Once seen as a charming day trip for those tearoom aficionados of a certain age, today York is a hotspot for tourists, downsizers, families and young professionals alike, artfully combining the old and new. As the UK\u2019s first \u201cGigabit City<\/a>\u201d, York is fast becoming popular with the creative industries and was recently named the \u2018Best Place to Live in Britain<\/a>\u2019 by the Times, who describe the city as a “mini-metropolis with cool cafes, destination restaurants, innovative companies – plus the fastest internet in Britain”. Handily located halfway between Edinburgh and London, York is one the UK\u2019s best-connected cities, situated around 40 minutes\u2019 drive and 30 minutes train journey from its larger northern cousin, Leeds, and less than two hours from London thanks to high speed rails. A major hub on the East Coast Main Line, York railway station<\/a> is right outside the city walls and Poppleton railway station<\/a> is just three miles north-west of York. From here you can find easy access to the North of England such as Durham and Newcastle as well as direct routes to London and Edinburgh with the Scottish capital 2.5 hours away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those wishing to travel further afield, Leeds Bradford International<\/a> airport is less than an hour away<\/a> and flies to both domestic and European destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re planning a local commute, you\u2019re in safe hands with York. Local bus services were recently rated the best in England<\/a>. On top of cutting down commute times, York\u2019s buses were praised for being convenient, on time and helping to reduce carbon emissions in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

York also has a beautiful array of parks and gardens suitable for the whole family<\/a>. Rowntree park is just a short walk from the city centre<\/a> and recently underwent a \u00a31.8million refurbishment. The park has received a Green Flag Award every year since 2004, establishing it as one of the best parks in the country.
