Whilst historic Ipswich is one of the oldest towns in England, 1,000 years of maritime heritage and stunning 15th<\/sup>-century buildings are neatly juxtaposed with a slick, modern waterfront complete with marina, contemporary apartments and a buzzing university campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situated on the estuary of the River Orwell, the town boasts superb transport links, making it a desirable place to live for commuters who enjoy affordable housing, large open spaces and excellent local amenities. London can be reached in just over an hour and Norwich in around 45 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Boasting excellent transport links, Ipswich is an affordable and convenient place to live for commuters working in Norwich or London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two train stations in the town \u2013 Ipswich Station and Derby Road. Ipswich Station is on the London to Norwich train line, with a commute time of around 75 minutes to London Liverpool Street. There are also direct services to Colchester, Peterborough, Cambridge, Felixstowe and Lowestoft amongst others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drivers, meanwhile, have easy access to the A14 and the A12. Ipswich to Norwich by car takes one hour 15 minutes, whilst central London is 2.5 hours away, Cambridge an hour away and Felixstowe just 30 minutes away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ipswich has a good local bus network<\/a>, as well as regular, direct buses to London and other UK towns and cities. There is also a free shuttle bus<\/a> that runs in a loop around the town centre every 15 minutes on weekdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those travelling internationally can reach London Stansted Airport in an hour and 15 minutes, or Norwich International Airport in an hour and a half. There are also buses and National Express<\/a> coaches offering daily services to Stansted and Heathrow airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A compact town, Ipswich has everything you could need on the doorstep. For fans of retail therapy, most of the independent shops and eateries are found in The Saints<\/a> and Waterfront<\/a> areas, whilst the usual array of high street favourites can also be found in the town centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dining options<\/a> range from big-chain favourites, tasty independent restaurants and trendy waterfront eateries to cosy, traditional pubs and the town\u2019s Food Quarter<\/a>, which offers delicious street food. Highlights include the award-winning Salthouse Harbour Hotel Restaurant<\/a>, and Mariners<\/a>, a floating brasserie on a boat in Neptune Quay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fresh produce and all manner of items can be purchased at the town\u2019s popular markets. A Farmer\u2019s Market has been running for more than 700 years and sells fresh fruit and vegetables, locally grown flowers, freshly caught fish and seafood, along with artisan Suffolk chutneys and jams. Christchurch Mansion and The Wolsey Art Gallery are housed within the park, too.
