2020-05-17T07:44:04","date_gmt":"2020-05-17T07:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/?p=1580"},"modified":"2020-05-18T07:49:05","modified_gmt":"2020-05-18T07:49:05","slug":"whats-it-like-to-live-in-weymouth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dy36-2.stage.yopa-dev.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/whats-it-like-to-live-in-weymouth\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s it like to live in Weymouth?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A popular holiday destination for centuries, Weymouth is a\nseaside town which \u2013 unlike many of its peers \u2013 has thrived in recent years.\nPart of this is of course due to the regeneration which took place in the run\nup to the 2012 Olympics when Weymouth hosted many of the sailing events, but\nit\u2019s also because the town has made the most if its enviable position on the\nJurassic Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boasting coastal walks aplenty, the best beach in the UK (as\nvoted by TripAdvisor) and enough geology to keep even James Hutton busy,\nWeymouth is the physical embodiment of the phrase \u201cif you\u2019ve got it, flaunt\nit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, not everyone who visits or lives in Weymouth does so purely on the merits of its surround. There\u2019s also a thriving year-round events program, our favourite being the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorsetseafood.co.uk\/\">Nyetimber Seafood Festival<\/a> which usually takes place every September. Weymouth also plays host to live music (including the Quayside Music Festival), beach volleyball match, and more sailing events than you could shake an oar at. Oh, and the pubs are fantastic too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weymouth is on the southern terminus of the South Western\nMain Line and has 1 to 2 trains to London hour, each taking just over two and a\nhalf hours to reach the capital. Most trains also stop at Dorchester, Poole,\nBournemouth, Southampton and Winchester, partly why the 142 mile trip to London\ntakes so long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If buses are more your thing then there are National Express\nroutes aplenty, going to London, Manchester, Liverpool and everywhere\nin-between. The town is also well served by more local routes, with the\n\u2018Jurassic Coaster\u2019 routes being especially popular, especially for those\nwalking the South West Coast Path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We won\u2019t spend long talking about Weymouth road connections\nsince \u2013 let\u2019s face it \u2013 we all have access to a map but rest assured that\nnearby A35 and A37 roads will take you everywhere you need to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nearest train stations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Weymouth<\/li><li>Upwey<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Primary schools in Weymouth mostly fall under the \u201cGood\u201d\nOfsted rating, with just a handful requiring improvement. The only\n\u201cOutstanding\u201d school in the local area is St Nicholas and St Laurence Church of\nEngland Primary School, Broadwey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondary School in and around Weymouth are a bit more of a\nmixed bag, with two out of the nine schools receiving \u201cInadequate\u201d rating by\nOfsted. Westfields Arts College is the only secondary school in the area\nawarded with the highest \u201cOutstanding\u201d rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leisure and Amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As touched upon previously, Weymouth is blessed by some of\nthe finest natural scenery in England. Long sandy beaches, rolling hills and\nthe increasingly popular South West Coast Path all add to Weymouth\u2019s appeal for\nthose looking for a more active life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/yopa-production-wordpress-content.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2020\/05\/weymouth-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2020\/05\/weymouth-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2020\/05\/weymouth-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2020\/05\/weymouth-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2020\/05\/weymouth-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/cdn.yopacrm.yopa.co.uk\/homeowners-hub\/uploads\/2020\/05\/weymouth.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visit-dorset.com\/explore\/areas-to-visit\/purbeck\">The Isle of Purbeck<\/a> for example, just a 30 minute drive from Weymouth town centre, is one of our favourite spots for cycling and hiking in the whole country. Although not an island as such (it is connected to the British mainland), it has a uniquely remote quality about it which \u2013 considering its proximity Poole and Weymouth \u2013 is quite remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jurassic Coast is also on Weymouth\u2019s doorstep, boasting fossils\ngalore for any budding palaeontologists. Fossils in this area are especially\nplentiful due to the fact that this section\u2019s geology actually dates from the\nJurassic era as opposed to the stretch in East Devon which is from the\npre-dinosaur Triassic era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those whose idea of leisure is a little more sedate, Weymouth has some great seafood restaurants in the town centre. Particular standouts include <a href=\"https:\/\/hallskitchen.co.uk\/\">Hall\u2019s Kitchen\u2019s<\/a> (whose crab soup is phenomenal) and <a href=\"https:\/\/les-enfants-terribles.co.uk\/\">Restaurant Les Enfants Terribles<\/a> on Custom House Quay. If you\u2019re worried Weymouth being a culinary wasteland, you need not worry any more\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, lots. Weymouth Pavillion is the best known centre\nfor arts in the town, boasting live entertainment and events every few days.\nThere\u2019s a real breadth to their listings as well, with everything from kids\u2019\nmusicals to live shows from the likes of The Drifters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If music isn\u2019t you think, then you may be more interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visit-dorset.com\/whats-on\/great-dorset-plant-fair-p2701623\">The Great Dorset Plant Fair<\/a> held at Athelhampton House which showcases unusual, difficult-to-find and exotic plants from more than 20 specialist nurseries and growers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the foodies amongst you, <a href=\"http:\/\/weymouthfoodfestival.co.uk\/\">Weymouth Food Festival<\/a> is held every summer and features live music, a cooking theatre, food to try (as one might expect) and even The Great Weymouth Bake-Off. There\u2019s also the Nyetimber Dorset Seafood Festival which is held in September around the historic harbourside. The menu for this year\u2019s event looks particularly scrumptious; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorsetseafood.co.uk\/menu\/\">you can check it out here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other regular events in Weymouth include the Nothe Fort\nArtillery Weekend and the yearly Armed Forces Day Celebrations, where veterans\nand visitors come together for a weekend of commemorations and celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safety &amp; Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crime in Weymouth has been declining slowly over the past\nthree years but there are still spikes in anti-social behaviour during the\nsummer season. In recent years, Weymouth police\u2019s \u201c100 days of summer\u201d have\nmanaged to flatten these summertime spikes somewhat, and in some Melcome Regis\nthis initiate has been credited as reducing summertime anti-social behaviour by\nsome 22%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, when it comes to crime everything\u2019s relative, and\nDorset County has a low crime rate (~53 monthly police recorded crimes per\n1,000 population) when compared to the average of England and Wales (~89). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A popular holiday destination for centuries, Weymouth is a seaside town which \u2013 unlike many of its peers \u2013 has thrived in recent years.
