The arrival of the electric tram and two railway stations in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century saw Streatham transformed into a retail and leisure district known as the &#8220;West End of the South&#8221; (albeit rather confusingly in geographical terms!) with numerous department stores, cinemas and theatre. Located on the thoroughfare to Croydon Airport \u2013 at one time Britain\u2019s only international airport \u2013 Streatham of the early to mid-20<sup>th<\/sup> century was a sophisticated, metropolis and perhaps unsurprisingly, home to the very first Waitrose!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite a decline in the area\u2019s fortunes during the 1970s-1990s, groups like the Streatham Society worked with local councils and Transport for London to encourage a lengthy period of regeneration of the area in the early noughties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Streatham is a bustling and culturally diverse neighbourhood with an active local community and impressive Edwardian and Art Deco architecture from its heyday still very much in evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But don\u2019t just take our word for it, read on to find out more\u2026<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transport links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three railway stations serve Streatham, taking residents in and out of the capital with multiple services per hour. Streatham Railway Station, which is situated in the heart of the town, offers quick connections to both London Bridge and Luton Airport. Streatham Hill takes you to London Victoria in 17 minutes and Streatham Common has services to both London Victoria and London Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Streatham is well-served by numerous bus routes such as the busy number 50 to Croydon and 133 to Liverpool Street and whilst there is no underground station in Streatham, it is easy to pick up the Victoria Line at nearby Brixton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The A23 offers easy access for drivers wanting to reach the South Coast. Gatwick Airport is just 50 minutes away and the M25 a 40 minute journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nearest stations:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/brixton\">Brixton<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/norbury\">Norbury<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrainline.com\/stations\/west-croydon\">West Croydon<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schools<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Streatham is home to a fine selection of schools at all levels. There are 31 primary schools in Streatham, 15 of which have been rated &#8220;Outstanding&#8221; by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk\/schools-by-type?step=default&amp;table=schools&amp;parliamentary=Streatham&amp;geographic=parliamentary&amp;for=ofsted\"> Ofsted<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk\/schools-by-type?step=default&amp;table=schools&amp;parliamentary=Streatham&amp;geographic=parliamentary&amp;for=ofsted\"> OFSTED<\/a>. The town boasts several gyms as well as two tennis clubs, the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telfordparktennisclub.co.uk\/\"> Telford Park Lawn Tennis Club<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wigmoretennis.com\/\">The Wigmore Tennis Club<\/a> and an impressive<a href=\"https:\/\/www.better.org.uk\/leisure-centre\/london\/lambeth\/streatham-ice-and-leisure-centre\"> Ice and Leisure Centre<\/a> which boasts an Olympic-size ice-skating rink.
