Whilst it may have a more urban reputation than its genteel, leafy neighbours Chiswick<\/a> and Kew to the south, Acton in West London certainly offers a lot more bang for your property buying buck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situated just over 6 miles west of Charing Cross, a settlement has existed at Acton, meaning \u201cOak Farm\u201d, since prehistoric times and it became part of the Greater London enclave and Borough of Ealing in 1965 when the area was well known for heavy industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Acton is a multicultural residential hub, attracting the great and the good away from central and south London in search of larger, more affordable housing and green space like Gunnersbury Park and Ealing Common on the doorstep. And with no less than seven railways stations and easy access to the M4 corridor and beyond, getting into and out of the capital makes Acton a commuter\u2019s dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019d be hard pressed to find better transport connections, with seven local railway stations bearing the Acton moniker:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acton Main Line (National Rail and Elizabeth Line)<\/a> \u2013 Zone 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acton Central (London Overground)<\/a> \u2013 Zone 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, there were even more before Acton Green became Chiswick Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers are currently able to reach London Paddington in around 8 minutes from Acton Main Line station and there are frequent Elizabeth line services in each direction to destinations across London, South Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. Passengers can reach Bond Street in nine minutes, Liverpool Street in 16 minutes, Canary Wharf in 23 minutes and Heathrow airport in 18 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple buses serve Acton day and night, with popular routes including the 70, 207, 266 and 607. Night owls can hop on the N7 and N207 to and from central London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To reach central London by car takes 40 minutes or so (depending on the ever-present London traffic!) via the A40 and travelling outside of London is an easy matter of picking up the nearby M4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cyclists will appreciate the numerous cycle lane options<\/a>, including a 3.5km track between Acton and Wood Lane.

Schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Almost all of Acton\u2019s primary schools are highly rated by Ofsted<\/a> so it is hardly surprising that Acton and the wider Ealing areas are popular with families. Schools like The Ark Priory Primary Academy<\/a> and Ark Byron<\/a> both operate waiting lists. At the secondary level, The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls<\/a> and Drayton Manor High School<\/a> are both popular, but the area has an impressive 34 options to choose from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acton\u2019s diverse community extends to education, with the Greek Primary School of London<\/a> and The Japanese School in London<\/a> both being located here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents of tiny tots can also find a great selection of baby and toddler classes<\/a> available in the area, which range from Gymboree and music to toddler dance classes. Acton also delivers on the nursery<\/a> front, with dozens of highly-rated options available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leisure and amenities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Acton is home to plenty of green outdoor space for those of both the two-legged and four legged variety, like Acton Park<\/a> with its sports courts, play centre, bowling green and beautiful wildflower meadow. There is even a space for community art projects. Or head to picturesque Gunnersbury Park<\/a>, home to over 185 acres of park land, the Gunnersbury Park Museum, boating lake and impressive sports facilities. For those who prefer their fitness indoors, the local leisure centre the Acton Centre<\/a> and private Hogarth Health Centre<\/a> boast an excellent range of facilities between them.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the retail fiends, Acton High Street is a bustling sight with something for everyone. You\u2019ll find a quirky selection of independent shops as well as an eclectic mix of florists, butchers, and popular caf\u00e9s along Churchfield Road. The Oaks Shopping Centre<\/a> in the heart of Acton has also undergone significant redevelopment and is home to a number of popular retail units, including that well-known middle class enclave; M&S Simply Food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dining and drinking options in Acton reflect the diverse population who have settled in the area, with Greek, Polish, Lebanese, Japanese and Antipodean options in abundance. You can also head over to the lovely Layla<\/a> for some of the best baked goods in London, or delight in some delicious pub grub and beers at The White Heart<\/a>. Or while away the evening at local haunts such as Vindinista<\/a> wine bar or the atmospheric 18th<\/sup> century George & Dragon<\/a> pub, complete with its own brewery, Dragonfly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a fun family day out, check out the Museum Depot in Acton<\/a>, a branch of the London Transport Museum that hosts most of the collection that’s not on display in Covent Garden. Perennial family favourite ten pin bowling<\/a> is available in the Royal Leisure Centre Park alongside a nine screen cinema<\/a> and popular trampoline park Oxygen Freejumping<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dating back to Medieval times, the Acton Market<\/a> which runs from Wednesdays \u2013 Saturdays in the centre of the town is well worth a visit, not least for the food! Try some of the tasty falafel, Polish baked goods or tempting Thai street food.\u00a0 Another local favourite, the Acton Carnival<\/a>, takes place every July and is a celebration of music and colour full of flamboyant costumes and characters. The wider Ealing Borough plays host to an impressive line up of summer festivals<\/a> including Greenford Carnival, CAMRA Beer Festival, Comedy Festival and Blues and Jazz Festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or hop on the tube a stop or two to explore the world-famous Kew Gardens<\/a>s<\/a>, an oasis of peace that is sure to delight plant lovers, or the Hammersmith Apollo<\/a>, a live theatre where world-class entertainers perform year-round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety & crime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the Borough of Ealing is considered one of West London\u2019s safer boroughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like any part of London, crime does exist in Acton, but the area is well policed and the North<\/a>, East<\/a> and South<\/a> Acton areas which make up the wider Acton area each have their own Safer Neighbourhood Team in place. Local initiatives like Action West London<\/a> are also in place to increase employment, education and enterprise in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
