Hampshire\u2019s county town is perhaps best known as a Cathedral City and ancient capital of England<\/a>. Winchester\u2019s rich history spans more than 2,000 years, with the first settlers putting down roots around 150BC. In this time, it has been home to King Alfred the Great (c. 849-899) and was the chosen location for a Royal Palace built by William the Conqueror in the 12th<\/sup> Century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its rich history aside, the city is also perched on the edge of the South Downs National Park, making it a wonderful refuge for outdoor space. With a number of excellent restaurants, top tourist attractions, great transport links, and a bustling festival scene, Winchester brings together the vibrance of city living within a more traditional setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home to a growing population of around 116,600<\/a> residents, Winchester has long been a popular destination for homebuyers. It has even been named the best city<\/a> to live in by The Sunday Times, and more recently, one of the Telegraph\u2019s happiest British cities<\/a> to reside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Winchester is a well-connected city \u2013 just an hour from London by train \u2013 with great links to the rest of the country. Winchester train station<\/a> is the main terminal operating in the city and is a short walk from the city centre shops and amenities. The South-Western Line has direct routes into London Waterloo, Southampton, Portsmouth, Weymouth, Bournemouth and Birmingham to name a few.  As such, it is very popular with commuters looking for an escape from hectic city living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those that prefer to travel by road, National Express operates frequent coach services between the city and Oxford, London and Heathrow. There are also plenty of local buses in the area, notably the No.5 Stagecoach<\/a> Bus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By car, Winchester is located off Junctions 9,10 and 11 of the M3 and is also accessible via the A34 from Newbury and Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those visiting from afar, Southampton Airport is less than 10 miles away and for more international destinations, both Heathrow and Gatwick airport are within easy reach at 50 and 70 miles away respectively. Not far from the south coast, Winchester is also a short 25-minute drive from Southampton\u2019s cruise and ferry terminals.
