Everything you could want in a family-friendly, city location exists in Catford. Situated just 8 miles and a 25 minute commute from central London (and a mere 11 minutes from London Bridge), this south-east suburb in the Borough of Lewisham is enjoying a period of regeneration<\/a> of late, with more to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catford played host to a scattering of houses as early as 1745 and it is said that the name represents the wild cats who frequented a ford across the nearby Ravensbourne River and are depicted in the town\u2019s famous grinning cat statue. In 1857, the arrival of the railway and Catford Bridge station provided transport links to central London and helped to develop the area with more homes and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike neighbouring areas such as sought after Forest Hill and Brockley, Catford has been slower to see urban reinvention<\/a>, which essentially means you can still get a lot more for your money when it comes to property. However, with more town centre regeneration in the pipeline and the proposal of a Bakerloo Line extension the smart money suggests you consider property investment in the area sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Catford can be accessed via three train stations. These are Catford (Sevenoaks to Blackfriars) Catford Bridge (London Charing Cross or Cannon Street and Hayes), and nearby Bellingham. Cannon Street trains from Catford Bridge also connect passengers to the DLR at Lewisham that travels to Canary Wharf, London City Airport, Bank and Stratford.  An extension of the Bakerloo Line<\/a> to Catford is in the pipeline, but there is also the option to pick up the London Overground at nearby New Cross or New Cross Gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catford is also served by a number of bus routes<\/a> like the 47, 171 and 185 that will take you to the city centre or other areas of London. For drivers, the A205 South Circular passes through Catford and the A2 is also nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closest airport to Catford is London City Airport<\/a> which is around 40 minutes away via the DLR from Lewisham. The airport flies to many domestic and European destinations but for everywhere else, London Heathrow<\/a> is a little under an hour away by car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catford has several excellent cycling routes<\/a> that are sure to test even the most experienced cyclist. What\u2019s more, Lewisham council<\/a> offer free cycling lessons for all ages as well as a 1 month bicycle hire scheme and cycling storage facilities across the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within Lewisham, there are 83 primary schools<\/a> to choose from, all within commutable distance from Catford. Of this number, an impressive 18 have received an \u2018Outstanding\u2019 rating from Ofsted, with the majority of the remaining schools rated as \u2018good\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are 24 secondary schools<\/a> within Lewisham to choose from, with 3 receiving an \u2018outstanding\u2019 rating from Ofsted and the vast majority achieving a \u2018good\u2019 rating. Local favourites include Torridon Primary School<\/a> and private St Dunstan\u2019s College<\/a>, offering junior, senior and sixth form provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catford residents have easy access to all of London\u2019s universities such as nearby Goldsmiths University<\/a>, the University of Greenwich<\/a> and Queen Mary University of London<\/a>, ranking 42nd<\/a>, 65th<\/a> and 12th<\/a> in the UK respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the youngest members of the family, Catford offers plenty of classes<\/a>, groups<\/a> and highly rated nurseries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Whilst the functional rather than aesthetically pleasing town centre and Catford Centre shopping mall are ripe for the planned regeneration<\/a>, there is still plenty on offer in the local area and quirky independent shops like the infinitely instagrammable The Emporium of Thrift<\/a> are beginning to pop up.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The local food market<\/a> is an exciting mix of street food stalls alongside local artists and crafters and FLK Chinese Groceries<\/a> is hugely popular with Londoners from all areas of the capital for their mix of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian ingredients and kitchenware.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catford also has a fantastic range of caf\u00e9s, bars and restaurants to choose from. Saigon Street<\/a> is a Vietnamese pop up restaurant that has been voted the best restaurant in the Borough for several years running. Asian restaurant Sapporo Ichiban<\/a> is considered a Catford institution and the numerous Turkish and Caribbean caf\u00e9s in the area such as Jerk Scene<\/a> add some spice to proceedings whilst The Gantry<\/a> serves a great menu full of traditional British classics including some spectacular Sunday roasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catford has an amazing range of bars and pubs on offer too. Bottle Bar and Shop<\/a> \u2013 voted Catford\u2019s best bar by locals \u2013 sell impressive and eclectic handmade bottled cocktails that you can drink at the bar or take home for later. If that doesn\u2019t whet your appetite, the traditionally styled Victorian corner pub Blythe Hill Tavern<\/a> has been voted the best pub and cider pub in south east London. For something a bit more avant-garde, head to “pub and community hub” Ninth Life<\/a> for live theatre, poetry, DJs and drag queen performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also plenty of family friendly activities on offer. Inflatable assault course Air Thrill<\/a>, is wildly popular with the smaller crowd, as are the nearby Crystal Palace Park Dinosaurs<\/a> complete with play area and farm. Catford itself is also no stranger to outdoor space, like the beautiful, 32 acre Mountsfield Park<\/a> \u2013 offering a range of facilities including football fields, tennis and basketball courts and a children\u2019s play area \u2013 Blythe Hill Fields<\/a>, Ladywell Fields<\/a> and the lovely Riverview Walk and River Pool Linear Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Catford is well known for its friendly residents and strong sense of community. Local get-togethers like book clubs, flower shows, quiz nights and film festivals are hugely popular and there is even a community run orchard<\/a>. Throughout the year, Catford also sees a huge range of local events and shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re a connoisseur of the arts, Catford\u2019s Broadway Theatre<\/a> hosts an impressive array of shows and events year round. These include dance, comedy shows and pantomimes. The theatre itself was built in 1932 and is a grade II listed building with a 900-seat main theatre and an 80-seat studio theatre. The impressive Catford Mews<\/a> offers a range of independent cinema and cultural events and Catford Arts was set up in 2016 to support and encourage local artists and creatives, particularly via the ever popular Arts Trail<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 02 arena<\/a> in North Greenwich is also only 4 miles from Catford and plays host to world class musicals and live performances.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and Crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Whilst there is a great sense of community in Catford, like any London suburb crime does exist. However, crime levels in the Lewisham Borough are fairly average compared to the rest of the capital and Catford is considered one of the safer areas in Lewisham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Metropolitan Police<\/a> employ safer neighbourhood teams across London and more details on specific crime in Catford and the local neighbourhood team can be found on their website<\/a>. Catford also falls under the multi-agency Safer Lewisham Partnership<\/a>.
